Cincinnati Enquirer
I've never really had a problem with the Dayton Daily News and their coverage of new, but since their makeover this spring I have not been happy with their new format. It might as well be called USA Today-Dayton Edition. It seems like the stories have been dumbed down, all articles shortened (they no longer continue articles to another page...so if it is a big story, I have to read multiple short articles about the same subject), more regurgitating stories that have already been reported earlier in the week, more of a focus on quick snipits, etc. In my opinion, they have gone in the wrong direction with their recent changes.

Dayton: Miami Valley schools ranked top to bottom
While Dayton's score still looks pretty bad, DPS superintendent Percy Mack should be commended for the outstanding progress that has been made under his leadership. Dayton Politics has an entry about the progress that DPS has made here (although I think daytonpolitics.com is really trying to make something out of nothing with a headline of "Is the Dayton Daily News racist or just anti-Dayton?")

Cincinnati: West Chester - Ikea Coming to Union Centre
I think you make a valid point, but I do think that Ikea differs some from the average big box retailer. Most importantly, it is a destination. Whenever I would go to Ikea in Schaumburg, IL or Robinson Township, PA, I would make a weekend of it and stay in downtown Chicago or Pittsburgh. Another thing, is there locally owned-competition in this retail segment? There very well may be, but it seems as though all scandinavian furniture stores I have been to are quite expensive. IMHO, I doubt most of the people who are spending the big bucks on the high quality stuff would want cheap Ikea stuff. I'm sure Ikea has plenty of the negatives associated with the typical big box retailer, but I guess they have a couple things going for it that most others don't.

Dayton: "Downtown's just fine."
Yeah, something that a lot of people seem to forget is that Lexis-Nexis used to be owned by Mead and called Mead Data Central. So it is not surprising that there is a lot of Mead owned land around the Lexis-Nexis HQ. However, I have no idea if they acquired all that land for the purpose of building a campus for Lexus-Nexis or if they have owned that land long before that or what.

Dayton: "Downtown's just fine."
I guess the only thing here that could be considered surprising is that they will be building a new building. I know Mead owned a bunch of undeveloped land around there that they have had for sale, so I wonder if it will be on some of that land. NewPage leaving Dayton; moving to Miami Twp. By Kristin McAllister Staff Writer DAYTON | NewPage Corporation today announced plans to move its 250 employees out of the MeadWestvaco Tower at Courthouse Square and into a new headquarters to be built in Miami Township in southern Montgomery County. The paper products company has signed a letter of intent with the Bunnell Hill Development and Construction Company to build a new corporate headquarters at the Newmark Center at the southeast corner of Interstate 75 and Interstate 675, just south of the Dayton Mall. NewPage has made plans for a short-term lease of its current space in the MeadWestvaco Tower and plans to move by the second quarter of 2007. Its current lease in the MeadWestvacao Tower is up March 2007. Read More...

Beavercreek: The Greene Town Center
How's that the case? I probably agree with you, but I guess I'm just not seeing what you are saying with Cross Pointe shifting towards the Dayton Mall. The Cross Pointe location's closing coinsides with the openning of the location at the Greene, not the openning of the Dayton Mall location that openned a few years ago to replace the theater that was part of the Dayton Mall. Granted, I'm sure each of the two newer theaters alone had/would have quite an impact on business at Cross Pointe, but it seems like the new Greene location is the nail in the coffin. Also, National Amusements-owners of Showcase-has owned the land that the Greene is being built on for the last 10 years or so, so really this has been all a part of their plans for some time now. And we can blame then for the whole Greene project. :-) Just a Cinema DeLux? :? The Cinema DeLux at the Greene has more screens than Cross Pointe had. Based on what has been annouced so far, I don't think either mall has much to worry about yet. Restaurants might be another story.

