Dayton: University of Dayton / University Park: Development and News
^ Thanks, Ink. Very interesting, as I have not seen those. There was talk of renovating Chaminade Hall for the School of Education, but the latest talk I've been hearing is that the School of Ed may be relocated to Campus West (the old NCR property). I guess we'll have a better idea of what the plans are once Burt Hill finishes the master plan.

Findlay: Random Development and News
County OKs courthouse work Findlay Courier, 5/16/06 The Hancock County Commissioners will be spending some money on its 100-year-old-plus courthouse this year for maintenance and to improve energy efficiency. Last week the commissioners voted to spend more than $20,000 in a project to fix courthouse mortar joints and clean and restore glass in all the courthouse windows. Commissioner Ed Ingold said the board meant to complete the project last year, but ran out of time. He said cleaning and restoring the courthouse windows became linked with the mortar joints when it was discovered that moisture was leaking through the mortar and affecting the windows.

Ohio & National Intercity Bus Discussion
A couple of weeks ago I bought 2 round trip tickets to Chicago from Cincinnati for $2.50 each for a weekend in June. I don't even know if I can go that weekend, but I couldn't pass up $2.50 tickets. Let's hope they're still in business then.

Other than her comment about "far off parking lots" the writer seems to be more or less correct... COMMENTARY Stephanie Irwin: The Greene falls short on first list of tenants By Stephanie Irwin Dayton Daily News So what do you think was the reaction here when The Greene's developer made its first big tenant announcements Friday? Beavercreek: The Greene Town Center
Are you serious? I like to shop and not one of these stores make me want to go to the the place. I'm sure that downtown places like The Cannery, The Cooper Lofts, The Landing, Lofts on St. Clair, The Merc, and St. Clairs Lofts blow away any so-called lofts that will be a part of The Greene.

Metro Dayton: Road & Highway News
From the City of Dayton.... Renovated Findlay Street Bridge Opens Officials from the City of Dayton and the Ohio Department of Transportation recently came together to celebrate the opening of the new Findlay Street Bridge. The original Findlay Street Bridge over the Mad River was built in 1926. Over time the bridge had deteriorated and needed weight restrictions. The old structure was officially closed in January of 2005 and completely demolished, making way for the new updated construction. The new bridge is four lanes wide and features 10-foot wide sidewalks and ornamental lighting. The project also included reconstruction of Findlay Street from Monument Avenue to the Findlay Street Bridge, and Stanley Avenue from the Findlay Street Bridge to the entrance ramp of northbound State Route 4. In addition, there is new pavement, curbs, sidewalks, lighting, and storm sewers. The new bridge was designed by Woolpert and built by Ahern & Associates. The $4.8 million project was funded by the Ohio Department of Transportations City Bridge Program, the Ohio Public Works Commissions Issue II Program and the City of Dayton.

Miscellaneous Ohio Political News
Wasn't creating an election commission to oversee the elections and removing that authority from the Secretary of State's position part of one of the issues on the ballot last year that failed?

Ohio Last out of 50 States in protections for gays/lesbians/transgendered
Yeah, the ranking seems kinda off to me... Sounds like a good statistic to include in fund raising material... I know of a couple people who participated in the Lobby Day event yesterday, so I'll have to see if they have any more info or insights about the study

Cincinnati: General Business & Economic News
I really don't know anything about the auto industry, but it certainly appears that Honda and Ohio have a good relationship. Just look at some of the recent/current investments in Ohio facilities. $100 million expansion of the Honda transmission plant in Russells Point $89 million expansion of the parts warehouse in Troy (was in competition with Kentucky and Chicago area...chose Troy even though more expensive) $123 million Marysville Auto Plant paint line $20 million expansion in 2003 of the Anna Engine Plant $75 million just announced expansion at its Anna Engine Plant Although most of these are expansions of existing facilities, I think it speaks well for Ohio. I'm sure a lot of relationships have been established between Ohio and Honda officials while working on these projects. Although it does really mean anything, I think it can only help. Also, I found this information interesting..... Larry Jutte, senior vice president of Honda's U.S. manufacturing arm, said engines from the new $140 million engine plant in Canada and the Anna, Ohio plant, will supply the new auto plant. From a geographic standpoint (and just-in-time delivery), does SE Indiana make sense? Or overall is that minor?

Toledo: Downtown: ProMedica HQ / Edison Plant Redevelopment
Don't get steamed Developers say the steam plant is on schedule By Steve Steel, The Toledo City Paper Riverfront – For Rent: dozens of upscale residential spaces in newly renovated historic building with adjacent park and docking facilities. Townhouse suites available. Sound like a desirable locale? It is the vision and intent for the redevelopment of the former Toledo Edison steam plant Downtown. Renamed "Water Street Station" after its Water Street location, the project is currently in the final design phase and construction will begin this spring, according to lead developer David Ball of STS Management. "This is a big project," said Ball, "and we are committed to doing it right. That will take time." Ball and his partner Jimmy Jackson won the rights from the City of Toledo to redevelop the property after submitting proposals that included constructing a building on the river side of the existing plant providing additional commercial and residential space and adding an internal courtyard. One of the most time-consuming aspects of the project, according to Ball, is qualifying for historic tax credits from the State of Ohio. "We have completed absolutely everything that we possibly could without having our tax credits at risk," he said, including design, site preparation, title transfer and permits. Findlay: Random Development and News
Akron firm picks Findlay for new plant Findlay Courier, 5/2/06 Add A. Schulman Inc., an international supplier of plastic compounds and resins, to Findlay's industrial base. Company officials said Monday that within the next couple of weeks, Akron-based A. Schulman plans to close a deal to purchase about 49 acres of land located south and east of the existing Cardinal Health distribution center in the Tall Timbers Industrial Center, and begin construction on a $40 million, 100,000-square-foot manufacturing plant. The factory will eventually employ 50 workers. Ron Andres, A. Schulman's vice president of North America operations, said a groundbreaking ceremony will be held later this month and initial site work will begin. It's expected the new plant will be operational by late summer 2007.

Dayton: University of Dayton / University Park: Development and News
I took these images from the PowerPoint that Burt Hill presented while they were on campus as a finalist before they were chosen as the university's new master planning firm. These were some initial concepts that they shared. The master planning process is just beginning, so it will be some time before we get some actual proposals. Looking south from Brown and Stewart Streets Looking west down K Street from Brown Street Here is a picture as the old NCR land appears now...

Ohio's Discount Stores
One store I remember while growing up in Celina was Barr's. It was pretty much your typical downtown five-and-dime store in small-town Ohio. Being a kid at the time, the two things I remember most are the toy department that was located in the basement and the old-fashioned candy counter. I think they probably went out of business in the early to mid 90's. I'm not sure how big the chain was at its peak or demise, but I do remember that they were owned by a parent company with a different name when they closed. I've searched, but haven't been able to find any information online. Another store that I was reminded of recently was The Sundry Store. While I was home not too long ago, my mom got something out of the attic and it was in a Sundry Store bag...never would have remembered it otherwise (probably because they didn't have a toy department). It too was a chain of stores in small towns in Ohio...the bag had the list of locations on the bag, but I didn't look closely. I think it was more like a pharmacy, but without the actual pharmacy.

Miamisburg / Springboro: Austin Landing
Thanks for the update, Jeff. Well, I think it can be argued that these new interchanges do hurt the urban core by facilitating sprawl. While I won't dispute that jobs have been created, how many have been created vs. how many have just been redistributed from within the metro area?
