A pool hall probably isn't viable due to the smoking ban. Several have closed since the ban (out in the suburbs at least) and I haven't seen any new ones open up.

Shame the UDF on Hartshorn isn't there any more. So glad it's been replaced by nothing.

That's interesting. Before Mediterranean House opened (that was the official name) the place was called Jerusalem Cafe. Never ate at Jerusalem Cafe but I think the food was similar to Mediterranean House. For those that were never there, Mediterranean House was a very cute little restaurant (probably about a dozen tables) that specialized in an all-the-time buffet. Very, very tasty and also included as much jasmin tea and turkish coffee as you want. The owner (and main employee, it seemed) was also very nice.

Cincinnati: Corryville: Hampton Inn & Suites
^^^^^ An IHOP in the area would be cool. We already have a Starbucks. I know Starbucks likes to build locations 2 blocks from each other but it seems kind of unnecessary. Oh boy, a bank! Additionally, there is already the Kingsgate Marriott which is never even close to full. Who needs another 138 hotel rooms?

While I am interested in what they have planned, I don't quite understand it. What do they mean by "reconnect Short Vine to Vine"? Vine St doesn't really stop...it becomes Jefferson for a short while. To connect Vine St and Short Vine at the Southern end, you would have to demolish University Plaza. The road would go right through there, unless some major realignment is involved.

warsaw303 replied to The_Cincinnati_Kid's post in a topic in Restaurants, Local Events, & EntertainmentFALSE, Potbelly sucks. Both Jersey Mike's and Jimmy John's are better by miles. Potbelly is SLIGHTLY better than Subway. Oh, and FALSE....LaRosa's Montgomery Inn Topper is quite good. You're 0/2.

that place is PACKED every day since it has been opened. they basically have the monopoly on wing bars in clifton, there is none other that I know of. There used to be a great wing place right across the street from BW-3's on Calhoun. It was called Big Red's Sports Cafe. MUCH better wings than B-Dubs. It got torn down to make way for the nothing that currently sits there.

Cincinnati: Random Development and News
Ugh, this "condo" trend is really starting to get to me. $155,000 for a one-bedroom apartment?? Not to mention you'll likely pay condo fees on top of your mortgage! Why do people buy into this? I understand the developer's love of it. Sell a 1 bedroom that might go for $700/month for $155,000 and make your condo fees on top of it. I don't understand why buyer's buy into this. Unless you're going to live there for at least 8-10 years, you're probably better off renting.

CINCINNATI - Clifton Heights, featuring Fairview!
Uggh R-Club; but that was "urine" alley..always good to let it out before getting in line for Taco Hell Whats the name of the bar on the corner of McMillan and W. Clifton? Is it still there?...It was L shaped and tucked behine a building...there was a door on both McMillan and W. Clifton I think you're referring to Ripley's Alive. That hasn't been open in 6 years or more. On the McMillan entrance is where Red Pepper and something else is and on the W. Clifton entrance is where they put the Chipotle.

Good to see more businesses coming into that strip on Calhoun St. I hope it's completely full soon. However, I've still heard no news in months about the strip between Calhoun and McMillan. Hardee's and Arby's still sit and nothing is happening. I think it's a shame that this isn't covered more often. A huge deal to tear down all sorts of businesses and property and then the money runs out and nothing happens? Pro Tip: Behind the new Arby's there are a few parking spots for the McMillan Park leasing office. Feel free to park there for a short while...it's not as if anyone is ever in the leasing office.

Not the UDF closer to Ludlow, that's still there. The UDF on Hartshorn, right across from Inn The Wood. It was one of the first things to go, but perhaps it closed on its own? Not sure, they seemed to do great business.

I read this news story yesterday and as a resident of the area was most interested. So what does mean now? Unfortunately, it looks like if Acropolis Chili and Inn The Wood had continued the fight they would still be open. I miss both businesses. What's going on up there, though? Hardee's has been closed for 5 years or so and there is already another Arby's. Why are these really shitty looking buildings still sitting there? Is this whole project dead in the water? If that is the case, this area lost a good bar, a UDF, and several restaurants for nothing.

