  1. NW Ohio projects get $3M in block grants Toledo Blade, 5/20/06 Community Development Block Grants totaling more than $3 million have been announced by Lt. Gov. Bruce Johnson for northwest Ohio. Wood County and D.S. Brown Co., of North Baltimore, are expected to create 52 jobs with the announced $1.6 million Ohio Small Cities Community Development Block Grant. The steel and rubber company will build a 15,000-square-foot addition to its plant and buy new equipment. The county will use its share of the grant to make road, drainage, and sewerage improvements to the site. Williams County plans to use its $1.6 million grant to loan funds to Ferguson Tools, a specialty cutting-tool manufacturer in Edgerton. The company will use the money to buy machinery and equipment and to increase production.

  3. Judge denies plea to stop zoning vote Toledo Blade, 4/20/06 The developer of an upscale housing subdivision yesterday tried to stop Oregon City Council from taking a second vote on zoning changes that it approved in February for the controversial project. However, retired Judge Ronald Bowman denied a request from the developer, Noel E. Graham, for a temporary restraining order that would have prevented the council vote on two ordinances at Monday's meeting. Mr. Graham filed a lawsuit in Lucas County Common Pleas Court against the city, the Lucas County Board of Elections, and a committee that collected signatures to repeal the zoning changes. In February, council granted rezoning changes requested by Mr. Graham for parcels off Seaman Road and Corduroy Road, allowing for the construction of 64 homes costing $225,000 to $350,000.
  4. Blah. I take 35 and Steve Whalen Blvd. all the time since they are right by my house...but luckily not to work so I won't have to deal with rush hour. Also, is it really better to redesign and build new ramps than maintain what is already there? I know the interchange is overbuilt, as was discussed in the Steve Whalen Blvd. thread, but it just seems like a waste to replace them unless they are at the point where they need some significant work. I'm not a big fan of 35. Divided neighborhoods (wonder how things would be different if the Oregon District and South Park weren't divided by the highway) and feel it was poorly designed: unnecessarily takes up too much land, entrances and exits on left, crossing over a couple lanes of traffic quickly to be able to exit, etc.

Very true, PrfctTimeOfDay. When I worked there a few summers ago, not only was the tower completely full, they had offices in Miami Township, and I believe they also had office space in One Dayton Center. I wonder how long Consumer and Office Products will stay in downtown, or even in Dayton for that matter. I think their At-A-Glance unity is still in Sidney, NY and they may have a couple of other units elsewhere. I wonder how long before they want to consolidate all these units in one place...probably Richmond. :(

Geez Monte. Yes, Dayton has its fair share of problems, but as someone who works in the Dayton area, you do have a vested interest in the success of greater Dayton. And as such, I invited you get involved in an organization such as Grassroots Greater Dayton who is promoting responsible growth and urban redevelopment. Many people view OTR as a place that has "more problems than it can count" and would like to see it bulldozed. You, I, and everyone else on this board know that that is just preposterous. Although work needs to be done, there are great things that can come from working together to improve OTR. And the same can be said for Dayton. Before you write off Dayton as a place that has "more problems than it can count," I invite you to be a part of the solution Although I don't want to speak for Jeff, I believe the point about Canal Street Tavern that he was making was that popular music venues have been quite successful in bringing people from all part of Dayton together. While the same can be said about Cincinnati, the talk about the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra's slight chance of moving and Oscar Treadwell's comments caused him to question that in Cincinnati. However, as he pointed out, the Arnoff Center was built downtown, and not in Blue Ash. All that being said, I certainly hope the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra stays at Music Hall, as I believe they will. I have very much enjoyed going to Music Hall for few performance that I have seen there.
  8. I too thought 200,000 square feet was about right for a Super Wal-Mart....according to a press release, the new Wal-Mart in my hometown of Celina is 203,091 sq. ft....but as you said KJP, it sucks.
  9. There's one in Beavercreek. I'd say it's more similar to Baja Fresh, but I was not impressed and have not gone back.

