  1. Sorry, I didn't get any Newark shots. And we didn't get to the Ironbound either. :-( My sister and I only got the very brief mini-tour of Newark as we walked with our cousin from Newark Penn Station to her apartment by the R-N campus. We'd spent a short day in New York (I do have pictures of that :-)), but she had to get back home for something and there was not really any time for pictures. Maybe next time we can get a tour. My cousin seems to really like being in Newark. I haven't heard much from her about the R-N campus in particular, but since there haven't been any complaints I guess she must like it well enough. The little bit of Newark I've seen doesn't seem as awful as the stereotypes would have you believe. It's not in great shape, but it seems all right to me.
  2. This site is like crack to me as well, but I'm glad I was otherwise occupied today and avoided any withdrawal suffering! By the way, does the upgrade include more crack than before, less, or the same amount? The new look is good, except for the white on gray text that moonloop mentioned.
  3. mrnyc, I was in Newark a bit today with my cousin ("she", not "he", BTW ), and I mentioned that I'd seen your pictures of the Ironbound, and her comment on the place was "bangin' food." So I guess you were spot on with the eating comment!

Great thread idea! I look forward to seeing more of these steps.

Should I? All I know how to find is the 2000 census number, which is 23%. But I can look for more recent stuff.
  6. Yeah, Boston's skyline is not the most attractive. But it looks nice at night, when you see the lights instead of the buildings.
  7. Cool, thanks for showing. I've seen that building on the outside many times, but have never been inside.
  8. 55% General American English 35% Yankee 10% Dixie 0% Midwestern 0% Upper Midwestern It's soda, dammit! "Pop" is the probably single worst thing about Ohio. (On this board, Monte and I may be alone in this conviction.) I think "pop" is the only thing giving some of you guys the 5% Midwestern score. I wonder what else you have to say in order to speak Midwestern.
  9. The skyline pictures are from just across the Charles River along Memorial Drive in Cambridge, in front of MIT. I rather like the foggy version better, too. It's an interesting effect and was pretty cool to see in person as well.
  10. Only a few from the past several days. On a foggy evening, the Prudential Center gets lost in the clouds. A little earlier, I took a few pictures around Harvard Square in Cambridge. The accursed camera shake strikes! And the finale panoramas! The first at Harvard Square. Click on it for the full size. Skyline in the fog. Again, click on it. Attempted a couple of days later, for a non-fog version.

Maybe in metropolitan areas we should operate like New England, where counties are meaningless. Within metros, especially where there is significant population in more than one county, I think county government can get in the way.

Do not malign the Key, for the Key sees all and will strike you down.
  13. Nice! Newark pictures seem to be a rarity. I don't know Newark well, but my cousin goes to school at Rutgers-Newark. Where is this hood in relation to that? (Of course, Newark is so tiny that nothing could be very far away.)
  14. Fantastic! Please tell me where you get that first shot from (a classic ColDayMan view). I tried to find it once, and the only spots I could see would have been in people's back yards.
  15. Yeah, too bad it's not very clear. Nice find, though!

That picture is Madison. (It's one I posted recently in the winter pictures thread.)

I'm a desktop neat freak... I hate having lots of icons there. Everyone's only downloading legal things with Limewire, right?  (By the way, I also have it. Just no desktop shortcut, nor is it generally running.)
  23. The way I'd do it with your example (getting from 2400 x 1720 to 1600 x 1200): Resize it to a height of 1200, which gives you 1674 x 1200. Then, either resize the canvas to 1600 x 1200, or paste the image to a new one of that size. Adjust the lateral position as desired, since there's a bit of room to decide which parts get cut off. Looks like everyone's got their own slightly different way of doing it.
