  1. The 24 hour Wendy's at the corner of Wayne and Wyoming in Dayton (which I must say is by far the best Wendy's anywhere, at least the drive thru service) serves breakfast. There have been a couple of times after a long night of drinking that I have gone there and they have said they were only serving breakfast at the time...I wasn't too happy because I was definitely craving a JBC. And while we are on the subject of Wendy's, did other Wendy's have "Chili, Chips, and Cheese"? It was never on the menu here, but everyone always seemed to order it. The last time I ordered it, they said they no longer served it...what's up with that?
  2. Not likely. All the inner-city Kroger carts, have wheels that automatically lock-up when you leave the parking lot. Some of the Kroger and Walgreens here in Dayton have carts that lock the wheels if you try to take them out of the parking lot, so I assume they would have this for this new store.
  3. Center proposal wins $69M Salvation Army's community center plan linked to raising $6 million locally By Margo Rutledge Kissell Dayton Daily News DAYTON | The Salvation Army of Dayton will receive $69 million from the international charity to build and help operate a community center in North Dayton if officials can raise $6 million locally. "We're elated. It's a wonderful day for the city of Dayton," the Dayton command's Maj. Tom Duperree said in a phone call from West Nyack, N.Y., on Monday afternoon. He and business manager Reggie Winters learned the news during a meeting for the eight communities in the Salvation Army's eastern territory that was awarded funds as were part of the $1.6 billion bequest McDonald's heiress Joan B. Kroc left the charity when she died in 2004. She wanted the gift to be used to develop community centers in underserved neighborhoods across the country. The local command would receive $33 million for construction and a $36 million endowment to help operate the complex at Keowee and Webster streets, now the site of the Duncarrick mansion, that would feature recreation, education and worship components. They would have a year to show they are able to raise $6 million locally. "I don't think there's a much better deal we could have struck today," Winters said. http://www.daytondailynews.com/localnews/content/localnews/daily/0207salvation.html
  4. Maybe a mile or so south of downtown...at the corner of South Main and Kibby Streets....near St. John's Catholic Church.
  5. While I certainly hope they can bring back Kibby Corners, it definitely has a long way to go. The building have become pretty run down and some have been demolished just recently, as the article mentions. I certainly wish them much luck, but am not that hopeful.
  6. Great job! Nice to see some pictures of the old neighborhood. Looks like you were about standing in front of my old building when you took the pic of O'Bryon's.
  7. While Mr. Bohardt certainly makes some interesting points, I'm not sure what to think of it. I agree with his point that it is premature to say this will kill the CBD. Are there really that many companies that want to get out of downtown? And if these companies are really that eager to move out of the CBD, won't they just end up in the south or east suburbs if there aren't any viable alternative within the city? Now don't get me wrong, I want a healthy CBD and don't want these companies to leave downtown. But if I had to choose between them moving to the suburbs or South Main Street, I'd much rather have them located within the city limits on the former NCR and fairgrounds properties. And I think it is a stretch for people to be considering as far south as Stewart Street part of downtown, but I guess it could be a possibility if companies start trying to do it to "justify" a move. Let's just hope that most of the jobs are new to the area :) Also, he did get somthing wrong--or at least wasn't clear about it. The property between Brown and Main Streets is slated for campus expansion/academic development (However, I have heard a few things lately about possible business/retail development at the corner of Brown and Stewart Streets), while the property between Main and Patterson is what is being proposed for business and mixed-use development (current early plans call for UD to maintain ownership of building and property and lease them to businesses). UD President Dr. Curran has made some sort of comment about a large retailer being interested in the property (rumored to be Kroger), but he said that is not the type of development they are interested in brining to the property (good to hear). I was going to guess that the western part (the part of business/mixed use development) of the property was going to be similar to the Governor's Place development in Kettering. They are talking more of also including housing, so I guess I don't really know what to expect now. I just hope that Miller-Valentine doesn't get involved in this project.
  8. I went to the Ohio Historical Center this summer and was...well, underwhelmed. It seemed like it was pretty much geared to elementary school field trips. For a state like Ohio that has such a rich and diverse history--especially industrial history, there could be more exciting exhibits with broader appeal. However, minerals and fossils and stuff like that don't really do much for me, so I guess those that enjoy that sort of thing probably have a different opinion of the museum. Also, I'm sure it has been a difficult time for the museum with state budget cuts, so hopefully these changes will help increase attendance.
  9. A friend of mine used to work for Cincinnati Microwave and I think he said that Escort was part of Cincinnati Microwave until they filed for bankruptcy
  10. Coretta Scott King majored in Music Education at Antioch--where her sister was one of the first-if not the first-black students to be admitted to Antioch. Although Ms. King reportedly did not face "serious" issues with race at Antioch, she was unable to find a student teaching job in the area because of her race. Antioch awarded her their distinguished alumni award a couple of years ago and she attended and spoke at the event. They also dedicated a center for cultural and intellectual freedom in her name. I saw Coretta Scott King speak last March at UD...although certainly physically frail, she delivered a very powerful message--not only about race relations, but also about gender, sexual orientation, economic, and other issues. She was truly a friend to many and will be missed.
  11. Dayton school board to decide on Roosevelt building's future It hears two plans for use of the former high school By Cathy Mong Dayton Daily News DAYTON | Roosevelt High School's tie to thousands of Daytonians, especially black residents in the city's western quadrant, is an emotional one, so its future is of keen interest. Two distinctly different proposals for reuse of the 72-year-old West Third Street icon were presented to Dayton school board members Tuesday night. The board is expected to decide by month's end if either project gets its blessing, President Gail Littlejohn said. I have succumb to the pressures from my student employees and joined facebook.
  13. I agree. Nothing fancy, but there's just something about it I love. Am I correct that it used to be a YMCA?