This list seems more complete... http://radiostationworld.com/locations/united_states_of_america/ohio/default.asp The links to streaming audio at Clear Channel stations don't seem to work...but that's fine by me

I think it is just a list of stations that use Stream Audio because I notice a number missing just from Dayton...but it is still a good list to have
  12. The real question is "Does Bob Hagan like Handels ice cream?"
  13. Using the facebook method, Cincinnati is listed as the number one hometown of UD students.

  15. Dayton bridge replacement plans... The Washington Street Bridge will be the next to be replaced. The Dayton Expressway (Rt. 4) Bridge over Keowee Street will be bid in April-May 2006. The Monument Avenue (Dayton View) Bridge will be bid in 2007. The Paul Laurence Dunbar Bridge over Wolf Creek will be bid in 2007. In 2008, the Edwin C. Moses Bridge, the Bridge Street Bridge (perhaps), and the Stewart Street Bridge will be bid Regarding the Stewart Street Bridge... a contract would be awarded in mid-late February 2006 to a consultant for the project. Public meetings on the project will begin in April 2006. It is a two-year design process for the bridge; the project will be bid in March 2008. Key components for the consultant to address are that the bridge be a signature bridge, it have sufficient capacity, that traffic will be maintained during construction, that the public be involved in the project and that the project gets through ODOT’s environmental review process quickly. The bridge is estimated to cost $15 million, of which $12 million will come from ODOT. The City will seek Issue I (formerly Issue II) funding for some of the shortfall and City capital dollars may also be used. The project will be coordinated with the UD Master Plan. Its looking like the Strewart Street Bridge will be built south of the current bridge...how far south I don't know.
  16. I think the Germantown area
  17. They're still around, but I don't think there are any left in the Dayton area and the not-so-old one in Lima closed a week ago.

Great job. 9th Street is one of those streets that for some reason I tend to overlook, but definitely has some great buildings.

Court orders sale of Schwind Building Developer left project unfinished, $1.1M loan in default By Stephanie Irwin [email protected] DAYTON | Since the developer for the Schwind Building abandoned the project last summer, construction at 25-27 Ludlow St. has gone nowhere — and soon the building itself will be going, going, gone. The Montgomery County Common Pleas Court has ordered that the former hotel be sold at sheriff's auction as part of a mortgage foreclosure completed last week against its owner, developer Bill Rain and his company Rain & Associates. J.P. Morgan Chase Bank sued Rain in October when redevelopment of the building into market-rate loft housing failed to meet its July 2005 deadline. Read More...
  20. Also, here are some other maps of bike trails and proposed bike trails in the Dayton area. http://www.bikemiamivalley.org/maps.htm
  21. Unfortunately, I don't take advantage of the Five Rivers MetroParks as much as I should....RiverScape and the 2nd Street Market are the Fiver Rivers facilities I visit most often. If I feel like a hike out in the woods, I usally end up going to Glen Helen, John Bryan, or Clifton Gorge, all in the Yellow Springs area.
  22. Dumb question, but does Nationwide do these downtown Columbus projects solely as an investment for insurance premiums, to be a good corporate citizen, or a combination of both?

  24. Commission approves $40K for four lake projects Port Clinton News Herald, 4/2/06 The Ohio Lake Erie Commission has awarded nearly $40,000 for four small grant projects that will benefit Lake Erie and its environmental, recreational and economic resources. Grant recipients include: * The University of Toledo received $9,576 for its project "Survey Fish Diversity: Testing the impact of vegetative encroachment." The project will compare the structure and composition of fish communities in agricultural streams with and without vegetated encroachment. The research will be focused on the headwaters of the Ottawa River, a tributary to western Lake Erie. * U.S. Geological Survey was awarded a $10,000 grant to continue the study: "Rapid Method of E.coli in the Cuyahoga River." The survey will test the accuracy of a previously introduced model for testing E.coli and, if necessary, develop a more accurate model. * Toledo Harbor Lighthouse Preservation Society was awarded $10,000 to construct a floating access dock and ramp system to allow visitors easier access to the Toledo Harbor Lighthouse. This is the first step towards renovation of the lighthouse. * U.S. Geological Survey received $10,000 to examine the discharge of E.coli and suspended sediment from the Berger Ditch and Maumee Bay State Park beach into Lake Erie. The results will help in determining the E.coli levels in the water and provide information for the design of a wetland to treat water before it enters Maumee Bay.
