Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine: Development and News
The barrel-vaulted sub basement at Cintrifuse (1313 Vine) used to extend pretty far out. I heard they has to seal it off, but I saw a fairly recent photo that looked like it was still open. I guess we will see when they get a business operating down there. The floor was pretty sandy and there was a freaky white mold-like thing scaling the walls when I was in there, but that was a while ago. You can see it in the photo in this column, it si the area in the back through the arched door.http://www.soapboxmedia.com/features/55soapdishwhatliesbeneath.aspx

Cincinnati: Downtown: Terrace Plaza Hotel
This is a good thing. The property was sold in the state receivership to a qualified buyer who bought the debt held by the partners, who were shady, and had their own problematic bankruptcy case. So the Bankruptcy Court had to first bless this and now it can proceed in the receivership. My understanding is that the future owners have an appreciation for the history of the Terrace Plaza and are looking to renovate it accordingly.

John is correct. I spoke with Pat (a former longtime Enquirer reporter) on Monday night. In response to my question, he indicated that he was retained in the past two weeks or so. He didn't have much to say. And he wouldn't put it in an email.

Cincinnati: Bicycling Developments and News
This is a no good, very bad, HORRIBLE idea. 1. Bikes are the cleanest transport we have to cover greater than walking distances, any barrier to entry we put on them would discourage use and be bad for environment 2. Terrible idea from an equity/equality standpoint, bikes are also the cheapest transport other than walking. Would you really cite a poor person for an unlicensed bicycle? 3. Would create the insane dystopian situation of regulating bikes more than guns 4. From a libertarian standpoint why should the government regulate a low tech utilitarian device like a bicycle. Might as well force people to register a box of hand tools Sorry Sherman, first I said "heavy," then I started getting more annoyed as to how this all went down. My apologies. That said, I am not comfortable being filmed in isolated barren areas by strangers who do not identify themselves. I have run into some strange people down in that area, including people living there under overpasses. That, in and of itself, would have made a world of difference. I look forward to seeing clearer signage and security so we avoid any confusion in the future. I suspect it is being done now as I type.

Also, Sherman, nobody called the guy "fat." There was a "heavy" guy in a pick up truck filming people with his camera. Not saying anything. It was kind of creepy. He was not in any type of uniform or anything that would identify him with any particular railroad. Moreover if you continued reading you would have seen that the UBBC said they would not go in there in the future.

It seems some people want to make this more about themselves than anything else. Keep in mind that "Queensgate" is one of Cincinnati's 52 neighborhoods. It was created via urban renewal/removal. Relocating and demolishing one of our densest and most historic neighborhoods--primarily populated by poor African Americans. While the railroad now controls a large portion of it, they do not control it all. "Stay out of Queensgate" seems to imply otherwise. In the future I would suggest carefully identified boundaries indicating what is private property and what is not so people can avoid these issues in the future.

Hipsters
Out of the probably ten or so times I saw Black Flag live, Henry Rollins was with them only once as I recall. and as for the Discord/Fugazi scene, I lived in DC from '87-'93, and while their shows were good, the preachiness and pious attitude was particularly whiney and grating. Moreover they would often basically lock you in a place i.e. "no re-entry," in order to maintain the straight edge no drinking policy. I'll never forget the benefit I went to in an old sound stage in DC. Fugazi, Sonic Youth...bunch of bands. Only $5. And it started early on a Saturday. I went in only to discover no beer and no re-entry, and a bunch of speechifying on stage by "organizers." I had a huge headache within hours. It was worth it to leave and pound a 40 and pay another $5 rather than lay down on the floor in the fetal position while a guy from CISPES or something prattles on.

Those dirt patches devolved into a green, primordial ooze of algae runoff ponds as the summer wore on. They won't be missed. Now if Taft's Ale House would just get some much-needed racks.

Grandin is doing the property across the street into offices. The Ophthalmic Hospital was going for tax credits for a boutique hotel but they didn't get any. But yes, this block is poised for action. Hopefully the former Queen City Radio site will be able to obtain a parking variance from the city so they can use much of the outdoor space for a biergarten.
