UA Theatre Detroit - Must See
I did, but Zach didn't because he turned down the invite. I'll post some pics, but unfortunately there's only ones of the basement. We were coming up into the main lobby when the crew came in through the front entrance. At that point, we had to make our way up the tower, and then eventually to the roof of the theater. Because we were always trying to avoid them, so there was no time for taking pictures. I have a couple rushed ones I took when we were crossing over between the tower and theater. What I really should have done is video, since I had a 2Gb card in my camera.

South Euclid, Ohio: a low-profile mid-century suburb on the edge
Quite the mix of housing stock there. A few interesting ones too.

UA Theatre Detroit - Must See
Is this your idea of a sick joke Cincinnati kid? just joking. I'm afraid I had a really rough experience in there a couple days ago. I invited Zach here, but he turned it down, and thankfully he did. I went in with one other individual when a team of people came up to search and secure the building. We were pretty much running around this building for about an hour and a half until we sought refuge on one of the catwalks suspended above the theater. For 2 hours we sat still without saying a thing until they left. Unfortunately, they sealed, and locked us in the building. Getting out wasn't too smooth. Let's just say I got a few nasty cuts and the wind knocked out of me. Not fun at all. Oh, and P.S. Don't be fooled by those photos. It's not lit in there at all, even during the brightest time of day. The photographers who took those informed me they used exposure times up to 1.5 minutes. Not having a flashlight in this place will cause you to fall flat on your face.

Bridges across the world
Great pictures. I've never seen the Calatrava bridge up close before. Can you see below to the water? It looks like it has a glass deck.

What do you think of these names?
Okay good, I was thinking the same thing. But yeah it would be easier if we knew what your business was. It is hard picking a name. I remember when I was doing web design going to the county courthouse and registering myself as a business. I had completely forgotten I needed a name, and had to make one up on the spot.

Hey Summit Street! Try and top this....
Bad them. I always thought it would be cool to do a statewide tour in a day if possible in Michigan. Unfortunately, it's a 10 hour drive from Ann Arbor to Ironwood, MI. It would take less time to go to NYC, and I'd rather go there instead of some unpopulated mining town.

It's too drunk to be this early! - late-breaking news
Witnessing these kinds of accidents is incredibly strange. My sophomore year of college, my friend and I witnessed a drunk driving incident where two people were racing on a major boulevarded street outside my residence hall. It was 1:30 a.m on a freezing snowy Februray night so the roads were really slippery. They were rounding the bend on this street (1 car on the correct side of the median, the other on the wrong side), when the first car lost control, hit median curb, flipping his car upside down into the other car. It sent that car out of control, where he hit a light standard and then slammed into the concrete pier of a pedestrian bridge. The force shook the bridge, knocking one of the globe street lamps off the post, missing what would be the third witness of the incident. It was the craziest chain reaction accident I've ever seen in my life. (probably the only one I'll ever see). Both drivers survived with only a few scratches, but their vehicles were totaled. When we ran to the guy that crashed into the bridge, all he wanted to do was leave, but we couldn't get him out of the car, because the door was stuck. We weren't trying to help him get away, but we could smell gas, and figured we should help him get out of the car. The guy in the car that rolled over was just wandering in circles in the middle of the street. I had to testify in court later that summer. I never got to hear what charges were brought against them though. However, the police did mail images of the scene to me prior to the court case. I'll see if I can dig them up and scan them.

New York City: Developments and News
I remember being in this part of Brooklyn, and recalling that the immediate surrounding buildings weren't all that tall. I'm concerned about the scale of this. I kind of expected this from Gehry. Although, the buildings on the edges look they were bought form Gehry at discount. Not really a big fan of this project.

Of course it's being built in Dubai. This one of those things I'd love to see built, just not here in America.

Merry Christmas from Urban Ohio
I didn't ask for anything this year so my parents gave me the cash equivalent of what my sister got: a new digital camera. They tossed in a few extras though. A 2 gb memory card for my camera, a couple SAM's club sized packs of AA batteries (coldayman knows why) and a few gift certificates. I'm actually going to use the money from my parents for a new camera. However, it covers barely 1/3 of the cost of the camera I want. However, my friend had broken the manual settings butten on my current camera which is covered by insurance. If it gets replaced near to full value, then I should have enough. I'm also using my iTunes gift certificate with the new iPod I will be getting since my 1 year old video iPod is acting up, but is covered under warranty for replacement. Merry Christmas and happy holidays from my family to yours!

Livingston County, MI
Great photos Zach. They stopped loading for me at Hamburg no matter how many times I refreshed, but from what I can see, Livingston has a few nice small towns. I pass through this county whenever I go back home to Saginaw from Ann Arbor. I've only been to one town, which was brighton. The rest I'm passing at 80 mph on US-23. Unfortunately this is the most boring part of my journey home, that by the time I reach Tyrone township, I need to stop and get some coffee.

Detroit's Tallest Abandoned Building + Skyline
Well, it was taken on a Sunday evening, during twighlight. I agree that's it's no excuse to not turn on the lights for show, but part of it has to do with my photography in that many of them just didn't show up except for the blaring atrium of the Compuware building. the GM building is usually lit up like crazy any other day. Almost every single floor is lit everytime I drive by. It's a bit more spotty with the older buildings. A lot of them don't offer class A office space, so they lease to small businesses who pay their own electrical bills. When no one is in the office (like on a Sunday), the lights are off. I have photos from this same location that show the city all lit up nicely, but my camera at that time wasn't that great, and I didn't have a tripod so they are all blurry. But I think Detroit can do better with its lighting. Hopefully that will come when the Michigan economy improves. EDIT Found one: Not bad for a struggling city on a Sunday night. A few of the darkest buildings are vacant. Again, sorry for the poor quality.

Cincinnati & "That School Up North"
^ It's a virgin vault. clvlndr, I guess we have different ways in which we view/define architecture and urban spaces. When I think corporate/industrial office parks, I picture faceless post-modern buildings and parking. Not this: I'm not going to argue that a few exist, like the UgLi as you mentioned, but they engage the surroundings in an urban context. So does every other building on campus. Like many campuses, there are a few rotten apples, like the buildings I mentioned earlier. But there are very few in comparison to the rest of the university. Keep in mind U of M was flat broke when the diag was built, so not every structure could be like the law quad. Some of greater buildings such as the West Physics Building, Economics Building, Haven Hall, and Mason Hall all burned down and were replaced with "buildings of their time." That means we were stuck with ugly modernist garbage that architects of that time praised. I'm just happy that U of M realized a change needed to be made in recent years and these buildings were either demolished or renovated. Their replacements may not be collegiate gothic or Beaux Arts but I think they are pretty good compared to the trash other universities put up. Just look at MSU, sheesh. But speaking of expensive buildings, our newest residence hall will begin construction soon: http://www.ns.umich.edu/htdocs/releases/story.php?id=3060

The Worst US Map Ever
Maybe I didn't zoom in close enough, but it appears as if almost Michigan has Chicago. But then again what the hell is Michigan on that map.