Colerain Township: Northgate Mall Development and News
Another "gateway to the community"? Something should be put in on the corner of Springdale and Colerain there but I think a clock tower is a pretty stupid idea. Another worthless thing to spend money on. I thought the huge people bridge crossing Colerain (connecting Northgate parking lot...and, uh...Blockbuster and a couple other businesses with their own parking lot) was supposed to be the "gateway". BTW, I hardly ever see anyone on that bridge. I actually used it once myself to cross from Gamestop to Northgate Mall and I couldn't help but thinking what a waste of time it was. I should have just drove across the street.

Ohio Smoking Ban
I've heard this statement many times now. Why would you vote for something if you didn't know what you were voting for??? The text of the issue was available to read for a while before election day and the language was on the ballot. Do people not even bother to read? It's disturbing.

Cincinnati and the smoking ban
Here is what I'm confused about at this point: So, no smoking after midnight tonight. However, no provisions will be in place for up to six months or more to actually punish anyone. So is the enforcement at this stage just expecting everyone to just say "OK, I won't smoke in here anymore." What's to stop an obstinate bar owner from saying "Screw you guys, you have no methods in place for punishing me at this point, so my bar will still be a smoking establishment." Could anything actually be done about that?

Ohio Smoking Ban
Let's see what some more scientists have to say, shall we? "..not only might there be no link between passive smoking and lung cancer, but that it could even have a protective effect." World Health Organization, March 1998 "The results are consistent with there being no additional risk for a person living or working with a smoker and could be consistent with passive smoke having a protective effect against lung cancer.." London Telegraph, 1999 "In general, there was no elevated lung cancer risk associated with passive smoke exposure in the workplace. ..." - Brownson et. al. American Journal of Public Health, November 1992, Vol. 82, No. 11 "... no evidence of an adverse effect of environmental tobacco smoke in the workplace." - Janerich et al. New England Journal of Medicine, Sept. 6, 1990 "... the association with exposure to passive smoking at work was small and not statistically significant." - Kalandidi et al. Cancer Causes and Control, 1, 15-21, 1990 "We did not generally find an increase in CHD [coronary heart disease] risk associated with ETS [environmental smoke] exposure at work or in other settings." Steenland et al. Circulation, Vol. 94, No. 4, August 15, 1996 "... no statistically significant increase in risk associated with exposure to environmental tobacco smoke at work or during social activities...." - Stockwell et al. Journal of the National Cancer Institute, 84:1417-1422, 1992 "There was no association between exposure to ETS at the workplace and risk of lung cancer." Zaridze et al., 1998 International Journal of Cancer, 1998, 75, 335-338

Ohio Smoking Ban
Sure, I'll add one more thing. There is no statistically significant link between second-hand smoke and lung cancer. Most of the info people like to quote on this comes from a single 1992 study done by the American Cancer Society which has been widely debunked since then. In fact, in 1998 the WHO released a report stating this very thing.

Ohio Smoking Ban
Does your family have asthma or something that would prevent you from "breathing easy"? Bummer. Hilarious. Absolutely hilarious. from http://www.epa.gov/smokefree/ Secondhand Smoke Can Make Children Suffer Serious Health Risks Breathing secondhand smoke can be harmful to children's health including asthma, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), bronchitis and pneumonia and ear infections. Children's exposure to secondhand smoke is responsible for: increases in the number of asthma attacks and severity of symptoms in 200,000 to 1 million children with asthma; between 150,000 and 300,000 lower respiratory tract infections (for children under 18 months of age); and, respiratory tract infections resulting in 7,500 to 15,000 hospitalizations each year. The developing lungs of young children are severely affected by exposure to secondhand smoke for several reasons including that children are still developing physically, have higher breathing rates than adults, and have little control over their indoor environments. Children receiving high doses of secondhand smoke, such as those with smoking mothers, run the greatest risk of damaging health effects. I'm not trying to be insensitive, especially against those with asthma. But, given your post from the EPA, do we have any information about the damage done to children (now our parents and grandparents) when people smoked just about anywhere they wanted to (early 1900's to around early to mid 80's)? Or is second-hand smoke somehow, uh, more damaging now?

I live in the area. When they started tearing down some of my favorite businesses (Acropolis, Inn the Wood, UDF) I secretly hoped the project would fail. I now regret thinking that. Someone mentioned it earlier in the thread but I would like to know why Arby's and Hardee's still stands. The empty lots are eyesores, but boarded-up graffiti covered buildings are even worse. Hardee's confuses me even more. They shut down before I even heard mention of other businesses closing. I honestly can't remember the last time Hardee's was open whereas Arby's etc was just a few years ago.
