Ohio Smoking Ban
Say what? Maybe you should have looked that one up, too, as long as you were looking up men's breast cancer death rates. Delusion is pretending that second-hand smoke is harmless. Even discounting as overstated the 3,000 lung cancer and 35,000 heart disease deaths that the CDC (or whoever compiled their numbers) attributes to second-hand smoke, it's not a non-existent problem. Hell, even 3,000 is only a thousandth of one percent of Americans; just because you're not dead doesn't mean a few people aren't. People die from all kinds of things that we take for granted. It doesn't have to be made imaginary to justify not personally worrying about it.

Ohio Smoking Ban
^ A lot of the ads like that make me want to slap people. Actually it's more those "Truth" ads, which I can't say I've seen in a while. Their "blame big tobacco" attitude irritates me.

Butler County Growth
I came across these Liberty Twp. land use maps that made me want to vomit. Existing land use in 1999: And proposed land use. (Don't know the date of the plan.) Look at all that orange! :-o

Cincinnati Skyloop... WTF?
Why have those little cars when they could just suck people directly into various tubes like on Futurama?

Ohio Smoking Ban
I just think owners ought to have at least some right to make the decision for themselves.

Ohio Smoking Ban
I would very much like to go to smoke-free establishments and would probably enjoy the effects of a smoking ban, but I won't support a smoking ban. However, I could go for some sort of compromise like the NY law mentioned above.

The amusing thing about downtown Fairborn is that Foy's seems to occupy half of it.

Licking County: Developments and News
PigBoy replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionAbout 90 percent of Licking County voters prefer to redevelop urban land rather than develop farmland as the population grows in the next 25 years, a recent poll said. Yet probably 75% of them, if placed in a situation where they had to choose, would move into the newly-built subdivision on farmland rather than into the redeveloped urban land.

Halloween Eve in Fairborn
Can't have Halloween in Fairborn without Foy's! Great thread--it's about time someone posted some Fairborn pictures. Better clean that smudge off camera lens, though.

Ohio Congressional Redistricting / Gerrymandering
Oh, and my opinion: I think they all kind of suck. (Especially the insane, snaking districts used as the boogeyman by the issue's foes, but I trust that realistically those would not be implemented, given that there are obviously multiple solutions.)

Ohio Congressional Redistricting / Gerrymandering
At last, the Dayton Daily News has some of the maps produced by RON and by the opponents. They have other info as well, including the scoring of these maps. http://www.daytondailynews.com/opinion/content/opinion/issue4.html That page is not especially clear on what's what, but I'll present what I think these things are. First, the current congressional districts. Incidentally, the 6th district is considered "competitive" in the RON scoring. The 2nd, 4th, 5th, 11th, and 18th are "unbalanced uncompetitive." (Although I'd think the recent election in the 2nd might change the picture a bit.) This one is a map produced by RON. It scores a 22. I believe the next two are from the opposing group(s) I am not really sure what this is supposed to represent. The DDN had "middle ground" as the filename. I guess maybe the point is that normal-looking districts don't score as well as weird ones.

Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) Projects & News
Don't these things usually have "ramp metered when flashing" signs at the beginning of the ramp? Of course, those could be easier to miss or ignore than an actual traffic light, especially if you're not used to them. I think that people would follow the signals, assuming they see them, because people are generally obedient when it comes to traffic lights (most people stop for a red light even when there's nobody around, after all). I'd bet that the more likely thing would be for people to ignore the "one car per green" rule. They have some of these things in Madison, as mentioned in the original article. I've never seen them in action, though, as I've avoided driving through them at the "right" time of day. I'm amazed at the volume of highway traffic this place has, given that it is a small city. I guess it's at least partly due to the geography of the city, which forces everybody to take one of only two or three paths to get through town, around the lakes.

Cincinnati: Downtown: Convention Center / Hotel
Yay, an easily-Photoshopped picture! Lowercase T: Still looks a bit off to me, I guess because of the proportions of the letters, although I think I prefer slightly over the original. Uppercase I's and A (something I was thinking of): I like this a bit better, except 1) the N's can't be uppercase when they're only three panels wide, and 2)like most all-caps text, it's harder to read.

Cincinnati: Downtown: Convention Center / Hotel
The letters are a bit odd. It would be nice if they had used a more attractive "font", as it were.

The Great Cincinnati Conservatism Thread
While it's not right to say white=Republican and black=Democrat, the latter is a lot closer to the truth than the former. A higher proportion of African-Americans in the city is probably going to mean more Dem votes, but as Jeff said, that may only be part of the story.
