The traffic through the Innerbelt just isn't heavy enough to justify 10 lanes. At the current 6 lanes, it still doesn't seem to ever cost people more than 5 or 10 minutes, even at the peak of rush hour. Talk about overbuilding just so noone ever has to slow down.
  2. Also don't forget, though, that both the property taxes and mortgage interest are tax deductible.
  3. Exactly...the seller is quite possibly testing the market to make sure he gets the maximum price out of the property. I would expect (or at least hope) Maron ends up as the buyer.
  4. I'd say he has an impressive resume. Check out the info box on the right of this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macromedia Headquarters San Francisco, California (incorporated in Delaware) United States Key people Michael Nielsen, Co-Founder Marc Canter, Founder
  5. Any chance Ari Maron could gobble it up? :)
  6. Isn't the Terminal Tower Observation Deck opened up a few days (Saturdays I thought) per year? I thought I remembered going up there a few years ago and taking some pictures.
  7. Late into the discussion, but first of all, the regular fare from Philly to DC is $44 each way, and there are nearly always specials for Northeast Corridor trains booked 14 days in advance (currently 25% off). Even without any specials and assuming all passengers were adults, your fares should have been no more than $88 each round trip, which for a family of four would not be cheap. However, I would be willing to bet that most family trips include some or all of the children being 15 or less. Children 2-15 ride for half off (and 2 and under free) anywhere in the country on Amtrak, which everyone here seems to be ignoring. So, say that family trip to DC included you and 3 nephews ranging in age from 12 to 17. I went to amtrak.com and checked a reservation for 2 adults and 2 children from Philly to DC later this month. Not only did I have my choice of 7 different times, and each trip was around 1 hour and 55 minutes in length, the TOTAL fare was $198 round trip ($66 per adult, and $33 per child). Now, driving would not only cost you the $100 in gas and take you 2 hours and 38 minutes (per Google Maps) each way in PERFECT TRAFFIC (not very likely), but you would then have to pay to park everywhere you decide to go in DC. If you want to limit yourself to only going to the baseball game, you'll probably be shelling out at least another $20 for parking. Stay overnight and you'll likely pay even more for parking unless you find a Motel 8 in the burbs. All of a sudden, the extra $70 or so for the train ride doesn't look so bad to the family of four for the convenience it provides (a lot more quality family time, less stress, and a faster travel time). This is not to say it is for everyone, but the prices often times sure aren't deal breakers for families when childen ride for half price. It is not impossible, but it surely is tough. Don't you think the large population of this country which cannot or (wishes not to) drive deserves to at least have viable options other than driving everywhere? This is why people want rail, whether or not EVERYBODY will use it (just like not neverybody drives, yet everyone helps pay for it). Also, DanB, one argument you make about fixed costs being sunk costs may not be relevant for others. I know families in the suburbs that own 4 or 5 cars. If trains could replace trips to other major cities, especially for work travel, it may be feasible for some families to dump 1 or even 2 cars sometimes, and surely would cut down on how often they need to replace them. You need to look at the big picutre of building a rail network and people using them as an alternative. Over the long run, there may be "fixed cost" savings if enough trips by car are replaced by rail trips and the car lasts twice as long.
  8. There's nothing wrong with that, but please quote or make a reference to it since there was another discussion or two in between. I was kind of lost when I first read your comment.

I would hope they have plans to extend the Blue Line before they spend the money to get it through the intersection. Otherwise it is a mammoth waste of money, as I would think that would have to be about 80% of the cost of extending it for a few more miles.

Is this a study about extending the Blue Line or simply reworking the station and development around the station?
  12. I would think an East Shore commuter line would attract more riders than a West Shore one. There is quite a fair amount of density surrounding the rail lines pretty much all the way from downtown to Painesville.

Are they really moving along on this fast enough for this to happen?
  14. I had just closed Google Maps after doing Street View on it, haha. 15. What restaurant used to be west of Winking Lizard? Isn't that where Forti's is (what used to be Boneyard)?
  16. Some go downtown and some don't. During the morning rush hour, all 32X busses go downtown except for 2. I know that is probably confusing, but it is how the flow works out so that the busses will be heading back in all the way to downtown every 15 minutes between 8 am and 9 am. That is why it is important to see on the schedule exactly which bus it is you're getting on, or at least checking the front of the bus for the destination when boarding. It's unfortunately not as simple as "all busses go downtown between 6:30 am and 9 am".
  17. We do also need to try to attract people from other parts of the country (especially those who moved away). I personally know a handful of people who moved to the Sunbelt, and most eventually came back. Those who haven't come back hope to some day. I don't think this Sunbelt migration pattern is permanent. I feel it is just a passing trend and we need to push to reverse it (and make sure those coming back come back to Cleveland).
  18. No, Cuyahoga county is between 1.3 and 1.4 million. The MSA (5 counties) is 2.1 million, and the CSA (8 counties) is 2.9 million. The "7 county metro area" is just about 2.8 million, because the 8th county in the CSA is Ashtabula County, which doesn't add much population (around 100,000).
  19. Read the article just before I left for work. Wow, did that put me in a bad mood. It seems 90% of people are rooting for grand, old cities to fail: those that move to the suburbs, those that move to the Sunbelt, and those that like to bask in the glory of having bad news to write about and exaggerate for dramatic effect (mostly PD reporters).

Probably a site that is blocked. That's how 99% of this thread shows up for me at work.
  23. Pepe is Valerio's brother-in-law and used to cook the pizzas at La Gelateria. Do you know who cooks there now?
  24. Yes, but on your bike it's a 2 minute ride (KJP must ride 40 mph to make it in 1 min! :) ).
  25. Good job Title IX. If women want equal treatment in sports as men, then they should have to compete against them. The reason womens sports can't bring is as much as the mens is the same reason a D3 basketball game doesn't bring in as much as an NBA game. People don't clamor for 7th graders getting equal spending on their basketball games as UNC games.
