The answers to your questions are complex and not simply "people love suburbia", as you seem to imply. The fact that you're a planner does not mean you understand the answers to these questions, but rather hints at why our land use continues down the path it is on, even in the face of increasing demand for density.

How is Toronto twice as dense as New York? Or are those MSA densities?

My biggest annoyance is stop signs. It seems like at some intersections when traffic is a little heavier people have a mentality that they can go after waiting a few seconds, regardless of how long anyone else has been waiting or if it's their turn. But even worse are the people (and there are MANY) who follow right behind the person in front of them and double up going through the stop sign so you have to wait fro two cars instead of one. It's like they are purposely trying to piss you off since they know you aren't going to be stupid and try to squeeze between them and the car in front of them. Kind of like when 4 cars turn left after the left turn arrow goes off and the people coming the other way have to wait for them all to clear the intersection well after their light has turned green. Basically, many drivers are just selfish and think others should just have to wait for them so they can get to where they want to go a little faster.
  5. And in the arts district downtown on Superior (east of the PD).
  6. The Republican assault on non wealthy white exurban people continues.
  7. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbia_Building_(Louisville,_Kentucky) EDIT: Wow, I guess I hand't refreshed the page in a while. Sorry about that. There were like 4 new replies after my post went up. Speaking of which, is there some way to display a warning with SMF when you go to posts and new posts were added in the meantime? I know vBulletin supports this.
  8. For those complaining about the forum being bland, there are plenty of styles out there that could have been experimented with after the site was running smoothly (remember that the SMF forum used to have a different style until recently): http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/forumdisplay.php?s=607b7777230f5cadfd76c8c0195d1dd3&f=247&daysprune=-1&order=desc&sort=voteavg I find it funny that the official thread for vBulletin 4 styles is on a vBulletin 3 forum.

In theory no, because the homeless individuals will be returned to a supportive environment where they could be raised out of homelessness with the help of friends/family. I don't doubt though that some of the individuals will fall back into homelessness if they return to bad habits and/or friends/family don't live up to commitments to provide help. Ahh I see, I didn't read that closely enough. Don't most homeless people have no support system (anywhere), though? I mean if there is family in another city that is willing and has the means to take care of a homeless relative, don't you think they already would have paid the minimal amount for a Greyhound ticket for them?

If every city did this, wouldn't we just be paying to bus homeless people around the country, and ending up with roughly as many being bussed in as being bussed out?
  11. Was it the new library branch? http://www.cuyahoga.lib.oh.us/StdBackPage.aspx?id=33976
  12. This is disgusting. At least the dumpy plaza that was there had most of the parking behind it.
  13. That is why I don't care too much about these lists. We have the Cleveland Clinic, but that doesn't show up on the list. We will have Lubrizol, but that won't show up on the list. Blah blah blah who cares...
  14. "You don't live here do you?" "I live downtown." SLAM
  15. It works with the old as well, but Rich has to change the configuration so it points at the right location. The same thing happened when we switched to the new...it didn't work for a couple days.
  16. I had this problem at first. It seemed as if the New Posts link wasn't working right at first. But then it was, and it worked the same as "Show unread posts since last visit." with the added advantage of having the double down arrow to go right to the first unread post. The Settings link at the top of the page would take you to your Subscribed threads, which (since vBulletin subscribes you to threads you post in automatically) is pretty much the equivalent of "Show new replies to your posts." After I figured this out, I liked vBulletin 4.0 100x more.
  17. You're playing with my emotions ColDayMan! First, I didn't want to switch. You told me vBulletin was great. Then we switched and I hated it. Then I got used to it. Then I actually started liking it. Then I decided, "wow, this is actually really nice, that darn ColDayMan was right!" Now we're right back where we started except that I now agree with you that vBulletin 4.0 is actually pretty cool, so I voted for it.
  18. Or it could just be the truth. Again, I think you're mistaking your preferences for every suburbanites. First of all, you post on Urban Ohio, so you're not an average suburbanite. I work with a bunch of people that think I'm a whackjob just for reading this forum. One of them recently said something about how there are nice neighborhoods in the Heights but he'd be afraid "they might invade" (no lie, exact words) since it's "too close to the bad areas". Now tell me his choices in where to live aren't in at least some part racially (or at the very least socioeconomically) motivated.

To a certain degree. Both cities have areas with nice older homes. Cleveland has nothing like the Mexican War Streets. However, Pittsburgh also seems to have a higher proportion of what feels like cheap Appalachian wood frame housing, like something you'd see in an old mountain town in West Virginia. Cleveland's housing stock overall feel "sturdier" or something, and our inner ring suburban housing stock blows theirs away. But we also have more areas with abandonment than Pittsburgh. So I guess overall I'm trying to say it's really hard to objectively say one's better than the other. They're just different. I like Pittsburgh, but I always end up liking Cleveland even more when I come back from there. I can definitely see why some people could prefer one over the other. For me, I prefer Cleveland.
  20. Based on the stats, there are 212 African Americans in the entire city of Middleburg Heights. Even if every single one of them lived in your apartment complex, it'd still be less than 20% black. Granted, that is still fairly diverse, especially for a suburb. However, I don't think you can extrapolate your experience then to a discussion on why most suburbanites live in the suburbs. If your apartment complex really is diverse, that makes the REST of Middleburg Heights all that much less diverse, which furthers the point that most people living there are living amongst almost no diversity.

If you aren't comfortable with it, it's likely a good idea not to do it. There are some cool things you can do, but not nearly cool enough (especially if you aren't a tech geek) to void an extended warranty. I don't usually think of that aspect since I hate extended warranties.

I added "don't" in there because I'm assuming that's what you meant. You're correct. There's only a few streets in Cleveland that look anything like the square miles of complete abandonment found in Detroit. However, I would still say there are more depressed urban areas in Cleveland. Pittsburgh still has its fair share, though, such as the area west and north of the Mexican War Streets and the Hill District.

That's why I suggested learning how to return it to stock. If you reload the original software, there's no way for them to know you ever rooted it. Sure, there are cases where you could get screwed, but how often does a manufacturer's warranty actually cover your broken phone? If they want to be jerks about it, they'll say you broke it and it's not covered, and if they want to be nice about it (which has actually been my experience at Verizon stores most of the time) they don't even care you rooted it and will replace it anyways, sometimes with an obligatory "you aren't really supposed to do that".
  24. Huh? Diverse? One black person out of about 70 isn't diverse! I'm pretty sure you live in Middleburg Heights now from some past statements. From Wikipedia: The racial makeup of the city was 94.63% White, 1.33% African American, 0.15% Native American, 2.26% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.28% from other races, and 1.28% from two or more races. And North Olmsted: The racial makeup of the city was 93.97% White, 1.01% African American, 0.13% Native American, 2.74% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and 1.68% from two or more races. Sorry, 90%+ white is anything but diverse. Sadly, there's probably many people from lily white (99%+) suburbs that think having 1 or 2% of a specific minority is "a lot".

Likely yes, but Dillards in Higbees was just as much of an "institution" and we all know how well that went for Cleveland.
