  1. Reviving Roosevelt Proposals would convert empty hallways of Dayton landmark to senior housing or community center By Cathy Mong Dayton Daily News DAYTON | Not much has changed since Roosevelt High School last graduated a class of Mighty Teddies in 1975; the neighborhoods surrounding the site are still steeped in poverty and residents steadfastly view the majestic icon as a symbol of strength and renewal. Two proposals for reusing the stately behemoth aim to rekindle the kind of loyalty matching that of Phyllis Chrisman Fuller, who graduated from Roosevelt on June 6, 1944 — D-Day. 2. Nice pics. I definitely would like to check out Providence sometime. I wonder how large the Biltmore Hotel chain was. Wikipedia has a short list of cities, but I can't find anything more indepth.
  3. That would be interesting to know. When I interned with Cincinnati Bell Wireless' business division, I spent my entire day going to businesses in the area (yes, it was the best job ever--spending my entire day driving around the Cincinnati area and walking around downtown--it was great) I was blown away by the number of small companies that you never hear about...and so many of them were here because of Kroger. And then throw in the secondary companies located in Cincinnati because of P&G. I think the number of these job would really surprise people. To make things even better, most of these companies were downtown. While people may complain about the Convergy's deal, IMHO Cincinnati must always do whatever they have to to keep Kroger and P&G headquarters downtown. The combination of these two companies have such a huge economic impact on Cincinnati and downtown specifically.
  4. Here is the rendering of the new Golden Nugget that was approved by the city of Kettering....just doesn't look like it has the same "character" as the old place. Definitely glad to see them rebuilding, though.
  5. Let the sprawl begin (well, "continue" is more like it). Not really sure if this belongs here, the Austin Pike thread, or its own thread... Ohio 741 office park plans OK'd Part of growth expected near Austin Pike interchange with Interstate 75 By Stephanie Irwin [email protected] MIAMI TWP., Montgomery County | A 42-acre office and retail complex at Ohio 741 and Spring Valley Pike will break ground in spring, one of the first signs of commercial growth expected to emerge on the empty land near the Interstate 75/Austin Pike interchange project. A final development plan for portions of The Exchange at Spring Valley, proposed by Oberer Land Developers Ltd., was approved by the Miami Twp. zoning commission Tuesday night. Two restaurants — Milano's and possibly Cadillac Jack's — and five office and retail spaces will line nine acres on the front of the property along Ohio 741 from Ferndown Drive to Miami Village Drive. The remaining land will have about 345,000 square feet of office space in several one- and two-story buildings. Tenants for the office space were not disclosed. Oberer representatives were not immediately available for comment. ... http://www.daytondailynews.com/business/content/business/daily/0222exchange.html

  8. AMEN! I'll take this as an opportunity to encourage people out there to sign Equality Ohio's Equality Pledge or to participate in Lobby Day for Equality.
  9. Good to hear. I'm sure it helped that Rev. Raleigh Trammel of Dayton is the national SCLC board chairman...always good to have friends in high places.

  11. I think right now all anyone can hope for is for Steiner to do better with retail at the Greene than they did at Newport on the Levee. (or maybe some may hope they don't have any more success than they did with retail at NOTL ;)) My opinions on some of the stores you listed.... The Cheesecake Factory - it'll be there The Sharper Image - already have a Brookstone store at Fairfield Commons, so close enough for me Nordstrom - If Cincinnati can't get one.... Urban Outfitters - a possibility Gameworks - a better possibility H&M - If Fort Wayne can get one, so can Dayton Paul Frank - nope Gloria Jean's - not sure why the one in Fairfield Commons closed And no chance in hell for Dayton: Armani Exchange Burberry Cartier D&G Gucci Hermes Kate Spade Louis Vuitton Neiman Marcus Tourneau Versace Zara

I haven't really used Coppermine other than playing around with it a little bit, but have used Gallery2 and have really liked it. I haven't used PBase, so I can't really compare it to that. The Gallery page is at http://gallery.menalto.com/ As far as integrating Gallery into Mambo, it can be done, but I'm not sure how easy it is. I think a visual integration can be done pretty easily. But as far as a functional integration, it looks like it is in the beta stages, so I'm not sure how stable it is. You can check out http://codex.gallery2.org/index.php/Gallery2:Embedding Also, if you just google mambo, gallery 2, and embedding or integration there are plenty of forum discussions on it.
  14. What? A cohesive look for a hospital?

Looks great! As always, great photographs and content. Personally, I have found Mambo/Joomla to be great. It has really made it much easier to manger my sites and keep everything current--no matter where you are. It's also great when making site-wide changes. Have you thought about using something like Gallery2 or Coppermine for your photos or are you quite happy with PBase? Also, I am getting the pop-up ad. Does the add on counter give you more stats than your host or mambo?
  16. The Boonshoft Center for Medical Sciences is getting close to completion....

