  1. If a muncipality really can't afford to offer the full range of services it needs to cut services, or even surrender its charter and de-incorporate, shifting the services burden onto counties, which sort of is a back-door way into consolidation and streamlining. The whole point of government services is that they are necessary and the cost should be shared. Those who can afford to pay more do. However, the Republican method of getting around this is to consolidate into pockets of wealth (suburbs) and then "localize" government. This way, wealthy people only pay for the services they use and don't have to help subsidize these services for the poorer people they so despise (even though they often create a higher demand for these services by abandoning the neighborhoods the poorer people live in, leaving an overbuilt infrastructure, abandoned buildings, and rampart poverty behind). It's selfishness and greed at its best and defeats the whole purpose of having public services in the first place. And Kasich is implementing this policy faster and more directly than any politician I have seen in a while.
  2. Or it puts more of a burden on each municipality for its own public services, which hurts the poorer cities and helps the wealthier ones. Which fits in perfectly with Kasich's other actions.

When I type "commerical" in Gmail, "commercial" is the only spell-check suggestion. EDIT: If I type "comerical" though, "commercial" is not a suggestion.
  4. Chicago is car-friendly?

I doubt many of us here are "owners", including you. (Or do you have your own practice already?) We were specifically talking about public sector unions. The employer is the government. By extension, that means us--we pay for it, and we vote for the "managers" of the "capital" that we "invest" (read: we vote for the people spending the taxes we pay). I was speaking more generally, but I see your point. However, with respect to the government, we are all customers as well.

I doubt many of us here are "owners", including you. (Or do you have your own practice already?) A very small percentage of the country holds nearly all of the capital. The rest of us are laborers and are at their mercy.

Exactly, and I really don't understand how so many people are currently siding with the "owners" rather than the "laborers" right now, considering the income gap is wider than it has been in a long time.
  8. My favorite quote on that article is in response to discoman's "move it to columbus":
  9. I can't wait for the day when one corporation owns everything, including the government!

The main problem with so many people today is that they don't want any government program they don't benefit from, but they don't mind the ones they do. Obviously, not everybody will end up happy this way. The idea of government funding is that there are certain things which need to be funded that are important enough that the whole of society should support them rather than individuals who deem those things important. Determining what things are important enough to be funded this way is what we argue about. Arguing that everything should be funded through private donations is (IMO) naive and unrealistic.

And not only that, but much of private "giving" is towards organizations wealthy people have a personal interest in, like the Art Museum or the Orchestra, not the homeless or low-income single mothers.
  12. The only thing that irks me is that they consider Denver a potential market but not Cleveland? Our downtown runs circles around Denver's, the metro areas are nearly identical in size, and I'm pretty sure we're more of a business traveler's destination. Everyone's just on a "Denver's so cool" kick right now because they have mountains and are growing. Well, sure, they're growing, but I hardly think Highlands Ranch is sustainable (nor long-term desirable, it will be completely outdated in 20 years).
  13. I've been there a few times because it's a casual place to catch dessert and a drink. I have never eaten the food there and don't plan on it. I'd go to any number of places on E. 4th to eat dinner instead. However, for a wide selection of desserts and to have a fun drink (especially for the ladies) or two, it's a nice "in between place" to go (between dinner and finishing the night off at a more alcohol-oriented place like jbw suggested). That said, I do think it's a little overpriced for what it is, and I much prefer the desserts and atmosphere at Le Petit Triangle, but that's over in Ohio City, and I don't know of another easygoing dessert place downtown, so that's why I've been there. It's not my favorite, but I don't not suggest it either. Also, it seems to be rather popular, and provides a nice view of E.4th and Euclid out the front windows.

Not really. I like that they added support for intraforum links (that keep you inside the app instead of opening a browser), but I can't think of anything that isn't intuitive about the app.
  15. I think it's because they know it is easy to talk a conservative suburbanite (or rural folk) into being against those "scary trains".

It's a go. I'll be there at 6 PM sharp (I have to leave by 7 PM).
  17. I haven't been there in over a year. I'll have to give it another try.

I know a lot of hardcore Republicans who absolutely hate Kasich and SB5.
  19. I was just about to post a reply to the comment above about Stone Oven having other locations. I highly recommend their other locations over the Eton one. I have never had a good experience there, and their selection seems more limited than the Lee Rd. restaurant (which is where they make their soups).

Ha, well I don't mind showing up as long as I'm not the only one. And it sounds like we have at least 3 confirmed. I say we're still on.

Shh! I was secretly hoping for a romantic dinner at the Jolly Scholar... :) Seriously, though, if no one else wants to come, we may have to move the date. I don't plan on being there much later than 7 PM anyway, though, so if we get a couple more commits, we're still on. I believe Emmie may still be planning on coming, and you never know when the mysterious Hts121 may show his face in this thread again. :) Any chance we could get a celebrity appearance from MayDay, KJP, or MTS? Either way, I'll make a concrete decision by noon tomorrow.

Just a heads up for anybody checking this thread and thinking of coming...if I don't get any objections to the Jolly Scholar by tomorrow morning, we will officially be moving the Happy Hour there.
  25. Yeah, but it also has less open land to build on, more expensive real estate, more competition from existing stock, and is considered "undesirable" by a large segment of the population. That is why for years most new development occurred in the suburbs. I think it is quite impressive (and encouraging) how much new construction is going on.
