  1. I don't remember airplanes in Dayton. Must not have been paying attention... My home 'burb of Beavercreek is currently doing this kind of thing with--you guessed it--giant beavers. (They look ridiculous, by the way.) There are 25 of them in honor of the city's 25th anniversary of incorporation. They've encountered a few problems so far: 1) They are fiberglass and not insanely heavy, so... 2) They are relatively easy to remove, and... 3) They make good centerpieces for college parties. Two have been stolen (and recovered) so far. They've now all been equipped with GPS devices.
  2. ^ One thing I worry about with the local governments is that certain metropolitan core counties and cities, in addition to their own residents, receive an influx of workers, etc. from the outside to whom they provide services. Tying these places' spending to their own population growth doesn't seem a good idea.
  3. I forgot about those bats! But I never did see many of them. So nobody else has any pig pictures? Maybe this was before we all had digital cameras or scanners...
  4. Let us go back to a magical time known as the year 2000. The world had failed to end due to a computer glitch, we would soon find ourselves arguing over things called "chads" in a place called "Florida," and most importantly, decorated pigs were on display around greater Cincinnati. I have pictures of a few of these pigs. Anyone else who has pictures, please post them here! Yeah, I know pictures of all the pigs are available on the internet, but personal photos are more fun. "Periodic Pig" "Pig Appeal" "Pig-Tac-Toe" My favorite, of course: "Pig Boy"! (I did not name myself after this pig; the nickname predates this.) By the way, the crowd there was for Oktoberfest. "Porkhos" "Paddle Squealer" "Orange Barrow, the Road Hog" "Uperse Igpe, the Pig Latin Pig" Never could recall this one's name...
  5. Yes. Now be quiet while we ridicule you for being different. :-D

Wow, that projection is a lot higher than that of the state's Office of Strategic Research, which projected 338,350 for the year 2030--that's 140,000 less and seven years later than this projection!
  7. ^That is odd... maybe it was just done by whoever made the map. "Hmmn an empty spot... needs some trees!"
  8. It's beginning at the Dayton Mall... Dayton Mall retrofit starts to take shape Open-air pedestrian-friendly concept has ground breaking ceremony By Stephanie Irwin Dayton Daily News MIAMI TWP., Montgomery County | Shoppers navigating the ripped-up asphalt and temporary dead-ends in the Dayton Mall's parking lot along Ohio 725 know that lifestyle-center retailers are on their way. What they don't know is exactly how this "walkable community" will look and feel, and who those retailers might be. But a concept site plan from Glimcher Realty Trust, the Columbus-based owner of the mall, lists 19 retailers and four restaurants for its $19 million retrofit of the 1970s-era indoor mall. ...
  9. There has been a bit of discussion on the proposal in a thread somewhere around here... I think the article was posted by someone. Anyway, I look forward to seeing your pictures, etc.!
  10. Let me guess how this logic will go: "The Bible says that groups X and Y fought a battle at location Z in Israel. Archaeologists and historians have shown this to be true. Therefore, everything in the Bible must be literal history. QED." (Though I suppose I really shouldn't make accusations without seeing what the contents of this museum actually end up being...) Also, I'm not sure this article is helping things with its definition of "creationism" at the end. I'd hazard that many people who might call themselves creationists would not agree with every single one of those points it lists.
  11. WTF??
  12. From the 7/14 DDN Experts warn vacant properties endanger region By Joanne Huist Smith and Jaclyn Giovis Dayton Daily News DAYTON | When Joann Smith lounges on the porch of her home on Paul Laurence Dunbar Street, she often sits with her back to the road. This helps her to avoid the view of five dilapidated, vacant houses that blight her otherwise tidy neighborhood. "Sometimes we see raccoons running out of the houses. Windows are broken. That means somebody is crawling in there at night." Smith said. "I'd rather walk out my door and see a vacant lot than look at this crap across my street. I love sitting on my porch ... but sometimes I just get disgusted and think, 'Why don't I just move?' " Read More..
  13. I don't know much about it myself, but from what I gather some of the rail experts around here might tell you that there are a host of problems with trying to get commuter service running on tracks that are being used by freight trains. (And I don't know if those are the tracks you're talking about, either.)

    Very nice!
  15. Great pictures... glad you could see some different views from the usual! NO SKI!
  16. Forgive me if I'm not excited. There must be a zillion groups out there advocating the same kinds of things, and all that ever seems to get done is a lot of complaining. On the other hand, at least this group has a fairly specific goal... it's a start, perhaps.

I think if the situation comes up, I'll tell people they might have heard of Dayton as the place where those Bosnian peace accords were made. That should make it sound important. :-)
  18. Best Dayton thread ever! Excellent work; I'll look forward to the next installments!

Don't look at it that way! Arguably some of the Wright Brothers' most important work occurred here, though granted it was not the famous work. Remember that the Flyer they flew in 1903 in North Carolina was a pretty useless machine, and it was here that they developed and flew the first practical airplane. But that's still not a good way to explain Ohio to outsiders. I'm not sure what you could say, either. I guess I'd just give a description of where the state is and what's in it without worrying about whether it really distinguishes Ohio from any place else. After all, most states are not particularly remarkable, at least to people who haven't been to them.
  20. Yup, I certainly knew that. The Tim Hortons web site only recently put store locations on there... I'd always wondered what kind of incursion it has made into the U.S. and was finally able to find out a few months ago. The great majority of locations in Ohio are around Columbus, with Dayton coming in second place. Looks like the closest one to Cincinnati is in Monroe.
  21. Being in the vicinity today, I had to walk over to this and take a look because I was just not understanding it from the pictures posted here. After seeing it in person, I still don't understand it.
  22. A few more in the Dayton area... Bellbrook has a "center" that is an intersection, though it's almost totally separated from the modern city (the above post about Mariemont reminded me) The following are largely guesses based on aerial photos: Miamisburg- main street West Carrollton- main street(?) Centerville- intersection Riverside- not much, but probably intersection Englewood- intersection (MAYBE... I'm fairly uncertain about this one) Huber Heights- I'm thinkin' "nothing" Vandalia- I am undecided at the moment, but it's under consideration :-) I got to thinking about Kettering and Beavercreek as I described them previously, and based on some logic which I won't detail here, I decided that maybe as long as Kettering can be called an intersection city, Beavercreek can be too. So if it matters, maybe Beavercreek=intersection. The places that elude classification, like Cincinnati, should just be called "main squintersection".

I guess the other images must not be available in the free version. If it's important enough, the upgrade to the next level is $20 for a year, and presumably that allows you to access the other database.