How is adopting a child pushing my "lifestyle" on you? Yes, children can ridicule and tease and I hate for any child to endure that. However, do we ban Ronald McDonald because he promotes obesity, thus causing a child ridicule? Do we not send learning disabled children to school because they may be teased? Do we force our child to squint and not be able see well because of teasing they may face because of wearing glasses? Children will always find ways to ridicule others about anything and everything. It is an unfortunate part of growing up, but the most important thing is how it is handled. I didn't like being picked on for wearing glasses, being short in elementary school, etc., but my parents used it as an opportunity to have conversations with me that helped me grow. I think it helped strengthen my relationship with my parents, made me more likely to stand up for others, and helped make me learn that differences are part of life. I was raised by a mom and dad. I am gay. While I didn't go to them for dating advise, they taught me how to be a good person. They were loving. Growing up gay with straight parents didn't cause me nearly as much confusion and anxiety as a bigoted and unaccepting society did, but hiding or ignoring the issue does nothing but perpetuate the problem. In fact, I think it is more harmful for a child to grow up closeted with any type of parents than it would be for a child to grow up with gay parents. I thought you said that a child is born gay or straight. What behaviors are a straight(as I assume you were inferring) child going to follow as an adult if they were raised by gay parents? I agree, but see no reason why two parents of the same sex can't do the same. We have foster parents--1 male and 1 female--locking children in cages. On tv the other day, there was a young women talking about having to grow up in 40 foster homes before she turned 18. I think this illustrates the importance of providing children with caring and loving parents, and see no reason why two parents of the same sex cannot do this. Personally, I think these statistics show that our lawmakers should be focusing their efforts elsewhere and let--in fact, encourage--loving parents to adopt children, especially children in our foster care system. A child in Ohio is abused or neglected every 10 minutes A child in Ohio is born into poverty every 21 minutes A child in Ohio dies before his or her first birthday every 8 hours A child or teen in Ohio is killed by gunfire every 4 days Number of poor children 475,207 Percent of children who are poor 16.8% Number of children who were victims of abuse and neglect 50,141 Number of children in foster care 21,012 Number of children without health insurance 270,000 Percent of two-year-olds who are not fully immunized25.0%

Nine states allow for openly gay and lesbian couples to adopt jointly: California Massachusetts New Jersey New Mexico New York Ohio Vermont Washington Wisconsin as well as D.C. So far only one state, Florida, totally bans gay adoption. It is more common for one partner to adopt and then for the second to apply as the second parent, or co-parent. Second parent adoptions creates a second legally recognized parent for the adoptive children. This is the only way for gay couples to both become legal parents of their children. Second parent adoptions have been granted by the courts in twenty-one states as well as D.C. These states include - Alabama, Alaska, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Vermont, and Washington. I'll try to get some more info when I have some time, but good online resourses would be Lambda Legal and National Adoption Information Clearinghouse

While I see your point, ColDayMan, how long do my partner and I have to wait until we can get married or, hell, even a "civil union"? How long do we have to wait to have child if this passes (which I don't think it will, but nonetheless)? It's not realistic for us to wait 30 years to have a child. When we decide to start our family, that will be much more important to me than any loyalty to a state. I do nearly everything I possibly can to promote change for the better in Ohio. I vote in every election. I try to educate those who have different opinions when I can. I encourage others to vote. I write and call my elected officials. I donate to causes that support my point of view. I volunteer for these causes when I can. I work on committees promoting these causes. I attend pride events--not so much because I enjoy them, but I feel the more people there, the better. I do and will continue doing these things, but there will be a point in my life where if who I am has been completely condemned by the state of Ohio government, I will look elsewhere. Until that day though, I will continue to fight the fight.

Ashville is 20 miles or so south of Columbus. Hardly the Dayton/Cincinnati area. In fact, the article states that Jon Husted, the Republican Speaker of the House, from Kettering (Dayton suburb) is opposed to the proposal. Now having said that...I agree...this is bullshit. My partner and I are certainly considering adopting some day. I try to stay positive about Ohio and fight what I feel is wrong with the state, but with continued proposals like this, moving somewhere else looks better and better. I'm not ready to give up on Ohio yet, but I hope our elected officials start tackling the issues that really matter and will truly make Ohio a better state.

  23. What's the story behind Jamestown's black history? Underground railroad? And also, are Wilberforce and later Central State located where they are because of the underground railroad? Other than passing through Jamestown a couple of times, I know very little about it. Greene County--especially when you look at higher education--has a little something for everyone. Everything from the Air Force Institute of Technology to Antioch; from Cedarville to Wilberforce and Central State; and from Wright State to Payne Theology. But I digress.
