Cleveland: Downtown: Medical Mutual HQ Renovation
It is sooo encouraging to see the new generation of investors stepping up in Cleveland. We wish them success! A legacy project, Patel told Scene on a recent tour, that could help re-energize, along with nearby retail, the front door of Downtown’s Gateway District. A high-end restaurant concept is in the brainstorming process, Patel said, by Arrival, the marketing firm behind Red Bull’s “gives you wiiiings” slogan. And a quarter of the ground floor will be dedicated to a lengthy, horizontal bar, which will include sidewalk seating during the warm months. “Whatever we end up putting there—it’s really gonna reactivate that whole block,” Joe Berardi, the project's head architect, said. “I remember one of our first meetings in that cafeteria. I was like, ‘Guys, this is the perfect spot for a bar or restaurant. And they’re like, ‘Yeah, that’s exactly it.’” https://www.clevescene.com/news/rose-building-to-rekindle-front-door-of-cleveland-identity-with-boutique-marriott-hotel-45819511

So many possibilities - let's hope they do something dramatic or subtle as these NYC and Dallas examples

Yes the doors are a nice touch. I was surprised how the narrow portion that doglegs toward Cedar seems so close to the the sidewalk and busy street.

Canal Basin Park and Lake Link Trail
Very thorough news story. The only flag is where is Metroparks involvement to better ensure it gets done sooner? It will take years to fully realize the vision for more than 20 acres stretching from the Center Street Swing Bridge to Old River Road in the Flats. The entire project could cost $30 million to $40 million and require significant funding from federal and state governments. But you’ll start to see smaller – and much less expensive – changes to the site in the spring, from murals brightening up blank bridge pilings to events designed to bring people down to the water.

Sounds like Nippon's China operations and future plans there were the only big sticking point. https://www.reuters.com/markets/commodities/japans-nippon-steel-china-assets-under-scrutiny-over-us-steel-deal-bloomberg-2024-02-22/

Sounds like it is being staged for the new development underway per other contributors but this book store may be there: https://clevelandmagazine.com/entertainment/books/articles/browsing-room-bookstore-and-cafe-opens-in-downtown-cleveland Otherwise maybe just the Parker Hannifin Downtown YMCA?

Memory is bad whether Tower Records every opened or was just part of the drama with the Rock Hall. Record Town rings a bell as being there for a while.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
Interesting that Deion denied he publicly said Shedur would not go to Cleveland: https://www.sportingnews.com/us/ncaa-football/news/deion-sanders-browns-titans-draft-rumors-shedeur/a955e4728c6e8b531245764f but then muddied the water: When asked if Deion would step in to avoid Sanders going into a bad situation, the Colorado head coach said: “Yeah, but I’m not going to do it publicly. I’m going to do it privately.” It will be interesting to see if Deion ‘privately’ steps in to stop his son going to either the Titans or Browns. https://www.themirror.com/sport/american-football/nfl-draft-sanders-hunter-titans-892050

Affordable Housing
In most large high-density metro areas we have seen there is a Costco within easy reach with many having adjacent garages (they even have 4-5 stores in the hihg-density San Juan metro area). While they purposely have lower profit margins they count on very high-volume, loyalty and strong employee benefits to differentiate from the others. Developers finally luring Costco to their mixed use developements makes sense as traditional grocery stores are already part of mixed-use developments nationwide. Costco is actually late to the game but briliantly market their efforts as a win-win - more business volume and positve PR by being partners in the affordable housing discussion.

to add to the free focus group above...Hopefully that is not the real sign but a computer image that can be amended before fabrication (unless is a franchise). While we get the chocolate angle the use of the color brown does not seem to convey as intended.

