Ohio - From Big State To Little State?
When I was in England I had to give a lady working at the tour bus company my home address so when I told her "Columbus, Ohio" she said can you spell that please, so I started saying "C-O-L-U...." and she said "no, could you please spell Ohio" :-D But she was British so I guess that doesn't count.

Columbus: Italian Village: Jeffrey Park Development
JohnOSU99 replied to Summit Street's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & Constructionlatest news on Jeffrey Place: Early March Construction Update There's a burst of activity on the Jeffrey Place construction site this week. Find out wha't going on. March 9, 2005 posted by Paul Bonneville The first phase of rock crushing of the huge pile of concrete that was sitting at the southern most edge of the site has been completed and the rock crushing equipment has been dismantled and removed for the time being. There is plenty more concrete to be demolished and crushed on the site, but the crusher equipment won't be back for another 6 weeks or so. The concrete that was crushed once covered a large portion of the site as building foundations and parking lots and was demolished and then stored on site in order to be recycled back into Jeffrey Place as gravel for the utility and street infrastructure. But that's enough rock-talk. Attention now moves to the first phase of street and utility construction. The first delivery of concrete sewer connection pipes arrived on the site today and is being staged right next to the large pile of gravel. At the same time, additional heavy-duty digging machinery also arrived on the site today and was assembled for use in building the 1.7 miles of streets and utilities. Hockaden and Associates, the contracter that is doing the surveying for the streets and utility infrastructure in Jeffrey Place, was also staking out the locations of the streets in preparation for the excavation that will occuring in order to install. The first 11 townhomes that are going to be built on Fourth Street will start construction with in a couple of weeks. We are currently in the hands of the city in regards to permitting and anticipate being full-steam-ahead very soon. We choose to get all of our permits out of the way at once rather than going for one permit at a time (this is for the first 11 townhomes only) which in the short run takes a considerly longer amount of time, but in the long run allows up to keep moving continuously and much more efficiently. http://jeffreyplace.com/news/news.cfm

Columbus: Short North Developments and News
JohnOSU99 replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionCondos springing up in the Short North The perfect urban lifestyle March 2005 By Cindy Bent Findlay, ShortNorth.com For an increasing number of young singles, empty nesters and others, living along High Street in the heart of the Short North is becoming a reality. "I’ve been looking for something downtown for five years. I wanted to step out my front door, walk and get somewhere. I have the best location in Columbus now,” says Bruce Henke, an attorney with downtown law firm Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease. Henke is referring to his new 1400-square-foot condo at Parkview, a Long & Wilcox project overlooking Goodale Park at the corner of Park and Poplar. Parkview is just one among many condo projects sprouting along High Street and in surrounding blocks. Some 107 new condominium units ranging from entry-level to luxury pricing plus 64 new rental units will bring a significant amount of foot traffic to the neighborhood over the next few years. Construction is underway from north to south, with new buildings going up and old ones being renovated into new living space. The 160-unit Victorian Gate is “going condo,” converting rentals to owned units. Lahoti Properties is working on various projects that will add up to 79 new condo units by some time in the next two years. And the former Functional Furnishings building is being redeveloped by Plaza Properties into new retail on the ground floor and 14- 450-square-foot condos on the second and third. The Wood Companies is adding its own retail and condo developments expanding further north along High Street, though mainly concentrating on retail development in the buildings, at least at first. That’s not even including the massive new projects underway on the eastern and western boundaries of the neighborhood – the new Harrison Park in Harrison West and the long-awaited Jeffrey Place in Italian Village. Columbus: Downtown Developments and News
I was just checking out 8 on the Square's website today and they've added some video "walk-throughs" It looks like there will be some really good views from the condos as well as some neat features inside the condo tower. On the front page you can view a video of the exterior of the whole project, and then each of the three different floorplans has a video on their respective pages. Check them out if you get a chance! http://www.8onthesquare.com/

Ohio's Signature Foods
About Reynoldsburg and the tomato: Tomato Festival The idea for the Tomato Festival came about at the dedication of the plaque recognizing Alexander W. Livingston for his contribution to the further development of the edible tomato and declaring Reynoldsburg the birthplace of the commercial tomato. I'd never even heard of perogies until a roommate of mine in college brought some home (he grew up in Westlake).

Cleveland: Bob Stark Warehouse District Project
I like people who think big! I'm tired of people going full throtle in the suburbs, but wuss out on urban areas because it's "risky". You need a grand vision to make a grand city. Keep us updated on his plans!

Very exciting for such an overlooked place. Wonder if Springfield's prime location between Dayton and Columbus will ever bring positive economic/population changes like those seen in Warren and Butler counties.

Cleveland: Downtown: The Beacon
This project still confuses me.....is the tower portion of the project being built soon, or is it something that may happen in the distant future? Height wise, how does the proposed tower compare to the Federal Courthouse tower? (that's the lastest skyscraper in CLE right?)

