  1. Yeah I drive by that on my way to work every day, they are flying through deconstruction. There seems to be some asbestos removal, but as soon as they finish that they get a few building gone in a week or so. Pretty amazing. Anybody have any idea if they have a recycle program for all the materials. The green tile on these buildings would have been sweet to get a hold of.
  2. I doubt it that won't be happening for at least a couple of years.
  3. Between this and the dog park meeting last night, I'm super excited about the neighborhood I live in. The dog park meeting had quite a few people show up and they're going to start researching sites. They mentioned the Herman park site but it is small and also mentioned working it into a huge redesign of Michale Zone Rec. They said the work on ZOne Rec will start in 2010, and the plan was quite amazing. They mentioned that they could probably get an acre dog park worked into the plan. These two were only example sites and a commitee is going to research any other possibilites... which could be many.
  4. Yeah I really don't think this is the best use for this space. The thing that is interesting is he mentions MMPI and the medical mart. It's encouraging, however far-fetched, that the medical mart could really be a catalyst for other far reaching concepts, and I guess this is one.
  5. Wow that's a heck of a lot of good news in one article. Somebody at the pd must have let it slip through.
  6. Way to go doc broc on standing up to the naysers on cleveland.com. Even if you get absolutely nothing through to them it sure is nice to just state some facts so other readers might catch them. Kudos
  7. I believe they have a "ground breaking" for the street widening this week actually. It might be Wednesday if my memory serves correct.
  8. I am not a fan of his work, but after his talk at the Intercontinental Hotel with Peter B. Lewis, I am a fan of him as a person. He is actually totally down to earth and shuns the term "starchitect".
  9. Yeah true they are not the most intriguing designs but they are college dorms. They are built for functionality. Not to say we shouldn't want more but it's not going to happen for basically a rental unit that students beat the crap out of. I just think it's great that there is, what seem like, a lot of brick on them. In this day and age of rising construction costs these are not exactly cheap buildings. We could be looking at all vinyl siding or cmu block exteriors, than we could really start crying.
  10. I'm going to play devil's advocate. I think that if they have a cheaper site that that is what they have to go with. At this point, with the fiasco in county govt., and the tax being as unpopular as it is, if they have to really stretch the tax to a higher amount or double it's length people are going to go nuts and there could be a good chance the project doesn't happen. Also this is a real opportunity for the designer of this project. I know that in terms of the site it is going to be hard to get a functionally perfect CC, but some of the most ingenious and architecturally stimulating projects come from difficult sites. I'm the last to say let's wait and see what the plans are and than judge it than, but maybe this could turn out better than we could expect.
  11. Why does it seem that Cleveland rolls over on these lists? Just in this list Youngstown, and Dayton are outraged by this, while it seems we embrace it as a way to make suburbanites say I'm glad I left. Just like with Cincinnatti challenging the census numbers why is our local government or Visitors bureau not fighting against this crap?
  12. I think that every study under the sun states that this would be a great idea for the lake. There is enough wind, we have the industrial and manufacturing base to produce the parts, and it would be great for the economy. What the hell is the hold up? My understanding is that they are doing another study, does anybody know why this hasn't moved forward, or if there are plans in the work to build something not just study it?
  13. It was interesting that the article said that the center city survival would be won or lost in the next few years. It's strange that 35 years later it's much the same story in Cleveland. The projects they talked about Gateway and Tower City being somewhat of a silver bullet and hopefully turning the city around. While they helped it's unfortunate we can't be looking back at this article and saying great job Cleveland for making that turn. Well here's to the next 35 years and still keeping hope alive.

By accident I happened to flip past WTAM and caught big mouth Triv, dumping on the city again. He made some comment about how nobody with any intelligence would live in Cleveland. He mentioned that no matter how much money they put into Euclid Corridor Project and the buildings they are renovating nobody will move down there unless we can get crime under control. I've read all the comments upstream and agree for the most part that this guy is a total moron. But I think if you could get this guy to come have a beer or a great meal downtown or in one of the neighborhoods that he might change his mind. Somebody upstream said that he jumps on the bandwagon and from what I've heard of his drivel this is true. This guy doesn't have a mind of his own he just repeats crap that he hears at the local VFW. I know this may seem like a waste to try to convince this guy but he really does have a lot of power because of his use of the airwaves. This being said I'd like to "waste my time" with an email campaign to enlighten this guy about the greatness of this City. If there are any intelligent Clevelanders (ha ha) on this board please right me a quick bio and why you love the city so much and I'm going to forward these to him, both via email and snail mail. I'm also going to include a lot of stuff off of these forums if that's OK with the mod's, mostly the projects that are going on and not anybody's direct quotes. Also if it's possible to upload this some where on this forum this might be something that people could forward to anybody that might need a good dose of "I Love Cleveland". In advance thanks to anybody who might send me something, I hope that many people will take a few minutes and who knows what might happen.
