http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20110324/NEWS0108/103250338/Amendment-would-prohibit-funds-streetcar?odyssey=tab|topnews|text|FRONTPAGE "This isn't going to be built anytime soon - it's time to admit that and deal with it," state Sen. Shannon Jones, R-Springboro, said of the $128 million-plus streetcar plan. "At a time when resources are so limited, why would you spend public dollars on something that likely isn't going to come to fruition?" Jones' amendment, inserted in the $7 billion, two-year transportation law passed by the Ohio legislature Wednesday, says: "No state or federal funds may be encumbered, transferred or spent pursuant to this or any other appropriations act for the Cincinnati Streetcar Project."

How would it look if Cincinnati state Senator Eric Kearney (D) put an amendment in a transportation bill banning all federal and state money for all highway widening projects in Warren county? The Governor is making everyone fight against everyone. Nothing will ever get done in this kind of environment.

The amendment was add by state Senator Shannon Jones, R-Springboro. Her district does not even cover the city of Cincinnati.

Comments are pouring in. "I'm not a street car supporter and I'm glad to see this thing derailed. BUT, exactly how does the State House pass a law that prohibits a local government from accepting federal dollars as reported in this article? Seems a bit over stepping to me."

Honestly what company would want to expand in this kinda environment. Reduced transportation options, reduced education, reduced prison capacity. My gawd who would bring a family here to face all of that and more?

I can't believe you are questioning that. I guess it's all rural to get from Cincy to Springfield.

So this would be a potential loss of 200 million for the Cincinnati area since the 3cd(100m) was shot down and now this funding(54m) maybe pulled. So they will have to give back the 64 million to the feds as well if this falls through. That's a ton of construction jobs alone lost.

Suburban Sprawl News & Discussion
http://news.discovery.com/tech/high-gas-prices-suburbs-slums-110321.html Americans rarely think much about zoning, but it governs almost every facet of how we live our lives. And unintended consequences of 50-year-old zoning codes may be about to turn some of our loveliest and quietest suburbs into the next slums. Why? Simply because they've been built too far away from everything else, and we won't be able to afford the gasoline it takes to go to and fro. Suburbs: slums of the future? At least, that's the provocative conclusion of Peter Newman, one of the authors of a study released by the Planning Institute of Australia late last year.

Cleveland will regain the lead as far as largest MSA in Ohio. It's looking more and more likely that the new proposed changes to the urbanized area will form 2 large MSA's in Ohio. Counties could be added or subtracted on both. Cleveland-Akron-Canton. MSA: 3,184,862 CSA: 3,286,359 Cincinnati-Dayton-Springfield. MSA: 3,109,986 CSA: 3,245,082 http://www.census.gov/geo/www/ua/fedregv75n163.pdf
