Cleveland: Demolition Watch
Don't worry, MTS thinks The Green Lantern is a good movie, so his judgement has been called into question.

And it's all fit onto the size of what was one small Little League baseball field previously, without feeling cramped.

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
How far below the level of Public Square is the base of the building? I would guess that "Ground Level" at Level 4 would be just about the level of most of downtown, meaning the building will rise to about the height of a 300' building around Public Square, meaning it should be very visible from most angles.

Cleveland: "The Avengers" Picture Thread *SPOILER ALERT*
Not that there's any objective way to measure one movie vs. another, but I think Rotten Tomatoes is a pretty good barometer: Green Lantern - 26% - http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/green_lantern/ Captain America: The First Avenger - 79% - http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/captain-america/ Thor - 77% - http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/thor/ X-Men: First Class - 87% - http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/x_men_first_class/ Jam thanks for the reminder. Addition to my to do list: fire everyone at Flixster. And every reviewer? They're just an aggregator. Anyway, Metacritic agrees as well (both critic and user reviews).

I didn't take issue with you saying we should care what suburbanites think, I was just providing context. The part I disagreed with was that you were characterizing suburbanites as people that love to go downtown and shop. Sure, the clientele on E. 4th is most likely a heavy majority suburban, but that's still a very small percentage of total suburbanites. I still maintain that most suburbanites do not go downtown often or hardly ever. Luckily, there's enough that do to support some places, but just think of how vibrant downtown would be if we could double or triple the percentage of suburbanites that came downtown.

Regardless of people's reasons for not coming downtown (which is where this conversation headed), this whole discussion started with R&R's claim that catering to what suburbanites think about downtown is as important as what residents think (with respect to an incident involving a naked man running down W. 25th St.) because they are the people who dine and shop downtown every day. http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,4065.msg571849.html#msg571849 Basically, my point was that most suburbanites do not dine and shop downtown often at all, and some almost never (and that R&R is an atypical suburbanite for going downtown often). I think the discussion in this thread has just proven this to be true.

Small Appliance Repair
My wife is looking for a shop (or just a person) who can repair a Kitchenaid mixer. According to the company, there are no authorized Kitchenaid repair shops around Cleveland (boo!), and we're having trouble finding a place that will fix a small appliance. If anyone has any suggestions, it'd be greatly appreciated!

Another Dumb-a$$ List / Ranking of Cities
Well outside of Cleveland schools and a few other districts, I don't think it makes much difference. I did just fine in a "lower rung" school district. Just because a bunch of parents with smart kids moved to Solon and have kids in school there doesn't mean your child will be smart too. And if they are smart, they'd likely do well at 95% of public schools. Also, there are plenty of kids who find trouble in Solon. But regardless, even if it was the best school district in the state, or regardless of whatever practical reasons there may be to live there, you can't convince me (or many others I know) that there's anything beautiful or interesting about places like Westminister Dr. I have been there plenty. I used to work in Solon and would go to lunch in Chagrin Falls quite often. I still stand by the fact that it's a depressingly generic place. Sure, it has a lot of fairly wealthy people and families. That's not my issue with it. What is depressing to me is that people with means are choosing such generic places to live their lives, much in the way it's depressing to me how many people choose Applebee's or a similarly generic restaurant when they go out to eat. When the further out suburb becomes the next craze, Solon will be passed over like Maple Heights and Bedford are now, and its schools will slide as well. There's nothing of lasting appeal there. It's the "flavor of the month" suburb of choice right now, that's it.

I can't think of a single thing I like about Solon. Oh wait, I thought of ONE...it's only 4 miles to Chagrin Falls from there.

Another Dumb-a$$ List / Ranking of Cities
I'm sorry. I street viewed that street, and it was soul-crushing enough just looking at it on the computer. If you want beauty without density, take a ride through Bratenahl, the Chagrin Valley, or Waite Hill, not a tacky 1980s McMansion development in Solon. It baffles me that anybody thinks that junk (North Dallas Special) is nice, but especially on Urban Ohio. http://janiewilsonsstrongfingers.blogspot.com/2007/12/north-dallas-special.html By the way, just because those homes are big doesn't mean they're built well. Most of the ones I saw on Street View had siding on the sides with a thin facade of brick or stone on the front. Hardly the types of buildings that will be around in 150 years (I actually have a friend that lives in a house like those, and it's literally falling apart at the seams even though it's only 19 years old).

Did somebody just say that Westminster Dr. in Solon was nice?!?!?!??!?!?! Anybody, take a street view there. Tell me that's not the worst of the worst stereotypical McMansion development. Am I still on UrbanOhio or what?????

Well it's kind of a chicken and egg problem as far as playgrounds and retail go. These things didn't exist in many suburbs until people with kids starting moving out there. I still think that regardless of what people say, mostly it boils down to people being so used to the suburbs that it's their comfort zone.

No, encouraging means just that. I see us moving in the right direction. It doesn't mean I'm satisfied with where we are, but I'm encouraged that we seem to be improving rather than self-destructing like we had been. It means that I expect the team to get better and it seems like it may realistically happen, not that I'm satisfied with them being where they're at.

Has it always been torn up? Will it always be torn up? That's a little short-sighted, isn't it? Besides, there is green space at Mall A. And by the Science Center.

Wow, nothing to do on the lakefront? You think walking around the lakefront is boring? There's nothing I can say to that, that is ridiculous. Nature is beautiful. See, it works both ways. My point is that I think it has more to do with people not wanting to stray outside of their comfort zone than there actually not being anything to do downtown for kids. Sure, there are things you can do with the kids in the suburbs. But there are things for kids to experience downtown that they can't in the suburbs as well. Running around the grass on the Mall is just as fun as (or more fun than) running around in the grass at the Metroparks. Some kids will like the woods, sure. And some would rather walk amongst skyscrapers and marvel at all the activity downtown. I didn't enjoy woods when I was young (or at least for an extended amount of time, it gets rather repetitive after a while to me), but I loved the variety and activity downtown. Obviously, this will be different for each child. I don't see one as being obviously superior to the other, though. However, I do question how in the world a 2-year old can go on a 5-mile hike. http://www.babycenter.com/0_hiking-with-your-child_8256.bc#articlesection3
