The Android Scam
Rooted means you're a tech geek. :) Seriously, it's not very hard to do. It basically means loading something onto your phone which gives you access to things you weren't really meant to have access to (which is why you can do things like remove preloaded apps that they don't want you to remove). If you do decide to do it, know that it's easier to do than even the instructions may make it seem, but you should learn how to undo it ("take it back to stock") should you need to take it back to the store for some reason.

Suburban Sprawl News & Discussion
And driving is free? Besides, we didn't say it was always easier. There are tradeoffs. Sometimes it may be easier to get to a store in an urban area, and sometimes it may be easier in the suburbs. However, more driving will almost always be required in the suburbs, and the original statement was simply that people living in the city would be more immune to high transportation costs.

Suburban Sprawl News & Discussion
The move downtown where the party room's free! :) And why do you assume you have to walk everywhere? Many people in the city still have a car for the times they need to go places when walking isn't feasible, and then there's always that awful thing called public transportation.

Cleveland or Pittsburgh???????????
Actually, Cleveland does have a Market Square! :)

Cleveland or Pittsburgh???????????
I agree, but I honestly don't know how Saks survives downtown there. Here are their hours: HOURS Monday - Wednesday - 10 AM - 6 PM Thursday - Friday - 10 AM - 7 PM Saturday - 10 AM - 6 PM Sunday - 12 PM - 5 PM Also, look up "Saks Pittsburgh lease" on Google and you'll see that it's very likely they won't be downtown in a year and a half (rumor has it that they may move to the Ross Park Mall). Pittsburgh bent over backwards to bring four department stores downtown a while back, but two closed rather quickly, and now it looks like Macy's may be the lone survivor. Outside of this, there's not much retail to speak of in either city.

The Android Scam
A phone isn't a phone. If you're gonna complain about general crappiness of it, you can't compare a free bottom-of-the-line Android phone to an expensive Apple phone. That's the beauty of Android. You can be cheap and get a free craptacular phone if you want, or you can splurge and get something like the Thunderbolt. You have choices. With Apple it's nothing or spend a ton and get what they want you to have. Speaking of things I've found a use for on Android, the Amazon Cloud Player is a HUGE 1-up over anything the iPhone offers right now as far as playing music is concerned.

Cleveland or Pittsburgh???????????
I agree with much of what you said ColDayMan except for the downtowns. Pittsburgh is completely dead on weekends, even when there's a Pirates game going on. There is absolutely nothing like the Warehouse District or E. 4th in downtown Pittsburgh. I do have to say that I love the architecture and density of downtown Pittsburgh, though.

Cleveland Guardians Discussion
The last two nights were well above normal. Yeah, most of April has sucked, but the average high is still only 59, and it was in the upper 70s the last two days with no rain.

Ohio Drivers
As much as I'd prefer better train service down to Florida, you're absolutely right about I-95. It pains me to say it, but it really ought to be 3-lanes the whole way. There's just too much RV and truck traffic (and thus a variance in the speed of traffic) for 2 lanes.

That's a perfect description of the "wave". It's also the method people use to be racist in today's world. .....Elaborate please. Sorry, I didn't mean the wave itself. I just meant that people are much more passive-aggressive in displaying certain behaviors, especially non-PC ones like racism. I believe this is why many people mistakenly believe racism is nearly non-existent, they just don't realize it has changed. The wave is just the driving analogy to that. People feel better about themselves because they didn't flick the other person off, but they really had the same intentions (a gesture to piss the other guy off, and I might even say the smug wave is worse than the angry finger if you're on the receiving end of someone being a jerk). But this is getting off-topic, so I'll divert back to... I'm not so sure about R&R's assessment of drivers on each side of town. I haven't found many differences. The only thing I notice differently is that the non-interstate roads tend to be more confusing on the east side of town (especially around the Heights, Shaker Square, and University Circle) which causes big disparities between those who have local knowledge and those who don't, which of course leads to frustrations and aggressions. Outside of that, though, and especially on the interstates, I really don't think there's much difference at all.

Cleveland or Pittsburgh???????????
My boss is from Pittsburgh. I showed him this picture and he said "the funny part is that's probably a woman."

I think part of it is that I-271 encourages really fast travel. It has to be the widest freeway in the state and it's very straight and flat.

