Dayton: "Downtown's just fine."
Man, this thread is hard to find! Finally found it by searching for "just". Here's another DDN article (nothing new). Future of downtown Dayton looks bright, planning director reports Vitality of downtown will be based on 'jobs, amenities and housing,' John Gower says. By James Cummings Staff Writer DAYTON — Downtown Dayton is never going to be the retail and commercial center it once was, city Planning Director John Gower says. http://www.daytondailynews.com/localnews/content/localnews/daily/0513downtown2.html

Giving Directions
Nice work, RiverViewer! Only story I can tell is of my saddest direction-giving opportunity. While about on one of my photo excursions here in Madison, I had stopped to write out a birthday card for my mom and drop it in a mailbox, when a couple driving stopped and asked if I knew where some restaurant or other was. Unfortunately I didn't and told them so, but when I looked it up later, it turned out the restaurant was right around the corner from where we were! D'oh! I would like another chance. Navigating the Isthmus can be somewhat of a pain due to opposing one-ways and disconnected streets, something you may have noticed, RV. So maybe one day it can give me the test to become a Certified Directions Master. It's no Mt. Adams, but it might do.

Metro Dayton: Road & Highway News
Very interesting. Thanks for the research! As a map guy, I'm fascinated by those through traffic diagrams.

Cincinnati: Random Development and News
I think I like the sound of Feces Cottage or some such better than The Debut for the model name. Apparently more accurate than the latter, but still classier than The Shithouse.

MayDay's thread (and your post in it, BHG) reminded me that I never responded to this one. Very nice!

MayDay's Vacation Pics - Part 3 (Phoenix - 40ish pics)
Biltmore- very cool! Good stuff, MayDay. How was the weather in Phoenix? I was there once in early March and it was 95ish, and the weather and news critters on TV were going on about how hot it was outside, as if this were not the place where the summer temperature is 8 million degrees! Sure, it was unseasonably warm, but it hardly seemed hot by Phoenix standards!

I'm sorry but if that happens you'll need to find some other way to be uncool. This forum is for geeks! :-D

Well I suppose it is obvious from the posts I have made here, but for official confirmation: I'm in, and my sister (occasional lurker LaMichelle, post count 3) will be coming along too.

MayDay's Vacation Pics - Part 1 (30 Pics)
^ It does look like it... although you have to keep in mind that "just dirt" is the natural state in Phoenix, like grass in the Midwest. (But still empty lots, of course!)

Yay! Aerials!

Northern Illinois University; May 2006 (PART TWO)
Well done. That view out your room with just the farms is weird... for some reason the idea of a college bordering right on the edge of town like that seems strange to me.

Nice! I like that castle one best.

Very nice! I recognize some of those, but a lot are new to me!

Cincinnati: Brent Spence Bridge
I think that's just referring to the maps with the aerial photo base (as in moonloop's photos). That's the topic of my thesis... check back in a year or so and I'll tell you whether they're a good kind of map or not.

Dayton: A Quick Tour
Very nice! Dayton looks great in those shots. Last time I saw it was in the less lively winter. Those 'hoods that ColDay mentioned must look very nice in this season. Hmmm... I may have to pay a visit when I'm home in a couple weeks.

General Roads & Highway Discussion (History, etc)
That's my favorite! People should have lots of fun with that when they come to visit the new mall. Looks like you've covered most of the changes at the Montgomery/Greene line. Only one in Beavercreek I see missing from your list is Linden Ave > Dayton-Xenia Rd.

Sprawl in parts of Ohio..1976-1992
Interesting maps. They look less sprawly than these kinds of sprawl maps usually look, but that may be because they don't include the 1990s as you pointed out. The map says it's based on 30x30 meter squares, so some of the smaller things should have been picked up, but it looks like this particular publication of it is not presented at that full resolution, so we probably are missing some things here.

Ohio's Discount Stores
I must be too young... I don't know those Dayton stores. Either that or it was my high-class upbringing. :-D (I need some kind of snob smiley to use here!) P.S. Welcome to the forum, Mike! It's good to see the Dayton contingent here slowly growing.

I believe they can be no bigger than 100x100 pixels, for one thing... perhaps you're still not making them quite small enough?
