Cute town! Thanks for the photos.

Some really nice stuff there! Never been to Canton; thanks for the tour!

So, how does anybody get off a train that crowded? It seems like it would be impossible to get to the door, unless everybody spilled out again.
  4. Wonderful photos! So did you set up a supervillain operation in the distillery? (Gilbey's was our terrible gin of choice in my grad school office, by the way.)
  5. The much cooler images from the ISS (or other space missions) are those at oblique angles, which is what I'd hoped this was going to be. Those are the views you don't get to see from anywhere else. This stuff from directly overhead is just the same as aerial photos in Google Maps or elsewhere, which several above have noted. Not that it isn't interesting, of course! Just not as novel as other images from space.

Fascinating! Biggest boo to the tower next to LeVeque (like everyone else said) and the Franklinton plan... but then, is actual Franklinton looking any better than 1960s urban renewal dream Franklinton? Honest question, really; I've never taken a good look and maps only get me so far.

Boston, yesterday. I enjoyed the angle, which aligned three different bridges that aren't really in line with one another. Plus a train and some boats for good measure. Later there was a plane in this view, and presumably cars on the bridge (odd that this shot didn't catch any, in fact), and if only a train had been crossing at the time, it would have been quite a collection of transportation modes in one photo!

I enjoy the use of a logo/seal-ish image on some manhole covers in Madison. I think these started appearing last year or so, and I always forgot to take a picture of one until a return visit last weekend.

About the parking meter in my place: it's a parking meter from downtown Dayton. Apparently somebody is/was selling the old meters after Dayton installed new high tech ones. It was given to me as a gift. Yeah, when rent time comes around, I remind myself, "at least I don't live in New York!" (And I mean that only in terms of cost, of course.)

^ Good question. Maybe it pre-dates the kitchen. The best part is that because bathroom light switches are generally outside the bathroom in buildings around here, and because the new refrigerator is apparently bigger than whatever used to be there, you have to open the freezer door in order to get at the switch for the bathroom.

Actually, the kitchen is pretty huge (considerably more space out of frame), but what you see there is all the counter space there is! I've supplemented it with a thing on wheels, but it's still not much. So, lots of walking around room, but little food preparation room. The stove in that picture was about to be removed and replaced with a brand spanking new one. (I do cook a bit.) This place was vacant and undergoing an overhaul for a year before I moved in, but apparently they thought I was coming a week later than I did, so there were still a few things left on the list at first.

To play along with this thread (maybe not for the first time, but it's probably been several years)... I am currently paying through the nose for the second floor apartment of the house on the right, in Cambridge MA: Although the building is not in the greatest shape (and squirrels get into the walls), it's actually very nice inside and perfectly spacious for someone like me who works from home and spends lots of time there. Sure costs a lot more than I got used to in Wisconsin the past few years, though. A couple of interior shots from shortly after I moved in last fall, messy and undecorated of course:

