Cincinnati: Downtown: The Banks
TAside from mass transit, one very easy cure for parking is to build garages instead of surface lots. You can triple capacity by building a garage and they are not THAT expensive. they are also much more apealing to the eye than surface lots. Thats just my 2 cents.

Is Montgomery a good place to live?
Thx for all the responses. how does Glendale compare to Montgomery? More expensive? More exciting? Sin't Tony Snow from Glendale?

Is Montgomery a good place to live?
thinking of fnally relocating to the Cincy area and Montgomery is a big possibility. Anyone shed light on how it is living there? I have only seen the main strip which seems charming. Are the neighborhoods nice? Nice houses? Anything would be great.

Cincinnati: Fountain Square: Development and News
LesterLyles replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & ConstructionThat is typical italian. You go to France and try and get into a restaurant after closing hours and they'll make fun of you. You go to Italy, and they'll do everything they can to serve you, even if it means preparing something cold from the fridge. I am so looking forward to this place. Nothing better than authentic Italian food and Pietoso knows what he is doing.

OT- what cameras do you guys use.
wel guys, thax for all the input. After a ton of research, I decided aginst the SLr b/c I just know myself that I won't like lugging it around. I am getting the Canon g9, which based on reviews seems to be one of the best point and shoots on the amrket and is a great size. I figure if I really get into many of the features (this thing is loaded) I can upgrade to an slr in the future.

A question for you World Subway historians....
kjp, thats certainly part of it but you can't compare DC's to Paris. It is 1/5 of the size and 100 years newer.

A question for you World Subway historians....
why are the subway systems in Paris and London nicer than the NY system. I can understand some smaller and newer sytem being nicer but Paris' and London's are all from the same time period (older actually) and are similar in size (London's is bigger, I believe). Just curious of there are any tangible reasons.

OT- what cameras do you guys use.
Monte, I was waiting for your reply b/c I am such a fan of your photos. The D80 is a bit over my budget. Is there a reason you prefer Nikon over Canon, lets say? Most people say I can't go wrong either way b/w the D40x versus he Canon rebel Xti but I am looking for any words of wisodom before I invest the money. Why did you chose Nikon? And thx for all the responses.

Cincinnati: Fountain Square: Development and News
LesterLyles replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & ConstructionI can't get over how good the square looks. Just thinking back to 5 years ago and seeing those pics from 1987, you can see the dramatic improvement. While I realize the cost was high, the square is symbolic of Cincy and therefore I think the investment was necessary and this was/is money well spent. The movie idea was great. Bengals away games will be great as well...could be a lot of fun.

Cincinnati: Downtown: The Banks
I can't believe these issues are still being discussed. The handling of this project has been absolute joke!!!!

OT- what cameras do you guys use.
Thx guys, Rando, I'm thinking of the Canon rebel Xti. I would buy the body only and than purchase a nice lens ( ihead the kit lens is weak). i was also considering the Nikon D40 but I like that the Canon has a auto dust cleaner.

OT- what cameras do you guys use.
Maybe this is the wrong forum for this but I admire your guys work so much. I assume you use SLRs...has dust ever been an issue?

Cincinnati: Downtown: Queen City Square
completely agree w/ Atlas. I always felt one of the reasons that Europrean cities were so vibrant and livable is b/c they don't have such a concentration of commercial businnes in one area w or few buildings. They have widespread commercial areas and a nice density to their cities.. Instead of 1 mega tower, how about four or 5 seven story buildings, either new or rennovated? To me it mamkes a lot more sense. Unfortunately, this has never been the American way.

Underground Parking Suggestion (Cincy)
but in an effort to get rid of surface lots in CBD, whether its the many lots on Central Pkway, the vast lot at Broadway Commons (hopefully a park would be built there), is there anyway to uise the underground tunnels as parking. Seee my very rough graphic below. H's reprsent cars and the arrows represent the direction of traffic in the roads underground. Underground parking is the way to go in urban areas and w/ thee tunnels already built, Cincy could make it happen at a lower cost. _______________________________________l l____________ H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H H --> --> --> --> --> --> --> ------------------------------------------------------------ <-- <-- <-- <--- <--- <--- <-- <-- _________________________________________________________

Cincinnati: West End: The Gateway Park District (Union Terminal)
What hapened to your city is what happened to many American cities. Progress in the form of destruction. It really is a shame b/c had such destruction not occured in our cities, I think many American cities would compare very favorbaly to Europe's in terms of charm, archetecture etc etc. Oh well. What's done is done and at this point, we can try our best to learn from our mistakes.

Cincinnati: Urban Grocery Stores
River. Quimbob posted this: "I remember Kroger wanting to build one on Central Parkway right near their offices. They couldn't buy the real estate." I simply found this hard to believe that they couldn't fuind the realestate. It seems Central Parkway has way too many vacant lots for ealestate to be scarce. As for my hope for a Cdentral Parkway grocer, I just think it would be a pefect location. The key will be tohave a grocery on the streetcar lineso people can get ther w/o a car i.e. they can just hop on the streetcar if they live a few blocks away.

Cincinnati: Urban Grocery Stores
I think a trader Joes r Whole Foods would be perfect on Central Parkway. Would attract the OTR and CBD crowds. I would also be on the path of future Light rail. I find it hard to believe Kroger could acquireland on Central parkway to build a store. How about one of the several surface lots there.

Cincinnati: Downtown: 84.51°
THere are 3 basic things downtown needs and for the life of me I can't figure out why they don't exist. A bookstore, a grocer and a sushi place. I have already poined out a grocery would be perfect on Cetral Pkway b/c it would serve both CBD and OTR and it would be on the streetcar route. As for a Borders type bookstore and a sushi palce, the ground floor of an apt building on 5th and Race would be perfect. I don't think it has to be a 20 or 30 story tower. I think an 8 to 10 story building would be perfect and have no trouble filling up given that location.

Over-the-Rhine: Central Parkway, Broadway Commons
agree that the global conection stuff is not seen all the time and I'm not just saying that b/c it was my idea. Cincy has a ton of positives but international presence/flavo isn't one of them ( at least compared to ther cities0> Things are improving and this would only help matters. As for filling in the parking lot surfaces on Central "Boulevard", I think the downtwon grocery would be perfect i.e. a higher end Kroegers type store which would attract both OTR and CBD residents.
