Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
I've made my opinion known to Dennis K. on transportation funding and a number of other issues -- he doesn't seem to listen to me though. We shouldn't all have to be full time crusaders to get our elected reps to do the right (and often obvious) thing -- I'll say it again, leadership failure at all levels (including local) is hurting us big time in NEO...

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
I agree cle2032, it's rather disgusting and disheartening... failure at the leadership level is the common underlying theme on many of the northeast Ohio threads here -- RTA crisis, Convention Center/Med Mart, etc. etc.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
Yes, re-use of the old center should be part of the equation but of course it won't. Instead FCE or Jacobs will by the old site for a few mil (using a brownfield loan from the county) and then after leaving it undeveloped for a decade or so, will sell it back to the county for 10x what they originally paid. Just another prediction, could be off by a million here or there but who really cares :-D :-D :-D

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
When true leadership is needed, such as is called for with this RTA budget crisis, out come the likes Kucinich and Polensek to thoroughly disappoint as usual... They make me physically ill.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
Guess we'll have to read the actual report to determine how they came to the "air travelers think it's slow and costly" conclusion. Maybe they read it in the PD. The costly part makes no sense vs. taxi or rental car (for those with business in the CBD/UC) and the slow, well maybe slow compared to having someone waiting for you at arrivals with their car idling but its comparable to any other option if heading downtown or points beyond.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
^ It would be ideal if increased state funding for transit was tied to consolidation of agencies in each metro area -- make it an offer that the agencies can't refuse to get over any concerns that would exist in the outlying counties about being swallowed up by the bigger GCRTA.

Cleveland: Filling in Euclid Avenue
^does the Gap still sell khaki trousers? I guess we'll find out when one opens on Euclid next to the Cadillac Ranch :-D

Cleveland: Random Development and News
Anyone know what's going in the corner retail space (E. 12th and Superior) of Reserve Square? This would be right next to Scorchers, looks like some sort of food establishment.

Where is the best place to get pizza?
^Main thing with the Briar Hill pizza, there's no melted shredded cheese layer but grated Romano cheese instead. The crust is really good, not too thin, not too thick and a bit crispy around the edges with plenty of olive oil. It's a different taste anyway, again a taste that I associate with a homemade recipe in my family. It may not float everyone's boat but I would recommend trying it sometime if you get a chance. I pick some up about once a year if I'm lucky...

Where is the best place to get pizza?
Briar Hill Pizza in Youngstown -- only pizza I've ever had that is close to my Italian grandmother's homemade...

Cuyahoga County: Corruption Probe
Why would he pay the price? Do you think all the voters will take it out on him alone? He's the only commish with some damn sense! Just my prediction, but yes, I think voters will take it out on PLJ in November. Doesn't matter his record, with all the corruption voters will be in the mood to clean house. Happens all the time.

Cuyahoga County: Corruption Probe
Peter Lawson Jones can't be a happy camper today. This doesn't seem to touch him (so far) but he'll most likely pay the price in November.

Lake Erie/Cleveland Area Beaches
That's Huntington in Bay Village. BTW, if you don't mind travelling 45 minutes west of Cleveland, Nickleplate beach in Huron is nice. It's usually not crowded and doesn't seem to have many water quality issues. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=nickelplate+beach+huron,+oh&ie=UTF8&ll=41.395323,-82.539682&spn=0.007694,0.013218&t=h&z=16

ODOT Policy Discussion
Great that they have "60 Ohio leaders and transportation experts" working on this report but I can solve their problem (budget shortfall anyway) with three bullet points: stop expanding the system -- a moratorium on new concrete/asphalt tolls to cover cost of maintenance for existing system 100% of federal gas tax returned to Ohio with new money earmarked to transit

Help me buy a bike...
^ A narrow road bike tire is usually pretty hire pressure -- I think the narrower the tire the higher the pressure. I had a similar thing happen after my road bike had been hanging up for a while the tire pressure was really low. I filled with my pump and didn't make it a mile before I had a flat. Turns out the tub had got pinched when I inflated the tire.

Walkable Communities
No hard feelings peabody99 :-) I don't think it's that hard to fathom though. Most older suburbs (street car) or those that we developed largely pre-WWII/interstate highway expansion are going to score well on walkabilty and why shouldn't they? Believe me, I absolutely love many Cleveland neighborhoods OC, Tremont and of course Shaker Square and hope to someday move my family back to the city proper. However, from an overall amenities standpoint, you have to admit that some city neighborhoods may not be as well rounded (yet) as some of the inner-ring burbs. By this I mean the whole package literally within a few blocks of your door -- groceries, schools, library (my kids have an insane number of books and DVDs shipped from all over the county to our branch), recreation, a bank, pharmacy, drycleaner and other neighborhood convenience businesses, bars, places to grab a coffee or a quick sandwhich. The site admits that their methodology has gaps and transit is a big one as KJP pointed out. Of course generally neighborhoods that score well on this site would tend to be relatively dense and would therefore be well served by public transit assuming the area has a decent system, which we do in Cuyahoga County.

Walkable Communities
^so what was your "low" score?
-
Walkable Communities
^Yes this walkscore website is not perfect, it even missed a few of the local establishments around my home. But peabody99, why no love for Fairview Park? It's a largely walkable inner-ring burb, especially the older sections. From my home here's what is within a 2-4 city block radius (all via sidewalks :-)) from my 1920's built home: Public High School Public Middle School Two K-8 private schools Track/turf football & soccer field Couple of baseball diamonds RTA stop at the end of my street (75 to downtown/22 to West Park rapid) New Rec. Center Bain Park/Cabin/Playground Regional branch of the Cuyahoga County Library Several neighborhood watering holes New independent coffee shop (Russo's) Great sandwich shop (Presto's) Giant Eagle Dunkin Doughnuts (I like their coffee) Drycleaner Several medical\dental offices A bunch of other small businesses\independent retailers along Lorain that I'm leaving off the list... Every suburb is not an evil souless void. I'm sure you don't like people making generalizations about Cleveland proper. I know I don't.

Walkable Communities
Now we can drill down a bit on this topic: Walkscore for my home address in Fairview Park is 71/100 and 85/100 for my Downtown Cleveland office on Superior. Visit www.walkscore.com, found out about this in the PD article here: http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2008/07/web_site_rates_walkability_of.html

Gas Prices
I do IT consulting for some clients in the transportation sector -- whether it's a "right" or not, these independents/mom & pop carriers are indeed dropping like flies. Each individual is just a small cog but the collective reliance on these guys to move the massive amount of freight/food/imports in this country is real and there will be much pain, and increased prices for everything before it all shakes out. There are already cases today where manufacturers and the large retail entities that drive much of the transportation sector are having difficulty finding carriers to take their shipments at any price.
