  1. I can't believe I just noticed that Chicago is missing as well (or that nobody else has mentioned it), but that is another glaring omission. The CTA buses are some of the cleanest I have ridden. The system is expansive and has short headways. The rail system is well developed (although not the cleanest). And you can't beat the CTA Bus Tracker. A list without NYC on top and DC and Chicago at least in the top 10 (if not top 5) is a joke.

Does this mean Tapatalk support? You are the man, Rich!!!!!
  3. Or we could move the lunch meet...I haven't seen much response on that one.
  4. Cedar and Fairmount...across the street from Jillians.
  5. Out on the patio? :) I like that place better than McNulty's.
  6. There's nothing wrong with McNulty's. They have Dogfish Head on tap. :) I like dumpy Irish joints. They remind me of pubs on the other side of the pond. Although my Irish/Welsh family has been in this country for 300 years, I really feel at home in places like this. Must be in the blood. Like I said, I have not been to McNulty's recently, but besides the name, nothing seems irish about it to me. More like dumpy college joint than dumpy irish joint. to each his own though! I agree. For that vibe, some of the places on Lee Rd. probably fit the bill better.
  7. There's nothing wrong with Jolly Scholar either (I said I liked your choices). :)

  9. Denver and Austin made the list, but DC didn't????

    You got it now.
  11. If we meet in UC (I like Murray Hill's suggestions) on Thursday, February 17 at 6 PM, I would be able to make it.

  13. Does anybody have stats to back this up or know if it is true? I actually was having this discussion with my wife last night, and I told her the same thing. She thought I was wrong, and I wondered if it really is true, or if I was just repeating a non-truth I had heard from a few different people.
  14. I don't know about the places KJP mentioned, but some of the highest quality meat you can get at a Chinese restaurant on the west side is at Pearl of the Orient (just west of the old downtown Rocky River on Detroit Rd.). Same owners as the Shaker one? Yes, Shaker was the original restaurant. Now they have two, Pearl East (Shaker) (http://www.pearl-east.com) and Pearl West (Rocky River) (http://www.pearlwest.com). To me, they rank up there with Sun Luck Garden for my Best Chinese in Cleveland award. Also, they make and sell their own sauces, complete with nutrition facts on the bottle (which is nice so you can see how much better some are for you than others).

  16. I have rooted for the Steelers in the playoffs many times when the Browns were out of it (and I am a born and bred Clevelander that's a die-hard Browns fan). However, there were two quarterbacks this year I refused to root for: Roethlisberger and Favre.
  17. Don't the trains stop around 12:30? If you're riding the train just to ride it through the nice areas of Shaker, you could ride the Green Line to the end (Green Rd.) and back to Shaker Square (I don't think they'll even make you get off at the end). Riding back at 9 pm should be fine. My experience (aesthetically) at night, though, has been that you really can't see too much. I'm not so sure riding to the end of the line and back would really be worth it (although you go through some areas with really nice apartments - cue MTS - and houses) unless there's still daylight outside. The large houses and apartments are set back a little bit and Shaker Blvd. is a little dimly lit, so at night you don't take in too much.

Keep in mind that although the worst team in the NBA has the best chance at getting the first pick, it's still only a 25% chance. EDIT: I see smith beat me to it.

It's really not bad out at all today (so far). I hear it may get ugly this evening though, but mainly because of freezing rain and ice, not snow.
  20. Who established this as the sine qua non of a great transportation system? Who established driving as the sine qua non (ooh, I feel so special now that I used a Latin phrase) of a great transportation system? I would say that the fact that people who don't own a car or can't drive have no way of moving themselves besides walking or riding a bike in a "driving only" transportation system, that it would be a pretty easy argument for the inferiority of such a system, especially when the non-driving population is sizable. Keep in mind, nobody would be taking away others' right to drive. A system with choices would be much better than one without choices. Another fact many "driving only" advocates fail to look at is the marginal utility of adding more roads. I would think we far passed the point where the benefit outweighs the costs of paving more rural roads. If the 3 cars a day that use a bunch of remote roads have to go a mile out of the way to use a paved road, so be it. That money would have been much better spent moving hundreds of thousands of people around who can't or don't wish to drive.
  21. How is CH opposed to change? There was no opposition to Anatolia renovating a building on Lee Rd., or the reconstruction of the library, or the Brownstones of Derbyshire, etc. CH residents are not opposed to CHANGE per say. They're opposed to change which pushes them down the path of becoming your next typical suburb with strip plazas and large parking lots (like 99% of suburbs around). On a separate note, being progressive is different from wanting change. If all you ever want is change, you'd just be flipping back and forth on everything. Being progressive simply means moving in what is perceived as a forward path, while not being afraid to change IF NEED BE to get there.

You can guarantee that the step-up will survive any estate tax repeal. What you and other conservatives fail to realize in all this is that liberals are trying to prevent the income gap from spiraling out of control (which it is). That is only good for a very small portion of the country. The rest of us will be left to fight for scraps.

The median I posted was NET WORTH, not "liquid assets". Nice try, though.
  24. Is Pittsburgh "east coast"?

http://tax.ohio.gov/divisions/estate/index.stm As Ram23 said, there are no taxes on an initial amount (which is actually $338,333). Thus, I don't think the Average Joe is paying ANY estate tax. (The median net worth of Americans 65 and over is $232,000 as of 2009.) And even someone at DOUBLE the median net worth would only lose ($500,000 - $338,333)*.06 = $7,660 out of the estate to taxes (no federal estate taxes are paid on any estate worth less than $3.5 million), which equals about 1.5% of the estate. I;m not quite sure how the children are "bearing the burden" of anything when they receive $466,000 in assets (without any work required to receive it) and in turn only owe the government 1.5% of that amount in taxes. And considering the net value of the assets received is still $458,340, I would hardly say the estate has been "depleted". Oh, and newsflash......if I work my ass off and make $500,000, I pay a hell of a lot more in taxes than the inheritors of said estate in my example. So in short, your post was full of wild inaccuracies and misconceptions. Also, you keep referring to double taxation. However, you seem to ignore that money is always taxed once on the way in and once on the way out. This is why the sales tax isn't higher. Even proponents of the Fair Tax push for a sales tax MUCH higher than what we have now. Our taxes are simply distributed between the "inward taxes" (income, capital gains, etc.) and "outward taxes" (sales tax, estate tax, etc.). Just because I have paid income tax on money I have earned doesn't mean I am exempt from paying sales tax on that same money when I spend it. The same should apply for gifted money or money left to other through an estate. It needs to have the "outward tax" applied to it still.
