  1. As long as he can't do anything to the funding, I could care less what he yaps about.

Kasich getting some heat for his recent quote to state senator Nina Turner http://www.politicsdaily.com/2011/01/29/ohio-democrats-say-gov-john-kasich-ignoring-blacks-in-cabinet-h/ In the wake of appointing his state’s first cabinet in nearly 50 years without any racial diversity, and for telling an African-American lawmaker challenging him on his cabinet picks, “I don’t need your people," Kasich issued a statement proclaiming February Black History Month, and announced the appointment of African-American staffer Lynn Stevens to be his Director of Minority Affairs. But Lynn Stevens was ALREADY the Director of Minority Affairs and has been serving in this position for nearly a month. Why this announcement now? Hmmm
  3. Kasich blah blah blah "He was less than enthusiastic about following through on $35 million in state funding for the Cincinnati streetcar. “That’s yet to be determined,” he said in brief news conference afterward." http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20110201/BIZ01/302010020/Kasich-meets-with-business-leaders
  4. CityBeat is the most likely candidate, and they have the loudest non-Enquirer (and non-TV network) voice. Internet-based reporters preach to their choirs, for the most part. Every single one of their leaders has credibility issues. COAST supported the stadium debacle while not supporting the fountain square development. Smitherman thinks the city is trying to taint the water in black communities with syphilis. Etc etc etc...
  5. Wow. They repeat the exact same mistake as they did last time. This message needs to get out to everyone ASAP. It's just another poorly worded initiative
  6. I'm reading the initiative now, can this phrase: "the term “Streetcar System” means a system of passenger vehicles operated on rails constructed primarily in existing public rights of way" be interpreted to include any other forms of rail?
  7. I witnessed Kevin Flynn slam a revolving door at the Hyatt downtown
  8. Bortz is picking the replacement. I'm sure he has a streetcar supporter in mind
  9. I'm starting to really enjoy commenting on these articles. It's a good way to take out my pent up aggression. I urge everyone to go on every single streetcar article and comment (I know it seems hopeless, but it isn't.) Just remember to stay tactful in your attacks. That GeorgeRemus clown is driving me crazy. At least the people reading it can see some of the people the anti-streetcar crowd attracts
  10. This is a great start with the Enquirer!
  11. I hope the silence from the higher ups in this movement means they are working diligently on countering this "opposition". Regardless, sounds like the next city council meeting is gonna be a circus with all the non city Tea Partiers. Hopefully we have a good chunk there as well. Meeting starts at 2 so I would get there around 1:30
  12. Solid point. They need to get the construction contracts signed, sealed and delivered.
  13. Is there anything legally that prevents someone from putting essentially the same ballot initiative twice in a short period of time? I mean they had their chance to word the ballot initiative exactly how they wanted to, they failed, and now they want a redo for the mistake they made? This would be like the Jets wanting a redo against the Steelers because they lost.
  14. Yes, please post! Looks like it's blocked. Seems they're not interested in being transparent and public, but rather secretive and sketchy. I wonder why that is? If people really don't want a streetcar, you think they'd be actively publicizing their groups and events. I don't get why they're being secretive and defensive. The fact they are selective on their social media networks says, to me at least, that they aren't confident in their own arguments. That they know their arguments would not hold up against any rational person from the opposing side so they silence all arguments from the opposing side just in case. They do not want their followers knowing the full truth. It's ironic since they accuse rail supporters of being a cult, yet all information and members from their side is closed off to any arguments that could be a threat to their propaganda. It also shows how willing and desperate they are to "use" their own people for their own agenda.
  15. This is getting to be disastrous. 700wlw is now broadcasting where one can go to sign the COAST petition. Deters just rambled on for an hour about how he hates it and how he's going to city hall with his followers to speak at the next meeting . So many ridiculous and erroneous statements from callers and Deters...Just another blastfest and its literally happened everyday on that station. No objectiveness whatsoever
  16. In somewhat streetcar related news, Smitherman said he's running for mayor in 2013.
  17. I got you covered. http://www.quinnipiac.edu/x1322.xml?ReleaseID=1550 http://cincinnati.com/blogs/politics/2011/01/19/ohioans-back-kasich-killing-passenger-rail-fear-higher-taxes/ "By 48 percent to 42 percent, Ohioans support Kasich’s decision to kill passenger rail between Cincinnati and Ohio’s other major cities, returning $400 million to the federal government;"

We agree yet again! Haha, well played. I see Boehner teared up again - which I don't mind in this situation. But this makes 5 solid public cries since his Election night speech. The O/U for Boehner Tear ups for the year: 20

That is disturbing. Will the papers that endorsed him actually cover this story(Enquirer/Dispatch)?
  20. Lets be honest though. If Cincinnati had those exact same characteristics, COAST, the Enquirer, and 700wlw would still be against it
  21. Exactly. COAST would use the typical Cincinnati arguments "But that's Salt Lake City, it won't work here!" or "Now is not the right time. Maybe later, but not now"

I think its safe to say that the overwhelming majority of people in this thread voted. Strickland was fighting an uphill battle that saw the public perception turn against incumbents. What turned the tide for Kasich was 1) Dispatch, Enquirer, and other major papers endorsing him 2) The anti-incumbent wave 3) Democrats not rallying their base 4) Independents switching to the republican party this election. During this last election, anyone could run and basically say "I'm going to lower taxes, cut spending, and I'm against the health care plan" and they would get sizeable votes from their base. Sharron Angle almost won in Nevada and she was a complete nutcase. In the midterms, historically speaking, the opposite of the President's party usually makes gains(although this one was a historic gain for the republicans). Strickland was relying on some key voting demographics that never turned up to vote. Even with all this against Strickland, he still made it pretty close. Now it really does no good to dwell on the actual election since Kasich won. Now we have to turn our attention to keeping an eye on Kasich and hoping he acts in Ohio's best interests and not his own personal financial interests.

Apparently he caved, Rider, on not allowing news media to witness his swearing-in ceremony. Regardless though, there is a pattern. We'll see how he does, but a 42% negative rating before even taking office is not a good sign
  24. Here we go again: http://cincinnati.com/blogs/opinionati/2011/01/05/lets-have-a-vote-on-the-streetcar/