Wow, its been a while since I last watched the WCPO news ;-) ... http://www.youtube.com/?v=aHq6a8N-EP8 (Not really safe to watch at work)

Is that near the downtown library? I think I remember seeing that building in that area a few years ago and thought it looked kinda cool for being a tire place.
  16. I wonder if this plan will have any impact on the Clopay factory in Russia (pronounced Roo-she) in Shelby County.
  17. LOL

^ Correct. A new arena came to fruition through Geiger's gentle romancing of the local Schottenstein family, which was seeking to raise the profile of its Value City discount stores. OSU has a rule against naming buildings for corporations, but Geiger figured a way around it; the overall facility would be called the Jerome Schottenstein Center, but the inside would be called Value City Arena. The Schottensteins wrote a check for $12.5 million, a record gift for OSU athletics.

That's what I thought as well. Schottenstein Center=entire building (arena+offices+practice facilities+whatever else is in there), Value City Arena=just the actual arena part of the building Really just a matter of semantics
  20. When I saw WRGT on the list I was going to make a comment about the reception sucking, but you beat me too it. However, I have it on right now and it is by far clearer than any other Dayton station.

There used to be a store called Functional Furnishings on High St. in the Short North and they also had a location in Polaris, but both locations have closed.
  22. I think my friend who is in management at PKI has said that officials from Busch Gardens have checked out the park in the past (this was probably a couple of years ago). Although obviously nothing came of it at the time, it does appear there was some sort of interest there. PKI has been trying to generate revenue in the off season (WinterFest, Great Wolf Lodge), but Paramount/Viacom execs sometimes fail to remember the seasonal nature of a park like PKI. I'll have to talk to him and see what he's heard--I'm sure there are plenty of rumors going around. Also, I assume CBS Corporation wants to focus more on its core business since it was separated from Viacom. Viacom is pretty much just a bunch of cable channels now. CBS Corporation consists of "mass-media brands, which are led by two broadcast networks in CBS and UPN; the CBS television stations group; CBS Radio; the CBS, Paramount and King World television production and syndication operations; the well-known premium cable brand Showtime; as well as Viacom Outdoor, Paramount Parks and Simon & Schuster."
  23. Haven't heard anything about this lately, but have seen petitions for people to sign and show support for the project (which I gladly signed)

That was the first thing I noticed. You can follow really well to Sidney, then it dies off a little in northern Shelby and Auglaize counties and picks back up again around Lima and on northward to Toledo (although not nearly as distinctly as the southern portion).
  25. Did Toyota's North American Manufacturing HQ locate in NKY before or after the Georgetown plant opened?
