I am not taking it in college, I no longer need it since I changed my major. Thank god because I hate calculus! I feel old now saying I don't remember some things from my classes in college (I'm 29), but I had to take a lot of math, and I remember needing the calculator more in the science and engineering classes than most of my math classes.

It would take me forever to finish a calculus exam. Otherwise, I can still do math in my head as well as on paper. :) A calculator usually doesn't help on a calculus exam, as you have to show your work step by step.

Where is this stairway? I have never noticed it and couldn't find it on Google Maps or Google Street View. Thanks.
  4. I think pali's point was that the tall buildings statistical argument is used against Rome the same way that the number of jobs lost statistical argument is used against Cleveland, when in both cases there's much more than that that makes a city great.
  5. Yes, and please provide the source so we can check out the others. EDIT: I think I found it. http://www.bls.gov/web/laummtrk.htm Cleveland, OH has an unemployment rate of 8.7%, which puts them at 182 (tied with Indianapolis).

I agree, I'm not so sure what building a grass bridge and modern rapid station over the railroad tracks would do to the quaint feel of Murray Hill.
  8. Not just freight rail...Amtrak runs on those tracks as well! :)

I wonder how many other of her kids were supposed to be the last one.
  10. Isn't that what the "www" in http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,3595.270/topicseen.html#quickreply stands for?
  11. Mentor schools have been having a lot of trouble lately with the suicide and three sexual assaults reported in the last year: Mentor music teacher accused of sexually assaulting student at summer band camp
  12. I have had this discussion with exurbans. I find it's more that they don't care that their suburb will eventually face problems. They view it as being far enough down the road that they'll worry about it at that point, and just pick another suburb to move to (further from the city).

Grammatically, that would be correct. "You hair wants cut" would not be. Just as "the clothes need washed" is not correct but "the clothes need washing" is. Now, logically speaking, I don't think it makes much sense, unless it's some special hair.
  14. So did they film him in LA and "green screen" him onto a shot of Cleveland?

There's a type colloquilalism I've noticed that drives me batsh!t crazy. Somebody (i.e. my assistant) will say / type out in an email "this needs completed", or "this needs updated" No, dear, this "needs" a verb. My mother-in-law always says "The clothes need washed." She thought I was nuts when I told her it was grammatically incorrect. Since then I have noticed other people who say the same thing. Apparently it's fairly common in the Midwest, especially as you get closer to Pittsburgh. http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/news/mcintyre/blog/2009/03/this_needs_edited.html
  16. Thanks for the info. I have noticed that as well. Do you know what used to be in that space?
  17. Yes, I notcied this on Saturday night as well. The new Valerio's location looks much more modern than the old space. I don't know if I like that, since I have the memory of getting engaged next to the fireplace in the cozy old Valerio's. :)
  18. You shouldn't. But you also would probably take steps to lessen that noise if you could.
  19. That's an AVERAGE of 94.7 MPH. Where's the YIKES girl?
  20. My opinion is that you two should take this argument to PM. :)
  21. It seems Detroit may have a beef: http://www.crimetrends.com/id4.html
  22. Exactly, I chuckled at the phone booth and Leading the Country in Drifters or whatever they said (haven't watched it since I first saw it) but other than that it was just kind of lame. I didn't take any great offense to it though.
  23. A coworker sent that to me last week thinking he would get me all riled up, but I think I shocked him when I said "eh, whatever, at least it was kind of funny."
  24. Normally, I think their lists are crap because they use general wording to make claims which aren't really supported by the data used to make the list. The underlying data is usually valid however. If they say Top 15 Happy Place cities and then use crime rate to rank them, you can argue that has nothing to do with a city being the most Happy Place. However, you can use the crime rate data for what it's worth. In this study, they rank cities based on MSA violent crime rate. I didn't even read the wording of the slides, but they do provide violent crime rates of the MSAs which you can use to compare the metros objectively (or at least moreso than simply comparing central city violent crime rates, or subjective things like "happiness factors" or whatever else they have used for other lists).
