Cleveland: Maingate Market Place
I agree, that's my whole point. You're the one that tried to connect the two.

Cleveland: Maingate Market Place
The point was that old buildings remained, were able to be rehabbed, and a dense environment was built around them. At E. 55th and Woodland, we don't have ANY historic buildings remaining, what's there is suburban-style junk, and this new proposal looks like suburban-style junk. I don't see any comparison between Harlem and Maingate. Regardless, my argument isn't that this shouldn't be built if its not going to be a beautiful urban structure that returns the intersection to its glory days. My point is that I don't see how this is any different from numerous other suburban-style strip plazas built across the city. We are littering our city with junk which doesn't turn out to be very useful anyway.

I randomly street viewed two locations on Frederick Douglass Blvd. (one around 116th and one around 119th). I saw some crap (albeit densely built crap) and some nice newer buildings and some nice older buildings) in both locations. Neither intersection looked like it was ever anything close to the current state of E. 55th and Woodland. And of course it also helps that you're only one block away from the beautiful and fully intact 7th Avenue. I honestly don't know how you could compare this to Maingate. General Roads & Highway Discussion (History, etc)
The idea is that if everything were urban, it would be closer together and scale well. That job that is 20 miles away now, thanks to all the suburban strip malls, wide highways, and huge parking lots you have to drive past, could be only a couple miles away with good public transit connecting you to it. Sure, people wouldn't be as physically mobile, but that's because they wouldn't have to be. They'd still have access to just as many amenities and jobs, just that they'd all be closer. We have built a society where people are mobile just because they have to be to get to the same amount of things, and it's a huge waste of energy.

General Roads & Highway Discussion (History, etc)
The 5 MPH reference was on urban residential side streets. Nobody thinks rural county roads or arterial highways should be 5 MPH. I think 5 MPH is a little slow, but I do think roads in residential areas should be built only to handle the speeds desired on them (a 25 MPH road shouldn't feel safe to go 50 MPH on).

MTS mentioned Harlem as an example. Harlem has never had its building stock depleted like the area around E. 55th and Woodland. Also, I don't think too many rejuvenation efforts in Harlem took the form of a suburban strip plaza on a main intersection. And anyone that thinks a neighborhood catalyst can be created like the West Side Market by building a strip plaza need only look at the East Side Market, which I think was better planned than this and still failed. Based on the site plan I saw, this will be nothing like Findlay Market or the West Side Market. Personally, I would like to see this project happen and hope it succeeds, but I'm just weary about being overly optimistic after seeing how many similar projects have failed, and also wish it was designed to be something other than a typical strip plaza.

Cleveland: Maingate Market Place
What makes you think that? I can see that there's a possibility, but I think there's a higher likelihood that this development falls flat on its face. One of the few comments I have ever seen on cleveland.com that brought up a good point mentioned that the East Side Market on the northeast corner of E. 105th and St. Clair, which would seemingly be a better location than this one for a market, is pretty much vacant. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&q=St+Clair+Ave+%26+E+105th+St,+Cleveland,+Cuyahoga,+Ohio+44108&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=49.444078,114.169922&ie=UTF8&cd=1&geocode=FcLUeQIdTqUi-w&split=0&hq=&hnear=St+Clair+Ave+%26+E+105th+St,+Cleveland,+Cuyahoga,+Ohio+44108&z=16&layer=c&cbll=41.539158,-81.614672&panoid=UVthTtVXyrSQnJJbfs6lZA&cbp=12,348.81,,0,4.24 EDIT: I see that buckeye1 already photographed it and MTS commented that it's the "red-headed stepchild of the Central Market".

Paysage? Duo Home? Banyan Tree (second time I've guessed that :) )?

He never said it made them insignificant. He's just pointing out that if the fact is that people aren't shopping at fresh fruit stands put right in their buildings, it may not be a good business decision to put such a store there if you want it to be supported by the local population. It's not placing a judgment on the residents, but rather on the business based on the residents' buying patterns. Now there are other factors which should be taken into account, such as are the people not supporting those markets because the quality is bad or they're not advertised well, or is it that they literally would rather just eat fast food? I'm not saying he's right or wrong about their buying patterns, but it's surely worth investigating and isn't a judgement on the people themselves. If you were going to build a Barney's, you would probably look at the shopping patterns of the nearby residents first to know whether they were going to patronize your store. If they will, great, if not, that's fine too, you just don't build it. It doesn't mean you think they're insignificant people.

Cleveland: Random Quick Questions
Have you ever seen (or heard) a street sweeper at 3 am? I have only seen them during the day. I suppose that doesn't mean they don't sweep at night. Plowing could be covered by Emergency Snow Streets and tickets for such. I think it's a blight issue, but I also think that's stupid. For the small amount of blight it may save, it sure inconveniences a lot of people.

Hts121, it's pretty much a rule in suburbs throughout the country. I think the rationale is that there are less cars parked on the street when overnight parking is not allowed, and that less cars parked on the street is "a good thing" for some reason to most suburbanites. Keep in mind that many of these laws go back to the days when the inner rings were considered outer suburbs, and once these laws are in place and generating revenue for a city, it's very hard to get them off the books. I personally think the overnight parking bans are garbage and would like to see them abolished, but I doubt that will happen any time soon.

Also retired is #46 - Don Fleming. The Browns have a total of 5 numbers retired. Yes, shs96, NFL teams do retire numbers in the sense that no player can wear that number again for that team.

Cleveland is getting HSPA+ on Wednesday (July 21) the last I saw (which was about a week ago). I have Verizon, though, so it won't help me. My DSL at home sucks. I rarely exceed 2 Mbps and my upload speed is ~384 kbps. I need to be able to connect to my home PC often when I'm away from home, though, so dropping DSL won't work for me.

Somehow I don't see WRL getting involved in the design of a marc's. Ha, true. I was thinking a lot of the "something that would benefit downtown" comment. DISCLAIMER: I hate Marc's. As much as a Malley's would be great (if it served ice cream), I would definitely put my money on something like Arhaus Furniture over Malley's. Are there any local upscale clothing stores or boutiques that would be possibilities? Maybe a second Banyan Tree?
-
Cleveland: Downtown: East 4th Street Developments
That's probably a good guess. I never thought of that. Yeah, Malley's a retail business which all Clevelander's have heard of. Are you saying it is not? I think he just got the irresistible urge to use the BIG RED FONT. Don't read too much into it.

Cleveland: Cleveland State University News & Info
How can you say that with any certainty? I applied to three schools: University of Toledo, Ohio State University, and CWRU. My brother's wife went to UT. A good friend growing up went to UT. All were from NEO. I actually know more people that went to or considered UT than KSU.

iPhone
1748 kbps down/809 kbps up I think that this belongs here moreso than the smartphones thread as the speeds are related to the carriers, not the specific phones, and the discussion is pertinent due to the fact that the iPhone ties you to a specific carrier. Also, Cincinnatus, I am in Cleveland but I do not have the Droid X. I have the original Motorola Droid.

That's good. You must be right-handed. When cars are recalled for being defective (such as Toyotas), often times it's not a very large percentage that actually sees the defect. Once again, I have an iPod Touch and I like it. Apple makes some nice devices, I'm not trying to discount that. But I like my Android phone better. I'm sure everyone's mileage may vary. What I'm tired of is Apple or users of its products passing off features which can be found on MANY other phones as "revolutionary". My Droid also dims the screen (and disables touch response) via a proximity sensor when I hold it to my ear during a call. In addition, it has an ambient light sensor so that I can turn my screen brightness to Auto and it will automatically crank the brightness up in sunlight and dim itself in low light to save battery (and eye strain).