Cleveland: Downtown: Tower at Erieview & Galleria Renovation
It Jacobs Bros. vs Forest City then. d**k Jacobs got his opened about 4-5 years before Tower City ever opened. Once Tower City lost the Rock Hall the entire Riverfornt phase 2 died and the phase 1 high-end retailers used that to break/not renew their leases one by one (reports alleged the Rock Hall had a hissy fit over the Tower Records store (remember those) that Forest City placed across the street from the museum site. Only in Cleveland.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
Owner(s) yes but don't forget to include Dee as she reminds all. This 2019 ESPN inside the Browns expose is interesting to say the least. No wonder it has been hard to recruit some coaches and players. It seems the current coach and front office are safe as long as they are not confrontational and do not contribute to the chaos as many in the 2019 story. We hope things are better today for the sake of players and fans. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/25797430/inside-cleveland-browns-front-office-where-hope-history-collide Fascinating soap opera read for Browns fans over all like this (if true): "We just don't know what we are doing," Dee said in the office around that time, according to multiple sources in the building, a refrain they had heard her utter before but that she denied through a team spokesman. "If we'd known how hard it would be, we never would have bought the team."

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport
I think the idea linked below about of a regional increase in the sale tax presents probably the best strategy to lock in and stabilize our city/regional assets (sports/arts/airport/other transit/social services) as we try to reinvent Cleveland and NEO for the future - if we are to survive against the competition (and not plummet from 2nd tier to 3rd tier). With Columbus just increasing their total sale tax to 8% (increase for transit) to equal Cuyahoga County's 8% - it may be time for us to lead again and increase ours another .25 or maybe .50 (if we add social safety net investments). What's not to like. NOACA and the Greater Cleveland Partnership can hopefully step up out of the shadows and lead: https://www.cleveland.com/news/2025/01/put-up-or-shut-up-northeast-ohio-if-we-want-a-great-airport-and-sports-stadiums-lets-take-another-look-at-this-bold-idea.html ent

Would love some pics from its heyday after opening in 87 and also Tower City when it opened a few years later. Was an incredibly hopeful period for Cleveland.

Canal Basin Park and Lake Link Trail
Luckily is not a Sophie's Choice and we can like all three 😀 Hopefully Governor DeWine was made aware of funding $ needs for all three parks (not just the Lakefront/Burke and Gilbert-Bedrock) during his recent Listening Tour on behalf of his pending decision expected in support of the iinept Browns ownership. If that occurs I hope our local leadersare ready to barter/squeeze the Governor bigly for rare State to Cleveland dollars for all of our critical riverfront and lakefront needs. In this scenario State $ would catapult our current slow incremental approach to each of these public works into radical hyper-change mode.

Canal Basin Park and Lake Link Trail
Lillian Kuri made the point that while Canal Basin is a great recreational hub and catalyst she asked for slides showing in red the gaps to a continuous 1.5 mile or so boardwalk so the Planning Commission and other City leaders are held to account until accomplished.

We find it interesting that Dale Miller - a an elected politician of 45 years - has no public statement either way on this. Did it come up during his re-election in November? We can't find it anywhere. Let's hope he surprises us in a good way when his position is finally made public. No hurry Dale (or for media to ask)...

It would make it easier for the rest of us outsiders if they would just merge Avon and Avon Lake (do Cleveland and East Cleveland while at it). Fixed it.

Cleveland: Downtown: Huntington Bank Field
Didn't think about Gilbert as an option if he is interested. We wish the Haslams cared even a fraction as much about Cleveland as Gilbert does Detroit. We are very lucky to get Gilbert's interest in Cleveland on a very small part-time basis considering what he has done and what he has planned for Detroit's future. Imagine the Haslams speaking as passionately about Cleveland (and acting on it) as Gilbert does with his obvious love of all things Detroit in his recent appearance at the Detroit Economic Club (starts around 8:00 minutes): https://www.facebook.com/onedetroit/videos/a-conversation-with-dan-gilbert-detroit-economic-club/1031010052017452/

Plain Dealer has a rare intertesting updated read: Put up or shut up Northeast Ohio: If we want a great airport and sports stadiums, let’s take another look at this bold idea We like the regional approach - may be late in the game but should be included in the current discussions and DeWines apparently still in progress listening tour.

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
only concerning Michigan 🤣 Maybe Ryan Day should coach from the box (just for the Michigan game) as Cooper did for a non-Michigan game back in the day just after back surgery. We remember he called the best game of his career only to return to the field sidelines the next week and the same old results.

Even more workers per this story: For the past several decades, Mentor’s traditional business environment has evolved, incorporating biomedical, aerospace and polymer clusters to our already robust advanced manufacturing base.