Cleveland or Pittsburgh???????????
I'm not trying to start an argument. There are things I really like about Pittsburgh. Carson St. is like nothing we have in Cleveland. However, I've found that on weekends, downtown Pittsburgh is completely dead (and almost downright scary). I think Carson St. sucks any non-work hours activity out of downtown. And I'm not sure I buy the employment "facts". Aren't unemployment rates similar? And Cleveland has many more tech jobs than people give it credit for. Pittsburgh does have more density in pockets which makes for some great neighborhoods. Both cities are great in their own way. You have to just spend some time in each to see what you like better (I know that's easier said than done).

The Android Scam
I have had a Droid since the first day it came out and have never had a problem (except for the couple I mention below). The battery life is still good, even after a year of overclocking it (it's rooted). Anyway, I believe your problem is a hardware issue, David. So the only problems I have had with the phone are when it gets very wet. The capacitive touch screen goes bonkers. It will "phantom click" all over the screen, doing random crap. One time I didn't even notice the screen was going wacky and I ended up with a deleted contact, a 15 second phone call to someone, and a text message draft with a bunch of random letters. The only way to stop it was to pull the battery and let it dry out a little. I'm going to guess your problem is that your touch screen is simply defective. By the way, I've known about 10 people that had the original Droid, and none of them have had any problems. Both my wife and I drop our phones much more than we should and both our phones are still in great shape. I guarantee you an iPhone would have a cracked screen by now (3 of my friends have cracked their iPhone screens in the last year). PS - I think it's ridiculous this thread is named "The Android Scam" considering the millions of happy Android users there are out there.

Cleveland: Smoking Ban in parks and public places
Isn't that what things like noise level ordinances are? (Or are you against those as well?)
-
Cleveland: Smoking Ban in parks and public places
Huh? That was a snarky reply to 327's assertion that being in an enclosed room with a car is more unhealthy about than smokers in a public park (a purposefully fallacious argument in response to a fallacious argument). I never even mentioned kids.

Cleveland: Smoking Ban in parks and public places
Do we allow cars to drive right up next to a slide and idle?
-
Cleveland: Smoking Ban in parks and public places
Of course that's possible. We need to work on banning that crap, too. It should be illegal for restaurants to use anything harmful without your knowing. (And once again, I prefer just forcing them to notify you of what they're using rather than banning it, but either route is better than nothing.)

Cleveland: Smoking Ban in parks and public places
You may think it's tiring, but it's true. I'm a lawyer. I have a profound respect for the law. That doesn't mean I think it's a good idea to enact "honor" laws like the outdoor smoking ban. That's just a mockery of the law, it creates more law breakers without any ramifications. By all means, it should be okay to stroll down E. 4th with a cup of beer, to use marijuana, to sleep in your car....it's an issue of personal freedom to me. I agree. Behavioral micromanagement is a misuse of the legal process. It leads to less respect for all laws, including the important ones. I believe laws should reasonably protect us from each other. Whether laws should protect us from ourselves is a tougher question. When emergency room visits cost taxpayer dollars, there is an argument for it. Regardless, banning smoking in public places seems like a logical step to protecting us considering how much more me know about its harmful effects than we used to, and considering that it's an action harmful to people other than just the one participating in it. Just like drinking and driving. You can sit in your basement and get as messed up as you want, but once you get behind the wheel you're endangering the rest of us. Yes, some laws go beyond that and there should be arguments that those laws are a misuse of the legal process (including some of the ones you mentioned). However, I don't really see that being the case here. And I agree with Hoot's point on the restaurants. I would have preferred that they were forced to label their menus with the type of oil so we could make a decision. But I think a ban is better than not dealing with the issue.

Cleveland: Smoking Ban in parks and public places
"Why can't I scream fire in a crowded theater?"..."How long until I am not allowed to talk at all?" "Why can't I drink while I am driving?"..."How long until I am not allowed to drink at all?" "Why am I not allowed to do cocaine?"..."How long until I can't drink Coca-Cola?" "Why am I not allowed to spit on a police officer?"..."How long until I am not allowed to spit?" "Why am I not allowed to urinate on Hts121's front door?"..."How long until I am not allowed to urinate?" You get the point.

Agree, specifically the building across the street (always forget the name of it).

Cleveland: Random Quick Questions
North of Detroit and east of W. 65th the only new houses I can think of are the two on W. 54th near the Shoreway and some new townhomes near the back of Max Hayes. Other than that, that census tract is mostly a big school, some factories, stores along the north side of Detroit, and a small amount of average older D/S homes. I really find it hard to believe there's not something funky going on with that median home value.

Cleveland: Random Quick Questions
That's where the new construction is concentrated. Isn't nearly all of the new construction WEST of W. 65th?
