Suburban Sprawl News & Discussion
Typical westsider comment. Here's how every conversation actually goes: WEST: Hey Eastside, you guys think you're so great, but we're so much better! EAST: Nobody ever said that, Mister Strawman. Why so defensive? WEST: We're the best, you just can't admit it! EAST: We got no beef. You do you. We like the eastside, but we like coming to the westside, too. WEST: You sound stuck up, always thinking you're the best. We're the best! EAST: Whatevs. Carry on.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
Wait, say what?! Do you mind expanding on that a bit? EDIT: OK, so I just read the previous page and the sarcastic anecdotes. I assume this is a continuation of those?

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
FWIW, I have ridden Amtrak out of Cleveland at least 20 times, usually for about a week at a time, and I have never had a problem. Although I will admit that I do feel a little relief when I come back and my windows aren't smashed.

Shaker Heights: Van Aken District Transit Oriented Development
I agree. Farnsleigh needs to go on a road diet. There is no reason it needs to be any more than one lane each way and then a third lane for left turns at Warrensville and maybe into Tuttle.

Shaker Heights: Van Aken District Transit Oriented Development
Property taxes are what are so high in Shaker Heights. Income tax isn't out of line with most other communities (2.25% with a 1% credit). The library system could probably save a little bit on the property taxes, but trash service and other city services are funded through the income tax. Schools are by far the largest contribution to the property tax rate.

39% is probably still much better than their win% on the road in this timeframe.

Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
My point wasn't that Cleveland and Cincinnati don't also have plenty of autocentric hellholes. It was that the fact that Columbus has more density to their autocentric hellholes, giving it a higher density measurement, doesn't necessarily translate into it feeling like a more dense city to most people.

Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
That would only make sense if the difficult topography was in a ring preventing outward expansion. I've said it a thousand times, and others are saying it now I see: Columbus is statistically denser than it feels because of all the suburban-style, car-centric apartment complexes that are technically dense but not interconnected, multi-use, or walkable.

I heard a rumor (although not sure how reliable it is) that Heinen's is interested in the space for one of their smaller format stores.

Can't wait for yabo's analysis of that.

Cleveland: Population Trends
The 5 county MSA alone has over 2 million people. I don't know where those numbers are from. Here is the data straight from the Census website for the 2020 Populations and the Vintage 2021 Population Estimates:

A 20 foot deep pocket park? Lol, that's barely more than a treelawn in many areas.

Also, out of 20 coffee shops listed, only one was east of downtown, which I find odd. Is Yelp just full of west side hipsters?

You probably won't feel gross after this and the price is still not too high: https://www.churchofthegesu.org/fish-fries-at-gesu-

Amtrak & Federal: Passenger Rail News
Small town stops take very little time. I would guess between slowing down, stopping for a minute or two, and starting up again, each stop costs the train maybe 3 or 4 minutes. Put 2 or 3 in between Cleveland and Columbus and 2 or 3 more between Cincinnati and Columbus and you've only added 15-20 minutes to the entire trip (and half that if you're not going all the way to Cincinnati).

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
While we're in suburban territory, Jim's Open Kitchen in Solon is pretty good for a greasy spoon old school diner as well (although I still definitely recommend Kleifeld's if you only want to make one trip out to the burbs.) Also, Kleifeld's is only 23 minutes from Ohio City, which is actually about 5 minutes closer than Solon, and downtown Willoughby is much more interesting than "downtown Solon". There used to be a place right in the heart of Chagrin Falls, but I don't believe it survived the influx of upscale establishments. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Bob-N-Sheri's FortyNiner. https://www.yelp.com/biz/bob-and-shers-49er-cleveland

Hyperloop
IMO the problem with the Hyperloop isn't that it *can't* eventually be done. It's that people are underestimating how long it will take to be operational, underestimating the costs to do so, and overestimating the benefits. When flying first became a thing, it was revolutionary because it meant you could get places over 5 times faster than any mode of travel available to the masses. Therefore, the incredible amount of time and money needed to perfect air travel paid off because of the huge benefit. Now that there is high speed rail that can already go half the speed of the *hypothetical maximum* speed of Hyperloop, and airplanes that already go just as fast, the impact won't be as big, and there isn't as much incentive to dump as much time and money into making the technology work as there was for flying.

Maybe by "Columbus" he actually means Hilliard.

Cleveland Heights: Development and News
I noticed on Google Maps that CHUH school district busses are parked in the parking lot near Mayfield Rd. and what appears to be a maintenance garage sits behind the parking lot, but both the front and rear parcels are owned by the synagogue. Does CHUH have an agreement to use this property for their own purposes, and if so, I wonder what they'll use instead?

I'm pretty sure they just recycle these same articles over and over every couple months.
