Dayton: Random Development and News
I think there were bids on all the rest, but some were lower than the minimum or something like that. There's an article on the Springfield News-Sun, but I don't feel like registering.

Dayton: Random Development and News
No one bid on South High School at today's auction. Now the school district is free to negotiate and sell it rather than auction it off. It sounds like the Turner Foundation is still considering purchasing it for Catholic Central.

Sycamore Township: Kenwood Towne Centre
The Greene They also have a location at Polaris in Columbus and have locations in Indianapolis and Fort Wayne, so it looks like they have been focusing on expanding in the midwest, so a Cincinnati store would not surprise me.

Dayton: Festivals, Music Concerts, & Events
Dayton Public Schools will be holding an open house before they tear down the old Roosevelt High School. I am unsure on the date, but I believe it may be November 26. If I find out for sure, I'll post it here...but so far, I have been unsuccessful on finding out details. It looks like demolition will start taking place in the spring.

Miscellaneous Ohio Political News
Rashad Young, who has been serving as interim city manager since Dinneen left (and was Assistant City Manager before that), has been named Dayton's new city manager. The national search was a complete disaster, they said no to the older, more experienced assistant city manager Stan Early, asked to interview retired Kettering city manager Steve Husemann at the end of the process, but in the end they went with the riskier choice of Rashad Young. I, for one, am very happy with the decision and think that Rashad is the right man for the job. For once it is nice for someone with youth, enthusiasm, local knowledge and experience in such a position.

Changing the Greater Dayton RTA's downtown hub system
Does anyone have any information about the RTA possibly eliminating/significantly reducing the use the trolley busses??? I thought that consultants have continually told the RTA it is best to keep the system and it would be stupid for any city that has the infrastructure already in place to eliminate it. So needless to say I was surprised when the city commission briefly mentioned sponsoring a resolution saying that the city opposes any elimination of trolley busses by the RTA. I haven't heard anything about this, but I have been busy lately and haven't been following the news too closely. The city commission was unanimous in their opposition and mentioned various reasons such as the $6 million dollars received annually from the government for the operation of the trolleys, them being a relatively unique thing to Dayton, and being more efficient. Like I said, I haven't heard anything about this and I hope that I'm not mischaracterizing what was said at the commission meeting. So if anyone as heard anything, I would love to hear it.

2006 Results by Geograpy?
Sadly, it looks like the county where I grew up--Mercer--has the unfortunate distinction of being the most conservative county in the state with with over 60% of voters supporting DeWine and Blackwell. :(

Ohio Education / School Funding Discussion
The DDN's endorsement mentioned it a little bit, but it didn't really go into it. Gunlock (the developer who builds all the area Wal-Marts) was appointed to the seat and is now seeking election. One of his supporters wrote this about him, which although doesn't address the issue, it does makes me wonder.... "Currently he serves on the Governor's Council of Faith-Based Initiatives. Tom is very active in his local church, serving as deacon and trustee." In the DDN endorsement, they wrote this "He also pledges to work against the cultural and religious battles that have divided the board"--whatever that is supposed to mean. I'm surprised that the Dayton Daily News didn't endorse Dr. Uphoff (but I don't really know too much about this race either) http://www.daytondailynews.com/o/content/oh/story/opinions/editorial/2006/10/20/ddn102006anagnostourec.html http://www.daytondailynews.com/o/content/oh/story/opinions/editorial/2006/10/20/ddn102006gunlockxxer.html

Dayton: Random Development and News
Agreed, Ink. Also, Springfield Schools may not have wanted to use one of the existing high schools so there was no favoritism to one school over the other--even though the new HS is being build on the grounds of North, maybe they figure it will at least be new to everyone. People always seem to get all worked up over consolidations. Anyway, hopefully Catholic Central will be able to get it--it would sure has hell look a lot better than their current building--and South would then be able to continue to be used as a school--and not one of those fly by night charter schools. There is a great article that I read for one of my classes that talked about renovation of schools vs. building new. It basically said that most states really choose arbitrary numbers when determining when renovation is too expensive. Also, they went into the placement of schools...with old schools more centrally located and new schools often located on the outskirts of town and all that stuff. I'll have to try to dig that up. But like you said Ink, it's a shame that Springfield Schools and OSFC couldn't have worked something out with South High School.

Ohio Donut Shops
I second Bill's Donuts in Centerville Also, growing up, I was always a fan of Charlie's Pastry Shop in Celina, but it's been quite awhile since I've been there...so I don't remember if I really like the donuts or if it's more a nostalgic things, as they have been around forever.

Coffee Maker
My brother has one of these and swears by the thing. But you're not kidding about the loud grinder. I was sleeping on the couch in the living room in my brothers apartment, which is adjacent to the kitchen and the thing definitely woke me up. I thought my brother was whipping up a frozen margarita at 7:30 in the morning.

I don't think any Ohio stations carry them, but plenty of Eastern Indiana stations do, so it's not hard to pick up in Western Ohio.

Centre City redevelopment moves forward Dayton Business Journal - 5:07 PM EDT Thursday The city of Dayton will hold a public hearing Friday, Oct. 20 at 2 p.m. regarding an application for Clean Ohio funding that would go toward the Centre City building redevelopment project. Hutchins Commercial Realty, which has an option to buy the Centre City project building at 40 S. Main St., asked the city of Dayton to help it obtain grant money from the state of Ohio through the Clean Ohio Fund. The $750,000 grant would go toward asbestos abatement. The Centre City project will cost between $15 million and $20 million. The building will be redeveloped to include 100 apartment units and six floors of commercial use. The 21-story building now is 20 percent occupied and was built in 1904. http://dayton.bizjournals.com/dayton/stories/2006/10/16/daily24.html?t=printable
