This is the least crappy picture of myself I could find (I'm on the left). That's my dad (with his crazy hat) and I hiding some ammo in the woods in preparation for the coming revolution. Wait... I've said too much. I meant to say that we found a Geocache. Yeah, that's it... I know nothing of any revolution. Nothing.

What's wrong with the AAA maps? Other than a very few mislabeled streets, I've never noticed a problem. AAA is also great when your roommate is learning to drive on your car and gets it stuck in the mud.

Nice pictures... my impression of Portsmouth was that it looked kinda sad, at least in the area near the floodwall/murals. By the way, just out of curiosity what are the 8 remaining county seats that have yet to be blessed by a Summit Street photo tour?
  5. I'll chime in now, since this was brought back up... I will graduate next May with a BA in Geography from Ohio Wesleyan University. Then I will go on to a Maters program, but I'm not sure exactly where yet- I'm starting on the extremely annoying application process now. Then two years after that, I guess it's on to the real world doing somethingorother.

  7. ^ I was wondering the same thing. It wouldn't cost me more than $15 in gas unless that goes higher than $2/gallon. What's the rest- parking for a long time or something?
  8. Wow, super-duper cool!!!
  9. Yeah, too bad there isn't an actual downtown 6 miles away or anything...

Looks pretty nice. Everyone and their brother around here seems to have a 5/3 skyscraper.

    1. Very nice! 2. Congratulations!
  12. Is there any kind of map of this somewhere? I'm finding myself totally unable to follow what the article is talking about.
  13. This seems to be a weekly occurrence... I get bored and take pictures, then post them here. This weekend it was (part of) downtown Cincy. I'll spare you a lot of the 100 or so pictures. Here's what remains. Parked on Main Street (mine's the second car back) Parking Parking Parking Oooooooh..... shiny Requisite Carew Tower shot... More reflectivity... Don't walk! Hello, Mr. Lincoln Fourth Street yet again Almost sunset... makes for nice colors I believe I'll walk across the bridge! Yup, walk across it. Hooray for fossil fuels! I could smell that Friday's down there from the bridge. Made it to the other side. ...and headed back. Ran out of memory here. And finally, these days I don't walk away from Cincinnati without a pano or three. -----------> I'd also like to point out how cool I thought it was to see people that actually looked like quasi-tourists walking around. I saw a number of people who were holding some sort of pamphlet-type of guide, and at least one group of people I can be sure were visitors, since I was asked for restaurant advice. (I don't know why I would look like I'd know anything, since I'm the one who is walking around and taking pictures of everything like a tourist.) Maybe it's the Ohio low self-esteem, but I did not expect to see tourist types, so I was pleasantly surprised. While I did seem to have certain streets all to myself (Broadway for a time was eerily devoid of all life, including traffic), seeing a fair amount of activity downtown on a Saturday made me happy. But I hadn't been here in a while, so maybe my expectations were too low.
  14. There's also another water tower in northern Beavercreek that has "Fairborn" painted on it. Beavercreek should go out and start painting giant beavers on everyone else's water towers!
  15. Interesting... I thought an article in the Dayton Daily News on the weekend said the Beavercreek school board had already decided not to finance it. Maybe it said something different, or this article got the comments from the school board guy before that. On a somewhat related note- I'd been watching over the summer as a water tower at the corner of Indian Ripple Rd/Stroop Rd/Dorothy Ln/County Line Rd (both the roads conveniently change names at the intersection), where this thing is to be built, undergoing some new painting. A couple months ago it was finally revealed what had been painted on it: the Montgomery County logo. Guess which county the water tower is in! (Hint: not Montgomery) :???:

My county (Greene) is interesting. Percentage-wise, the results are very close to the presidential race- 62% to 38% in favor of Issue 1, 61% to 39% for Bush over Kerry. I wonder how closely those two correlate among the voters. That's different from the state as a whole, where the number of "yes" voters obviously exceeded the number of Bush voters. In Greene County there were actually fewer voters in total on Issue 1; fewer "yes" votes than Bush votes, and fewer "no" votes than Kerry votes. Anyway, it's not a margin I like to see, but at least it's not among the worst of them on the list.
  17. What about neighborhoods for the big cities? As for non-serious reponses, census tracts reminded me that I have a shapefile of all the census blocks in Ohio (65,000 or so). I was going to suggest using that, but I looked at it and it turns out that it's only centroid points, not the actual boundaries. Now that I think about it, that's probably what I used to make population density maps of Ohio, which I believe I posted here at some point.

  19. This isn't exactly an exciting suggestion, but I'd like to see a few maps showing locations of neighborhoods, landmarks, or whatever. I'm often looking at all the great photos on this site but not knowing where things are unless I happen to be personally familiar with them. I want to know where everything is, dag nab it! I guess that's why I study geography, though...
  20. Ah, jolly good. For some reason stopping on the side of the road hadn't crossed my mind.
  21. Splendid! Where did you take the third pic from?
  22. Yes, you did miss it: National Museum of the United States Air Force
  23. I don't think there is really any new information here, but this July/August newsletter has a little paragraph about that project, along with a not-so-great copy of a drawing of it (3rd page): http://www.riverside.oh.us/pdfs/newsletter_jul-aug_04.pdf
  24. Interesting... I had heard of "Tech Town" but I didn't realize it referred to a specific project. I thought it was just some grand idea of making Dayton an overall high-tech city. Learn something new every day, I guess. As for relevant information, I obviously have none.
