  1. to answer my own question, aparently someone threw a brick or cinder block through the side closest to the bar (left panel if you are facing the building) and grabbed 5 or 6 bottles of booze. Really too bad.
  2. so what happened to the Grammer's windows????
  3. hey now. I live in North Avondale just up the road and into Rose Hill. Agree there are problems in the immediate surroundings, as well as fronting Reading. I agree probably not viable as a home but perhaps as some sort of office. Most of the architectural trasures and stained glass were stripped out of it a while ago. The guy that lived there had people stealing him blind....in fact, he may have been blind. It was an unfortunate situation and the placerepidly fell into extreme disrepair.
  4. then I shall begin my crusade anew....and smite yon bowl sinks from the face of the planet.
  5. please God let there be no bowl sinks in the bathrooms of these new projects.....
  6. I believe that was one of our best blogger tours yet. The Segways are a blast and certainly made going from building to building much easier. Also, Switch kicked in beer and wine afterward and it just made for a great evening. It was nice to finally meet some of the UO people and put both a face and a name to the person. Buildings toured included Goodfellows Hall, Falling Wall, Lackman Lofts, City Home, 14th and Vine, and Mottainai. All of these buildings will be on the Expansion Tour this Saturday from 12-4. Was that you guys going into Switch last night around 8:30? I should have crashed that party....I scootted off instead.
  7. that is my understanding as well.....although it is also my understanding that they have really dragged their feet on this whole issue for far too long. Be that as it may, as long as it is resolved to the residents' satisafaction (which one hopes it wil be), then all is (perhaps) forgiven.
  8. When are they going to announce Melt and the burger place moving into Duveneck ground floor??? Hopefully Urban Sites, with 3CDC prodding, will address the structural sound issues in the building before a class action suit is filed by the condo owners....
  9. didn't this news already break informally?
  10. service there can be a real challenge
  11. I was going to call in, but decided against it.....
  12. the sublevel is almost fully at ground level, other than at the western end. They are pouring cement on it now (from my bird's eye view).
  13. Any further info on this? dunnow. Check with Kathleen Norris@Huff in the Q
  14. The new Mt. Adams steps are pretty impressive. http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20090411/NEWS01/904110361 We walked the route from the church down to Sawyer Point. I had done this before, and, in the past, once you crossed over Columbia Parkway it was sort of a ramshackle terminus (or gateway) on Martin street near Adams Landing. The new entrance is now more of an almost park-like setting, with the 1853-era restored stone arch (massive), which leads to a large plaza (with historical info-signage). Very cool....ran into a barrel-rolling woodchuck on the way down as well. I would imaging the folks at Adams Landing and Towne are quite happy about this little developent. the only negative is the hisorical info signage seems to have problems....looks like they may not have been sealed properly...noticed this at both the top of the steps and the bottom.
  15. I don't think 5 Guys is a good fit for that space. They also typically depend on a lot of carryout business, with limited menu and no booze. You gotta at least be able to grab a beer with your burger in OTR.
  16. word is they have a "burger joint" tentatively in place for ground floor of the Duveneck Flats across from Lavomatic.
  17. The review board liked the corner with the angled brick roofline. Their biggest beef, and what they seemed to fixate upon, was the corner of 3rd and Main, across from the GABP entrance. They found this corner to be totally lacking in the type of presence that such a pivotal corner should command. To their credit, Germano and Co. listened to what they had to say, and invited everyone back to the architect's offices for a mini "charette" next week. They also didn't make any secret that there are cost concerns, but they are highlighting the fact that these will also be residences (apartments) and, essentially, some people don't want to live in a "work of art."
  18. not quite. Venice on Vine was the original Heuck's, which was then moved to 1221 Vine, and the Venice on Vine site was then dubbed the People's Theater.
  19. definitely need to have some coherent counter-programming on hand.
  20. Venice on Vine...originally Heuck's Opera House in the 1900's, and later the "People's Theater." Here's a good bit of history on that structure:

That was the downtown Synagogue, which, last I heard, was still open (barely). Next door is Cafe d'Mongo's, a popular and eclectic hipster hangout, with pretty decent food to boot. For many years it was the closed, time capsule-esque "Larrie's BackAlley Speakeasy." All of the glasses still hanging from above the bar, mint bowl by the door, 4 inches of dust coating everything...like everyone ran out for a fire drill in 1983 (it was actually '93), locked the doors and never returned. Great to see d/Mongo's bringing back the spark.

Yeah. "Defecation Alley" behind the Farwell Building is a real "must see" tourist stop.
  23. The phrase "A legend in his own mind" comes to mind. In any event, have at it.
  24. speaking of demolition in Detroit..... http://www.soapboxmedia.com/features/soapdishbehindthefence.aspx