Norwood budget deficit woes
I've always wondered how Norwood has such a terrible budget situation. I understand they took a huge hit when GM closed, but there are plenty of cities that never had a GM plant or the equivilent. Based on what I've seen, they aren't providing any extra services that would be considered out of the ordinary that would cause a drain on the budget. Are their union contracts that out of line with the norm? Have they place levies on the ballot that voters have rejected that would be approved in other cities or what?

Dayton: General Business & Economic News
Actually this sounds like it might not be bad for Dayton (unless, of course, you are referring to the first article). Some are saying this is a merger and some are saying Universal Computer Systems bought out Reynolds and Reynolds, but regardless, the new Reynolds & Reynolds will still be headquarted in Kettering. The company should be bigger and better. And although some jobs will undoubtedly be cut because of the merger, hopefully the bulk of the cuts will be in Texas.

Walnut Hills Mega-Thread
Nice thread Jeff. I live about two blocks from Walnut Hills and pass through it each day to and from work, but we were really looking at a few houses in Walnut Hills before we settled on the one we ended up buying. The Ohmer house and the area around it is also a pretty nice area within the neighborhood. Tanks is great...as others have said, great bar food, good beer selection, and a good mix of people. mrnyc, yeah, are are right about Walnut Hills the bar. It was in the building that is now Tanks, then moved downtown, then moved to the corner of Brown and Wyoming, and now is in the back of the new shops on Brown Street. Apparently the two owners of Walnut Hills had a falling out and one kept the building at Brown and Wyoming (now Jimmy's Cornerstone Bar) and the other got to keep the name (the new Walnut Hills Bar).

Fostoria / Seneca County: Development and News
Lakota BOE eyes new K-12 Fostoria Review Times, 7/18/06 Lakota Local Schools might get a new K-12 building if an application for extra funding passes through the Ohio School Facilities Commission. The commission has an exceptional needs building replacement program that provides low-wealth districts the ability to protect their students with a new building. Lakota is submitting applications for Central and East Elementary, and the junior high, but will get the K-12 building if just one of these is accepted. Maintenance Head Marvin Schroeder went around with an employee from Fanning/Howey, Associates, Inc., an engineering and architectural firm, to show the deterioration in the buildings. "We must, as a community, strengthen one of the basic needs of our education system, and that is shelter," Acting Superintendent Beckie Heimlich said at Lakota's Board of Education meeting Monday at Central Elementary. She said Lakota's shelter system is substandard, and most of the repairshave been bandages that mask serious problems.

Zoning panel deals setback to Wal-Mart Supercenter Toledo Blade, 7/18/06 The Wal-Mart Supercenter proposed for Perrysburg Township hit a snag last night when the township zoning commission turned down the store's site plan and asked to see a new one next month. "It appears to be an incomplete site plan that we have to review tonight," Chairman Robert Black said. The commission voted 4-0 against approving the plan, with no discussion. Member Jeff Schaller was absent. Mr. Black said the township received the site plan on Thursday and found 23 problems with it. He gave a letter detailing those problems last night to Nick Miller of Atwell-Hicks, the engineering firm working with Wal-Mart Stores Inc. to develop the project.

Bowling Green / Wood County: Development and News
Perrysburg Township asks to buy land Toledo Blade, 7/18/06 Perrysburg Township officials last night asked members of the Rossford Board of Education to consider selling land to the township so it can expand its administration building. Township trustees rescheduled last night's semimonthly meeting to 7:30 p.m. tonight so Trustees Bob Mack and Gary Britten could attend the school board meeting along with other township officials. While there, they asked to buy a 150-foot strip of land next to the administration building for fair market value. The land is south of the building off Lime City Road. Township officials want the land because they need more office space and room for the fire department at the administration building.

Covington, KY: Jillian's Redevelopment
Sounds like they took a risk and it didn't pay off..... http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php?topic=333.msg103408#msg103408 Cincinnati Enquirer, 6/4/06 Jillian's has completed a $275,000 overhaul of its Covington location. A unit of JBC Entertainment Corp. of Louisville, Jillian's said it plans to improve seven of its 20 outlets in the next three years.
