  1. I was just about to say the same thing. Not to bash Pittsburgh, because it has a lot of things going for it and some very nice neighborhoods, but I have noticed on a few occasions that the downtown area is very dead in the evenings.

As far as maintaining traffic flow AND having a nice park area, I really like the DC approach (although it would be WAY too expensive I'm sure) of having the inner lanes of one road (probably Ontario) dip under the entire intersection, and the outer lanes enter the square. This removes a lot of traffic from the square (and lets it flow through), which would make it not as big of a deal to cut the other road off at the outer sides of the square. So you end up with no roads cutting through the square AND less congestion on the sides of the square (otherwise people might feel trapped inside of a rat race if the traffic is too heavy on the sides of the square).

  5. No, there is hardly any contiguous class A office space available downtown (and not much total available, single-digit class A vacancy rate right now).

  7. ^^I agree MTS...I think too many people think the only growth is new companies moving in...not existing ones getting larger. ^Many of the companies moving are expanding, aren't they?
  8. I'm sure the Cobol code is very maintainable. I'd love to have to integrate with it. But, yes, I see now that that is what the article is referring to. I should have read more closely.
  9. I was surprised the other night at how not-so-bright the lights were. But only the median lights and south side of the street lights were on (which still make up 75% of the total lights). Are the north side lights on now?

Yeah, my question was in a different thread which had no activity since January 2005, so it didn't make quite as much sense when moved over here. :) I just measured the distance the ferry would travel (sorry if it has been mentioned previously, I didn't see it, but that may be because I'm falling asleep at the keyboard) on Google Maps and it was 82 miles. I didn't realize it was so far. They definitely didn't pick a straight-across-the-lake route. But it does seem to make sense, landing very near London.

    Far out? Europe (where it does work) is fantasy land? Seemingly with ODOT. It's a shame when the policy-makers have a biased opinion and throw out wild claims and mischaracterizations without any facts to back them up. EDIT: By the way KJP, when did the Sprawl of It All thread come back?

  17. Yep, 2nd and 3rd with one out down 6-5 bot 9 and we couldn't get the job done...two infield popouts. Worst offense the Indians have seen in a long time (possibly worse than late 80s and early 90s).
  18. Now I am worried. The Shoreway view was beautiful, especially in that shade of golden red with the sun going down, until that Photoshop-looking gray building appeared on the scene! :) Kidding, of course...I think this is great and I don't understand the pessimism. I think the size will perfectly transition Public Square into Stark's development. And to answer bizbiz...unless the building is built RIGHT up to the W. 3rd. St./Superior Ave. corner, I don't think it will block the view down Euclid:
  19. OK, sorry to be a pain in your butt. I'm just antsy because I will have a couple hundred out of towners at my wedding July 5 and I want to show them the best possible Cleveland I can (they are staying at the Wyndham and the reception is at the Union Club). If they walk out the front door into a pit of dirt they may not be too impressed. I know none of this is your concern, but it's obviously mine. Just an explanation as to why I was wondering I suppose. Keep up the good work.

I couldn't immediately find anything (I'm at work, I'm not going to be a super-sleuth right now) about Ohio's funding other than that the gas tax is the "primary" source of funding, meaning that plenty of tax dollars are being funneled in from other sources when considering the massive amounts we spend on roads. We wouldn't be averse to that idea here! Good luck getting the funding for THAT though!
  21. Is there some information on completed dates on that website? I couldn't find anything? Also, JMasek, do you have an update on the E. 12th St./Euclid Ave. intersection? It seems as progress has stopped on it and looks like the end of May estimate for completion will not be hit. Thanks.

    The US has spread out because of cars. Now that gas prices are rising, you may see that change. The eastern half of the US really isn't all that spread out, and the Ohio Hub would connect large population centers distributed similarly to many European cities. The only reason it is more convenient to drive is because we DON'T HAVE a good rail system. If we had a 150 MPH train many more people would use it. I know I would use it for nearly all my trips (except to the West Coast). The gas tax doesn't even come close to covering the cost of road repairs and construction. The rest of the money comes from all of us. Of course we're not, but gas prices may. Also, we shouldn't be ENCOURAGING sprawl as we have been. We are just trying to be ready for the effects skyrocketing gas prices will have on us. Even die-hard suburbanites may have to live somewhere they don't want to. (Hey, I'd love a Victorian mansion in Newport, RI but I just can't afford it.)