Columbus: Brewery District Developments and News
January 5, 2005 Liberty Place Apartments Under Construction Long-awaited construction of Liberty Place Apartments is underway. The 300-until complex is being built basically at the corner of Liberty and Short streets west of the Worly Building. The southern phase will be completed this year and the northern phase will follow. “This is outstanding news and it’s good to see that the design is appropriate to the neighborhood,” said Jim Tinker, Brewery District Association director. “The savvy residents of Liberty Place will enhance the neighborhood and find an authentic, upscale urban district at their doorstep.” Literally at their doorstep will be Cameron Mitchell’s Columbus Brewing Company Restaurant at 525 Short St., two blocks south of Miranova. Within walking distance are other restaurants, taverns, a drycleaner, coffee shops and wireless internet access. The project is being led by Winther Investments Inc. of Houston. The luxury apartments will provide a range of amenities and allow pets as does Brewer’s Yard Apartments at 100 Frankfort St., which is 96 percent occupied. “It’s fantastic to see high-quality residential development at both ends of the Brewery District,” Tinker said. http://www.brewerydistrict.org/dev/home_flash.asp

JohnOSU99 replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionWednesday, February 02, 2005 The Yukon Studio Lofts Latest breaking news...the former Functional Furnishings building on High Street just north of Union Station Place has a new lease on life: Yukon Studio Lofts. Plaza Properties has purchased the property and will be developing 28, 450 square foot studio lofts, on the 2nd and 3rd floor of the building (14 each floor) and leaving 100 square feet of retail space on ground floor. I'll be very curious to see the floor plans when they become available. http://columbusretrometro.typepad.com/

Columbus: Short North Developments and News
JohnOSU99 replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionAccording to the Columbus RetroMetro website, there are currently 9 residential projects going on in the Short North right now....not too shabby. The I-670 cap was built to reconnect the Short North with downtown in an effort to get convention goers to shop in the Short North, maybe the bigger benefit will be the vibrancy of the Short North mingling with the energy from the Arena District/Vine St./North Market area to create yet another desirable area to live in. I just hope they go big with the Arena Park Place condo tower!

Columbus: Downtown: Franklin County Government Center Projects
I like the fact that the commissioners are "thinking big" with this project. Even though it won't make an impact on the skyline, it has the potential of making a profound statement at streetlevel. At first I was pissed when they said the new building won't be as many stories on the parking lot site as it would have been if built on the park site, but I think the biggest problem facing downtown right now is too many surface parking lots distrupting the urban "energy", so a building with a larger footprint is exactly what we needed at this point in time.

Columbus: Short North Developments and News
JohnOSU99 replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionMore Short North Development For Immediate Release 28 January 2005 Two major redevelopment projects in the Short North Arts District will add retail and residential space to the evolving urban historic neighborhood. The soon to be redeveloped Winders Motor Sales Company and Sofa Express Buildings are located at 777 and 849 North High Streets. Occupancy of the 777 N. High Street project, featuring a 50 car parking lot, will begin in the summer of 2005. Mark Wood, Wood Cos. vice president, said “Our development, which should be some of the most exciting retail space in the Short North, and re-development of the ‘Sofa Express’ site one half block north of our building, will transform over 280 linear feet of High Street frontage from boarded up and vacant storefronts into a new hub of retail, restaurant and residential activity,” said Wood. Lahoti Properties plans to construct 45 condominiums at the “Sofa Express” building at 849 North High Street, with retail storefronts on the first floor. Lahoti recently completed construction of retail storefronts and 20 condominiums located at 765-771 North High Street, and have seven condominiums under construction along Buttles Avenue facing Goodale Park. The Wood Companies redeveloped the building at 937-951 N. High into five new storefronts in 2003. Businesses include the North Star Café, Emack & Bolio’s ice cream parlor/coffee shop, Sherrie Hawk’s new gallery “Sherrie Gallery,” Kiaca Gallery featuring African Contemporary art and the Jazz Art’s Group’s offices. The Wood Companies’ “Winders Motor Sales Company” building at 777 N. High Street will result in over 12,000 square feet of new retail and restaurant space. It will include unique second-floor lofted retail space and 18-foot-high glass windows, developed in character with the building’s historic 1924 architecture. More than 170 new residential units will add to the foot traffic and energy along High Street over the next few years. The Wood Companies’ “Mona Lisa” building at 33 Warren Street, which is currently under construction, will feature seven town-home condominiums. The “Mona Lisa” development, reflecting the demand for upscale city living, will feature floods of natural light including a wall of glass overlooking a rear patio, plus front and rear balconies, fireplaces and attached garages. For more information, please contact Mark Wood at (614) 298-9663. www.WoodCompanies.com http://columbusretrometro.typepad.com/columbus_retrometro/

Riverside: National Museum of the USAF
I can never keep the whole "Harsman Rd/Woodman Dr./Needmore Ave. thing straight. I lived in Riverside most of my life and never heard of Harshmanville....that's interesting. That whole area behind the former DAP plant is a dump (houses included) so tear 'em down! (I know, I know, if I lived back there I'd be pissed). Some of those homes look like old military housing (ranch style townhomes). I'm trying to remember if there is one really nice big house back there.....maybe it's further down Woodman/Harshman towards S.R. 4 and Eastwood Lake....but I seem to remember a nice, older home on the right with a top-floor patio/observation deck.

Riverside: National Museum of the USAF
That's a shame considering Riverside is one of the largest suburbs of Dayton. The problem with Riverside is the lack of industry and retail. Most of Riverside's land use is residential....maybe they should tear down all that crap at the corner of Airway and Harshman Rd. and build a real "downtown" (small scale commercial area with street-front facades and parking in the back). It's hard to think of Riverside as a city since it doesn't have a real "core", but I guess that's because it's always been just a township.

Columbus: OSU / University Area Developments and News
JohnOSU99 replied to CMH_Downtown's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionWhen I came to Ohio State in 1994 south campus was still happening. I would have spent more time down there if I'd known it would be the last year before Campus Parteners got started. We used to go to Maxwell's, Mean Mr. Mustards, Sloopys (Ski Club!), B.K. Flyers, Coed's, The Pit (Edge), Jailhouse, notal's (ah $.25 Natty Lights), etc without being harrassed about underage drinking. Before CP the cops seemed to turn a blind eye to that kind of stuff as long as you weren't out of control.
