The small town stops (with no baggage service) really don't add much time to the trip do they? On the train to Chicago, stops like Bryan and Waterloo are probably less than a minute, and the Amtrak trains speed up and slow down fairly rapidly. I can't imagine an extra stop adding more than about 3-5 minutes to the overall ride length.

The Amtrak station is in about as inconvenient a location as possible for pedestrain access. At least the Waterfront Line will stop if you flag them down, but this is really only useful for the Lakeshore Limited westbound train, and even then you have to sit an hour before the first Waterfront train (just did it this morning).

Oh, don't get me wrong. I think schools like this are a great amenity and can only do good for the area. I just think sometimes people get to thinking that they are the solution to our country's educational problems. They serve a wealthy minority of the population (or high level of intelligence if scholarhsips are offered), most of whom would succeed in whatever school they attended.

The Victoria Transport Policy Institute has done some interesting research in comparing the amount of highways within urban centers in U.S. cities vs. international cities. American cities have more highways in them and thus have more parking areas, more drive-throughs, more abandonment and greater depopulation than their international counterparts, they found. That's where he's ultimately flawed. The purpose of a company isn't to provide jobs and benefits.. it's to provide a service or good. The jobs are a bonus that comes with that mission. If a business is structured and run this way (always focusing on the consumer) it will be successful. Think Wal-Mart. If it is run with the focus on the employee, it won't be. Think GM... A $2 tax on gas to help Government Motors build cars while continuing to overpay their workers is one of the most ridiculous solution you could try to apply. It's not even socialism-lite at that point.. I took it to mean what you are at first, and I agree with what you said. But I think he's saying to use $30 million to help keep (and probably retrain) their current emplyees while they transition away from cars to building trains. I know he can be out there sometimes, but I would hope he's smart enough to realize it wouldn't be sustainable to just give the employees $30 million in welfare with no long-term plan for the viability of the company.

Michael Moore's suggestions for GM

I had originally referred the OP to this forum from city-data.com. There he stated that he is looking at a house near Scranton and Starkweather (close to the Tremont Tap House). Another poster replied that there are frequently gunshots in this area. I highly doubt it's that bad, but I know it is much less gentrified than east of I-90. Does anyone here have any better information on what Scranton is like north of I-90?

Ha, it was part of the suspense. :) J/K I had it in my mind to put it in and must have forgotten to type it. The spot was at Edgewater Park, not too far east of the entrance off of Cliff Drive/West Blvd.

I was just at both Edgewater and Huntington yesterday (only PARTLY inspired by this thread, I was going to Huntington anyways) and I am about 99.99999% sure I was standing at the exact spot this photo was taken from. The funny thing is that there was a guy taking down a big tripod and fancy camera from this spot. Maybe he was from Forbes? :)

Was that necessary? OMNIMAX plays IMAX films, just in a 3D dome format. I didn't know you meant just a rectangular IMAX theater screen. All you had to do was specify without the attitude.

I think that photo in this thread was taken from Edgewater Park just behind where this other one was. EDIT: I just did some Photoshopping and it does seem that both photos were taken from nearly the same spot (just one back a little bit from the water). I scaled both pics to the same size and overlaid them, then played with the opacity. The angle of the buiuldings matches yup perfectly, and the trees from Edgewater's eastern half (looking to be about halfway between the photographer and downtown) line up perfectly as well.