  15. Just as a general heads up on a couple of projects. They are building a performing arts center of some sort on Lorain across from St. Ignatius, I beleive for the school. It's actually quite a large project for not having seen it anywhere in these forums. Demo has been going on on 41st and Lorain for the future offices of an architect, can't remember the name right now. Two buildings are being demoed and one rehabbed. One house is gone and the other one is almost gone. The rehab construction has started at Bridge and Fulton for the future home of another architecture firm, KB2 something or another. Also over the last year there have been quite a few storefront renovations on Lorain, between 41st and 65th, does anybody know if there is some sort of masterplanning exercise that might have been executed to pull Lorain together? I know that this is part of that antiques district but not sure if this has anything to do with it. If I get a chance I'll take pics this weekend and post them.
  16. So apparently you need to be a suburb to get the Plain Dealer to dote on you. Oops is this the wrong thread to bash the P.D.?
  17. I don't know if anybody saw it, but on "Ask This Old House" they helped a homeowner in the Buckeye neighborhood. This isn't such a big deal, but they did a little Cleveland Rocks vignette to introduce the clip. It was actually really cool to see them talking up Cleveland. I don't think in all the episodes I've seen that they said anything about the place that they were going to visit, but this was like a 30 second clip with footage of the Plumbing contractor visiting Cleveland landmarks.... including my fav Steve's Lunch. Why does it seem that place gets so much press?
  18. Can sombody put the Crains Article up about this.... Graphics firm draws up HQ plans Consolidated Graphics Group Inc. is eyeing a site on the lakefront owned by Cleveland Public Power for a new, $20 million headquarters. Thanks,
  19. Sorry about that I should have known better to post something from their bloggers...
  20. Did anybody else see this post from Clevleand.com? Can anybody confirm or deny some of this stuff? I am talking about purchasing one of the units. It 's about time we had some true luxury downtown. I've looked for a long time for a residence to fit my needs. Here is what I've learned from inside sources: 1. A few blocks in the flats will be gated. Use will be for residents and guests only. This will solve the crime problems. I wish the gated area would stretch further, but it's a start. 2. Trader Joe's closing at Crocker Park and moving to the flats 3. There will be an exclusive marina 4. All residents will get Browns season tickets 5. Five or six new high-end bars going in 6. Microsoft to take some offices in the flats 7. New private park along the river for residents only All in all, cook stuff! Comeback city. I don't like the idea of all the private stuff but really Microsoft and Trader Joe's that's good news.
  21. I guess if it's on Steve Litt's Blog it's o.k. to let the cat out of the bag on this project. http://blog.cleveland.com/architecture/2008/04/sleek_new_townhouses_proposed.html#more
  22. Man has anybody seen the LUXE banners up. Looks really chic.really livens up the interaction with the street. Also you can see all the work going on and it looks like it's really starting to take shape. I drove down the detroit strip last night and had a feeling of being back in Seattle. I know I know get a camera and take some pictures. Also Stonemad has got to be on the verge it looks awesome through the windows. He's going to have to charge ten bucks a beer to make up for his costs.
  23. I heard from a little birdy that Marlan Kaplans new restaurant should be opening in the "Bank Building" (on detroit next to the new shops) within a month or so. I had no idea that this was actually progressing but apparently they've been working on it since they passed the liquor license issue.

It seems like Cleveland was doing o.k. until this last week. At least three murders this past week, maybe one or two besides that. I hope Frank's initiative to get the guns off the street brings the number down from last year.
  25. Wasn't really sure to stick it but I'm sure somebody might be able to find a better place for it. Great news here. German solar company plans HQ in Cleveland Posted by John Funk November 19, 2007 14:36PM Categories: Breaking News, Energy, Impact Germany's oldest solar power company has committed to establishing its U.S. headquarters in Cleveland. IBC Solar AG, with $700 million in sales this year in Europe, wants to begin assembling solar panels here. "I have decided to make Cleveland the U.S. headquarters for IBC," Udo Mohrstedt, chairman and CEO, wrote in a Nov. 5 letter to Cleveland Foundation president Ronn Richard, who released the document this morning during a meeting with Ohio lawmakers. Germany is the world leader in solar installations, though it has only about 70 percent of the sunlight Cleveland receives. A solar manufacturing industry in Ohio would create thousands of jobs, advocates say. ... http://blog.cleveland.com/business/2007/11/german_solar_company_plans_hq.html
