  1. Grew up on the east side, Euclid to be specific, went to Kent for under grad, and Grad school in Cleveland and moved to D.S. almost four years ago with my bride. Love the neighborhood and it just keeps getting better.
  2. Yeah I beleive Robert Maschke had designed a couple of houses for that site. One was for the artist Hector Vega, but I don't know if that is still the case. Another thing that I heard thrown around seems to be taking place. At the corner of Franklin and 65th, at the old Rite Aid, they seem to be doing quite a bit of demo the last couple of days. Not sure if they are tearing the whole building down and building new or just selective demo. I heard that the Cleveland Clinic was going to open up some sort of medical offices at this corner. Anybody heard anything concrete? At least the construction or deconstruction has started.
  3. I beleive it's supposed to be a wine bar. Whatever that entails.
  4. I think this is from yesterdays meeting... Looks good to me. Let me know if anybody reads this differently. Ord. No. 1420-07 By Council Members Zone, Pierce Scott, Sweeney (by departmental request) Authorizing the Director of Economic Development to enter into contract with the Detroit Shoreway Community Development Organization, to provide development assistance to partially finance the renovation of the Capitol Theatre located at 1400 West 65th Street, and certain other costs necessary to redevelop the property. Estimated Cost: $1,500,000 Remarks By Director Of Economic Development Department: See Legislation. PASSAGE RECOMMENDED BY COMMITTEE ON COMMUNITY AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT.
  5. Anybody have any idea on when we would know if they got the required signatures? My guess is it would take at least the weekend to just count them, let alone find out if all the signatures are legit. Is this going to be another Broward County dimpled chad event?
  6. Somehow I would imagine somebody thought about that when they chose the type of glazing to reduce glare and heat gain and loss. At least you would hope.
  7. Why would the IX center be expanding by 400,000 sf if it is going to close in the near future. Check out today's Crains article for the news.
  8. Is there any way us Detroit Shoreway residents could campaign or send an email somebodys way to say, "hey we would love if you located in our neighborhood". It would seem to me if people that live in the neighborhood say that it would mean more than the neighborhood development corp. saying it.
  9. A while back, I believe last November we (residents of the specific ward this is in) had to vote on giving a liquor license to a new restaurant on the south side of detroit right in the old Perry's Family Restaurant space. As far as I knew if he got this license he was going to proceed immediatly with the construction. This was to be kind of a mid-high end bistro type of place. The owner was the owner of One Walnut downtown (marlan kaplan?). It looked really great and they even were going to use the alley to the East as an outdoor patio. I beleive that the vote passed and that he was able to get the liquor license. I'm wondering if anybody knows anything about this.
  10. Am I missing something or reading this wrong... where the heck is the RT. 2 bridge, isn't it North of the Detroit/Superior bridge?
  11. It's amazing all the naysaying that was going on about this episode before it even came out, and how it could only be bad. This seems to be way too typical of us C-towners and Ohio residents. I thought the show was funny, light hearted and really a positive portrayal of Cleveland. It would be nice if all of us could see Cleveland in the same light as was "portrayed" in the show. Go Cleveland
  12. Actually I think the masters program has about ten or twelve students per year, so there are at least 20 students there, plus professors and the other individuals that work for the CUDC
  13. And what is this website address?
  14. Where did you get the number eight, I had heard six.
  15. Just as a quick add on to projects in this neighborhood. Some may have been talked about already. There is a new art gallery, and a graphic design firm moving into open spaces on south side of Detroit west of 65th. There is an issue on the ballot for residents of Precinct I(very small area between 58th and 65th and bridge and Detroit) to approve a liquor license for a new restaurant next to Maschke Architects. Should be a very cool restaurant if approved. By the chef that is at Walnut One downtown. There is a new wine bar opening up north of Detroit on 65th called Toast. There is a new pub called "stone Mad" that is currently under construction north of Detroit on 65th. It will be an Irish pub/restaurant with boccie ball. It is by the owner of the Tree House in tremont. He has invested nearly two million dollars in this pub. It is on the west side of 65th, it is pretty cool looking. And Matt Zone has secured over 2 million dollars in a streetscape makeover for next year which includes burying electric lines, widening sidewalks for outdoor seating and cafe areas, and other various art related add ons (not sure the exact details). Also, down the way, pipe dream sort of, is to renew the capital theater into a three screen indie movie theater, akin to the Cedar Lee. I was in this space last weekend, it is amazing, falling apart but amazing. Supposedly they do have some funding and this project will happen, but it seemed to me like it would be down the line. This is the theater in the Gordon Square Arcade. Lastly is the Near West Theater moving to behind Lou's Furniture, better known as the lofts shown above. I believe this will happen next year. Most of these are underway or will be soon. I live in this hood, I'm very excited about things to come, including Battery Park and the new bakery.
  16. Yeah, that was great, he got rid of some hookers. This is murder we are talking about, a lot of murders. He needs to get his tail out here and do something, something very big, and very vocal, and all over the news. I sent him an email, or at least to his task force, and whoever responded asked if I could give specific details about the events. I was like are you kidding me, a cop, two artists, a local deli owner and about five other people have been killed. You don't know about this? Come on, open up the PD or turn on the news. Every two seconds it's West side murder, west side killings, west side robberies. Though so far I haven't seen a front page, first couple minutes of the news, story about the 1200 new homes and 1/2 million square feet of new retail/office space on the WEST bank of the flats coming, privately funded none the less.
