  4. Downtown 'streetscape' estimate tops $2.5 million Findlay Courier, 3/6/07 The estimated cost for the first phase of the village's downtown "streetscape" project has increased $50,000 to more than $2.5 million, according to Dave Koontz, project manager with CTI Environmental, Uniontown, the engineering/consulting firm for the effort. The village has secured $2.135 million in Roadside Enhancement Program funds (federal money funneled through the state) for the first phase of the work. The village will pay for the remainder of the project. During the initial phase, improvements will be made to Findlay Street and to the intersection of South Vance and Worrello streets, including infrastructure, waterline replacement and burying other utilities. Similar work will be done on Vance Street, but additional funds will have to be sought from Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) and other sources to cover the more than $1 million necessary to complete the second phase of the work.

I'm not sure if this article from National Geographic entitled Orlando Beyond Disney: The Theme-Parking, Megachurching, Franchising, Exurbing, McMansioning of America has been posted or not (it really could be applicable in so many different discussions on here). The article is all about Orlando and Disney World, but I found it very interesting and so much of it relates to the general sprawl discussion. It's a pretty long article, so I won't post the entire thing here, but here is the link... http://www7.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/0703/feature4/index.html Being stuck in traffic gives you time to think; I wind up thinking about how different Orlando's image of itself is from reality. The irony of Orlando is that people go there in search of Disneyesque tranquillity—and by doing so, they've unleashed upon the place all the rootless, restless contradictions of America. Here is big city traffic, big city crime, yet people in Orlando cherish the idea that they have escaped the trials people face in other cities. On this morning, it is cold, so cold I turn the car heater to high—though at most times of year it is stultifyingly hot. Ahead of me is an overpass, and just to complete the refutation of Orlando's all-American self-image, a big semi lunges across the overpass. "Lucky Noodles," giant red characters proclaim, both in English and Chinese; it is carrying supplies for Orlando's Asian supermarkets.
  9. No surprise. The full report is available here.... Building 26 not eligible for National Register listing The University of Dayton will not restore Building 26, following a study by ASC Group Inc. that finds the heavily altered building has lost its historical integrity and is ineligible for the National Register of Historic Places. The decision paves the way for remediation of 11 acres of land fronting the Great Miami River, part of a $2.54 million grant secured through the state's Clean Ohio Revitalization Fund program.

  11. If I"m not mistaken, in addition to the property tax structure that Rob mentioned, Pittsburgh also has a 50% parking tax.

I completely agree, Brewmaster. I was going to suggest something like this, so I looked into so options for creating an online "action center". I wasn't really able to find much except for this that can be used to automatically send customizable letters to your Senators, Congressmen, and local newspapers. Here's an example of one. Obviously this particular system isn't something that could be used for local issues, but I would love to see some sort of action center like this for Urban Ohio.
  13. Citirama at University of Dayton Renovate 5 existing houses and build 5 new houses. The 5 existing houses are 1511, 1515, 1519 Frericks and the duplex at 238/240 Stonemill. The 5 new houses will be built as a single building in a townhouse manner at 317- 325 Stonemill across from the Marianist Community House. This is a collaborative project between UD and the Home Builders Association of Dayton and the Miami Valley. The renovated and new construction houses will be showcased in a late summer event tentatively titled "Citirama at University of Dayton". One goal of this event is to showcase the revitalized South Campus neighborhood as well as the new campus Masterplan.
  14. That's good enough for me. The City of Dayton has reported been in talks with Greyhound about relocating them by the airport, so why not talk to Megabus and see what they have to say about a stop right off I-70.
  15. Why would Dayton be on the way...I would imagine they will shoot straight down I-71 thus bypassing Dayton. Its a much quicker route, and has to be cheaper to operate. I believe he was refering to the Columbus - Indy - Chicago route, not the Columbus - Cincy - Indy - Chicago route
  16. Apartments proposed for NCR lot Four-story building could serve as UD housing. Parking garage also planned. By Joanne Huist Smith Staff Writer Wednesday, March 07, 2007 DAYTON — A Boston developer wants to transform a 4.26-acre parking lot owned by NCR into an apartment complex and a parking garage. The Dayton Plan Board on Tuesday recommended approval of the Trammell Crow Co.'s request to rezone land at the southeast corner of River Park Drive and Old River Drive from business park (warehousing and light industry) to eclectic neighborhood commercial, which permits multi-family housing. "We do believe there is a good market for nice, new residential in the area," said Richard W. Dickason, vice president of Trammell. Trammell's proposal includes a four-story building just east of the Marriott Hotel on Patterson Boulevard with a 374-space garage at the rear of the complex. Amenities would include a health club, pool, business center and theater. City Planner Tony Kroeger said the plan board ruled on the rezoning request Tuesday and that Trammell must come back with more details for a major site review. 17. Nope, I can't say that they are. Good luck to the Raiders. But what does UD stand to gain from bringing back the Gem City Jam?
  18. Here is a sketch of the previously announced University Shoppes IV. The left half will be Moe's Southwest Grill, the next storefront is still for lease, and the storefront on the right will be Subway. Although Brown Street doesn't really need another sub place, I'll still take it.
  19. It looks like much of the brush and undergrowth has been cleared out from the woods that surrounds Duncarrick. Also, the exterior of the building is now lit up at night...maybe it was before, but if it was, it wasn't really visible.

  21. Although I'm not surprised by that article, I am glad to hear that the independent restaurant owners are working together to create a marketing campaign. And it also seems like they have the right idea by emphasizing the food and service, but the questions is....do the masses care enough about that?
  22. I've been waiting for an announcement on this property at 675 and Col. Glenn Highway because the Miller-Valentine signs went up on the property not too long ago. I wonder how much MV paid for that property. Development planned for 130 acres near base March 2, 2007 by Yvonne Teems Miller-Valentine Group is planning to build a 130-acre mixed-use development near Interstate 675 and Col. Glenn Highway next to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The project is expected to include office, residential, retail and hospitality space. The office park alone could house up to 4,000 jobs. Officials connected to the project said they don't have a final price tag. But the total cost could reach more than $150 million, said Mark Fornes, principal and managing partner with Mark Fornes Realty. The development is planned for the southwest corner of the intersection of the two highways and near Wright-Patt's Area B. It is expected to house businesses that will support aerospace medicine and sensors units slated to move to the base as a result of the 2005 BRAC process, said Jason Woodard, developer for Miller-Valentine. 23. Here is the full article.... CityWide to hire private developer for Genesis Dayton Business Journal - March 2, 2007 by Yvonne Teems DBJ Staff Reporter A new residential development will be part of the second phase of the Genesis project, which focuses on the redevelopment of the neighborhood surrounding the University of Dayton and Miami Valley Hospital. CityWide Development Corp., along with Genesis partners the city of Dayton, the university and the hospital, sent a request for proposals to developers Feb. 19 to develop the second phase. It will include an estimated 22 single-family homes and one, 12-unit multi-family building on Rubicon Road, Ashley Street and Frank Street. This is the first time in Genesis' seven-year history that CityWide is commissioning a private developer to take on a project. The move shows that the neighborhood can sustain itself and attract the investment of private companies without much government support, said Buddy LaChance, CityWide's director of neighborhood development. The total project cost will range between $3.5 million and $5 million, since developers have much leeway when deciding what type and how many homes will be built on the properties, LaChance said.