I am 26 years old, life is a breeze and always has been, and in a decade or two I'll be bitching about how easy the kids have it.
  14. ^ Should have grabbed a shot of that. It is indeed now a little park of sorts. From what I gather, the street pattern has changed, too, so that Main Street no longer runs directly into Mass Ave, and that space (directly behind me in that view) is a little plaza with benches and tables. I have been told that Toscanini’s is the best ice cream around. You agree? Haven't made it there yet.
  15. This thread is dedicated to MTS. It's getting to be walkin' around weather, so more photos. Central Square, about halfway between Harvard and MIT, is one of the main business districts of Cambridge and is the most downtown-ish. It has been sort of run down in recent history but is right in the middle of a gentrifying phase. It's a mix of all kinds of restaurants, somewhat trendy bars and music venues, and everyday businesses, and it remains well stocked with inebriated homeless people. A few of the shots at the beginning and end of this set are roughly in the vicinity of Central Square, but not necessarily what you would refer to as being in Central. Typical residential street in this half of Cambridge, with requisite triple deckers. This looked fancy. Harvard Street, looking in the opposite direction from Harvard. Fire! On Mass Ave, in the zone between Harvard and Central, but closer to Central territory. Old photos show a lot more of this kind of signage around. This is an okay bar, decorated with Soviet propaganda. I'm led to believe that it's an MIT hangout. Sorry for the Pepsi truck; there was so much truck traffic that day! City Hall Mass Ave back in the direction of Harvard Toward Central Square proper. Somehow every main street in Cambridge seems to aim for the Hancock tower across the river. Mass Ave and Prospect St. This intersection, basically, is Central Square. Red Line subway entrance there on the sidewalk. By the way, I think someone in another thread mentioned that Central station is designed the same as the subway stations in Cincinnati are/would have been. Churchtastic, but looking into the sun. This place isn't quite my replacement for the Mediterranean Cafe in Madison WI, but I like it. Awesome tiny building; I'm told it used to be some imitation White Castle. The Middle East, as I understand it, enjoys some fame as a music venue. Looking back toward central Central Square. Central Square fringes. This street takes you to Kendall Square and biotech country. Back the way I came. Entering the adjacent Cambridgeport neighborhood. The flash seems to have fired here because my camera is an idiot. Sames Farther into the neighborhood, random residential scene. Last one
  16. Nice! Hooray for random photos!
  17. ^ I've seen movies there a couple of times, but never really paid much attention to the surroundings. I do recall thinking it looked a bit grand, though, so perhaps there is some good stuff you'd like. I'll definitely try to remember to bring a camera next time.
  18. I do Facebook most, but these days usually just to look at what other people are up to, rather than posting/doing anything myself. Signed up for LinkedIn, but don't use it for anything other than to maintain a few contacts. I do use Twitter, but for no particular reason. When you first sign up for Twitter, you think it's stupid and pointless, and that's because there's no reason to use it if you don't have some critical mass of friends attached to you. But once you get those people, then it's just the same as Facebook status updates (which can be good/fun or really really stupid) without the rest of Facebook. I just occasionally write something that's on my mind and avoid the super mundane "at the grocery store" sort of thing. It's pretty useless for actual communication between parties, but it can be useful for receiving updates, links, announcements, etc. from some entity of interest.
  19. I don't have a shot of that. Next time I've got the camera over there, I guess.
  20. You know I only post these threads to make your blood boil!

I know! I guess we were colonized by only the boring Europeans.
  22. As long as I'm here posting stuff this morning, I'll post some photos of the Harvard Square area. Though Harvard Square itself is of course an actual single point, the name in many contexts applies to a mini-neighborhood surrounding that. I live sort of on the fringe of that area (actually right across the street from some Harvard housing, but a little separated from Harvard Square territory). The majority of these are from a week or two ago, but a few up front are from several years ago and January of this year. Panorama for some reason. Click if you want to see a bigger one. From Harvard Yard, I believe Snow! Okay, now the recent pictures. Out of Town News has been a Harvard Square fixture for many years, providing, as the name indicates, news publications from all over the place. Recently, to everyone's dismay, the company owning it decided not to renew its lease, and it seemed that it would close. It ended up being rescued by another company, but still, it was another harbinger of doom for newspapers in general. It's currently in the former headhouse for the Harvard Square subway stop, which was vacated following the station's redesign during an extension of the Red Line in the 80s. Cambridge Common, where George Washington first assembled troops during the Revolutionary War. I forget what this is, but I think its picture was on the city parking permit stickers this or last year. Note the wires for trolley buses. As far as I know, a few bus routes coming from Harvard station are the only places in the Boston area where old streetcar lines have survived in the form of trolley buses. Crate & Barrel moved out a couple of months ago. I like the question mark. This plaza faces Brattle Square, but Brattle Square being all of a single block away from Harvard Square, it's easy to never know that there is such a place name. Students, tourists, and yuppies. Except possibly the guy in the lower right. The Garage is a small-ish indoor retail building that I believe is in fact a former parking garage. Some actual bits of Harvard. A couple of blocks down Mass Ave. Mt. Auburn Street. I enjoy this tower a lot. Bow Street Back on Mass Ave, this is about the east/southeast edge of what I would consider the Harvard Square "neighborhood." That's it. Next time, perhaps another of Cambridge's squares?
  23. Looks quite nice! Go Dragons, though.

Took a brief trip to Montreal over the weekend. Despite walking something like 15 miles on Friday, I mostly only took pictures in the old city. Here are some of those. Basilique Notre-Dame Stayed at this hotel Inside the basilica. And one more from the outside.
  25. Fascinating! Didn't know about this place; thanks for the photos!
