Valero looks at ‘alternatives’ for Lima refinery BY TIM RAUSCH - Feb. 2, 2007 LIMA — It has held the names BP, Clark, Premcor and Valero. The Lima oil refinery could have yet another owner’s name if Valero pushes through with a possible sale. As predicted by an oil industry newsletter, Valero made its intentions known Thursday during its fourth-quarter earnings call. Valero Energy’s chief executive announced that Deutsche Bank was hired to help explore “strategic alternatives” for the Lima refinery, which include sale. Other alternatives for Lima include alliances and joint ventures with crude producers, explained corporate spokeswoman Mary Rose Brown. “However, it is important to note that no decision has yet been made,” Brown said. “You can be assured that we will keep your best interests as a top priority as we consider all options. We are confident that we can develop a strategic opportunity that will be better for the employees, the shareholders and the community than our current approach.” When Valero merged with Premcor in 2005, Premcor and EnCana were studying a joint venture that would have pumped $1 billion into the Lima refinery. Valero bought Premcor for $8 billion and concluded the joint venture wouldn’t work. MORE: http://www.limaohio.com

Dayton: University of Dayton / University Park: Development and News
Just a couple of little things going on along Brown Street... Although I don't think there has been any official announcement, it looks like UD is going to be opening a gift shop in the University Place development along Brown Street.... http://www.nameudstore.com/ So far, this and Arby's have committed to University Place. And the University of Dayton Residential Properties department will be moving to the College Park Center (old NCR building), so that should free up their building on Brown Street (between the University Shoppes and the Second Time Around building) for possible commercial development.

Moving to Cincinnati, need some help!
I don't have any specific places to recommend, but I did get a pretty decent deal when I lived in O'Bryonville... It was easy to get to UC and I was close to most of friends who lived in either the UC area or Hyde Park/Oakley.

Ohio Smoking Ban
I have to go with "I was against the ban before, but now I'm glad it passed." As a smoker, I was totally against the smoking ban, but the ban has actually gave me the push I needed to quit. Although it has only been about 3 weeks since my last cigarette, past attempts at quitting usually would already be a lost cause at the 3 week mark becuase of drunken nights out at smoke-filled bars. Now the temptation to have a smoke isn't nearly as great when I go out.

Great stuff! Do you have any idea what the Odd Fellows Hall is used for? If anyone would know this, I figure you might. I think I looked on the door once and it basically said keep out and no, the building is not for sale.....or something to that extent.

Lima: Random Development and News
Valero sale -- rumor or inside information? BY TIM RAUSCH - Jan. 22, 2007 LIMA — The publisher of an oil industry newsletter said today that he expects Valero to announce that it is selling the Lima refinery sometime in the next two weeks. Tom Kloza, news publisher at New Jersey-based Oil Price Information Service, said he has sources in the mergers and acquisition business who told him Valero “quietly shopped” the Lima Refinery during the last few months. Valero officials continue to say nothing on the rumored sale offering. “As a matter of policy, we cannot comment on rumors,” said corporate communications director Mary Rose Brown. Kloza said he expects Valero to announce soon that it is putting out the for sale sign, either before or during the company’s Feb. 1 earnings report. Valero acquired the Lima Refinery in 2005 when it bought Premcor. FULL ARTICLE: http://www.limaohio.com/story.php?IDnum=34434

I was told that a digital camera is considered a portable electronic device and therefore cannot be used below 10,000 feet. Is this correct or just BS?

Dayton: General Business & Economic News
It would be interesting to find out exactly why the employment rate is going down, even with the large job losses. Declining population? People unemployed so long they they drop off the unemployment numbers? Early retirement/buyouts? Also, I wonder why the DDN chose to base the list on raw numbers. To me, it seems like percentage change would paint a more complete picture. But then Dayton might not have been as high, so they wouldn't have had as sensational story.

I found this interesting...I wonder if they are referring to all level of jobs (for example, I wouldn't be surprised if a secretary or a position like that chose not to relocate) Nonetheless, it does sound like good news that some of the high level researchers are choosing to relocate.
