^ Good you aren't hurt, but that would be annoying. I remember once a lawyer gave me his card after I got doored by a driver. I got a small scrape on my knee and the bike was fine, sheesh I'm not going to sue.

Eating Out
I've realized I haven't cooked a meal in a very long time at my apartment. My fridge is completely empty except for water, beer, milk, and orange juice. Anyone else around here eat out alot? No worries, I'm 5'10 and 180-185, with normal blood pressure lol. I could probably lose a bit more, but since I walk everywhere and do intense bike workouts, I keep the weight off. Awihle back, I created a roster of food places within a 5 minute walk of my office. This came out of another thread where you can draw a box on yelp to tell you all the restaurants in your area. Feel free to share yours. Here's my five minute walk zone. The number indicate that there are several of the same restaurant in my area 2 Corner Bakery Cafe 2 Mezza Mediterranean 2 McDonalds 2 Halsted Deli 3 Potbelly 1 Qdoba 1 Chipotle 1 Cosi 1 Sopraffina 1 Hannah's Bretzel 2 Wao Bao 1 Burrito Beach 1 Delmonica 1 Houlihans 1 Japan Food Express 1 Noodles & Co. 1 Jimmy Johns 1 Johnny Rockets 1 Sweetwater 1 Khyber Pass 1 Stetsons 2 Subway 1 Sixty Five Chinese 1 Hoyts 1 South Water Kitchen 1 Emerald Loop 1 Brian's Deli 1 Einstein Bagel 1 The Southern Mac and Cheese Store 1 Elephant Castle 1 CaffeCafe 1 Catch 35 1 Cibbo Matto 1 Pie Guys 1 Sixteen 1 Cityfront plaza food court 1 The Purple Pig 1 Michael Jordan Steakhouse 1 Coast Burger 1 Typhoon Sushi 1 Billy Goat Tavern 1 Chick-cago Grill 1 Habanero Baja Grill 1 Popeyes 2 Panda Express 1 Giordanos Pizza Not restaurants, but yelp included them 1 Dunkin Donuts 3 Starbucks 1 Argo 2 Cafe Descartes List of places I go to further from my office. Detroit: Packard
I know right? The complex is so large, it could practically be a city of itself. Unfortunately, the neighborhood is pretty awful and the reinforcement within the concrete can no longer tolerate the mere dead loads of the floor. Much of it isn't even reinforced but steel beams with block infill encased in concrete. Some of the floors have already begun collapsing. Demolition and reconstruction of the factory, exactly as was would be cheaper. As Sherman points out, I don't think this one is going anywhere too soon.

So everything went well. My mom cleaned of course. Found the dust under the bed. But it was good relaxing weekend.

So the parents are in town tomorrow. They only come to Chicago about twice a year, but the few days before I'm always cleaning my apartment like I've never before. Dousing things in bleach, windex, dishsoap, whatever. Usually my place is "decent clean." At least clean to the eye when guests come over, and the washroom is cleaned and disinfected once a week. But I tend to leave stuff out. Beer bottles may sit on the counter for a couple days. I'll dust off shelves maybe once a month, when really it should be every other week. However, my mom is very fastidious. She'll notice dust behind the bed, the disorganized area beneath the sink, a crumb beneath the fridge....and then she'll start cleaning. That's usually when more often than not, an argument begins. I'll tell they are on vacation, but no, moms gotta clean. I took all the crap I couldn't organize and sort and threw them in a closet, which I then locked. That was at least half the battle. Wish me luck.

That's HORSE SH!T. Not your point, but how employers can get away with screwing you over like that. Lucky for me, I had a record of all the times I got paid by them. A lot of people might not keep record of their pay, making it even harder or impossible to dispute. They must have been banking on that, or apathy on my part. Corporations get away with so much more than employees can, it seems. If I lied and kept making claims each week after the 5th week, saying that I was unemployed when in fact I was, then according to the website, I have a 9 out of 10 chance of being audited and would face criminal prosecution and would have to pay it back. I think if they pull that stunt again they'll get in trouble. No unemployment office wants to go through all the paper work for dispute resolution. They just need to settle the matter. However if this is repeatedly happening, yes they could get in trouble for fraud. Why else are employers required to put up those posters in the break room that say "Know your rights"

The "Apple Macintosh" Discussion Thread
If you think non-Apple electronics products aren't also produced in slave-labor factories, I've got a bridge to sell you. Many of them are produced in the exact same factories as Apple products, but of course, it's fashionable to single out Apple while ignoring every other company that employs the same labor practices. Obviously I'm not naive enough to believe that it's only Apple using cheap Chinese labor, but that's not really the point. The point is that Apple charges enough for these products that they should and could be made of higher quality materials and with better conditions for workers, as Apple would lead you to believe is the case. Say nothing of the progressive-minded nature of a chunk of Apple's costumer base that should feel especially betrayed by these revelations. In summation, Apple is different here because of the nature of the company and the people that keep it in business. I don't understand the comments about Apple hardware being low quality or "so-so with good marketing". Compare the iMac, Mac Pro, or MacBook Air to any desktop or laptop on the market today. Dell, HP, Acer, and other PC manufactures are essentially in a "race to the bottom" to see who can build the cheapest machines out of the cheapest plastic. Apple hardware is actually built to last and will retain its value for years. Meanwhile HP and Dell are trying to get out of the PC business because as they race to the bottom, there is less profit to be made. I've had my iMac for 3 years and nothing has required replacemt or repair. My parents have a 4 year old iMac that hasn't had problems either. I haven't even refreshed my hard drive or upgraded my OS because there haven't been any performance issues. For the first time ever I may be able to sell my computer for once. I really think its an issue of Windows destroying the hardware. When I run windows on my Mac it demands more resources for running the same programs than iOS. Windows 7 was a big step up, but I think Microsoft is scarred by Vista which has to go down as the worst operating system in history. I certainly hope no one is using it.

Pet Peeves!
Cord Violation again!!! Walking back to my place from a bar and there's an extension cord hanging out a third floor window of my building plugged into an electric car. No...no..no!!! I mean, I'm all for electric vehicles, but nearly all the garages in the city have EV charging spaces. And another pet peeve, I tried to photograph the said extension cord, but my phone HD is full. Deleted a few videos, yet it still wouldn't let me take a photo. Damnit apple!!!

Pet Peeves!
No which why I complained about wires crossing aisles. All vehicles have them near the end seats and some in the center.

Pet Peeves!
There are electric outlets on Chicago subways? There is. Take a look under the seat. (if you dare, lol!).
-
Pet Peeves!
People that charge / plug in their electronics on the subway and let the cords dangle across the aisle. At least sit in a seat above an outlet. Same goes with stations. If people abuse this by creating a trip hazard, they're just going to put locks on all the plugs.

I find that hard to believe it's leaning. Deep caissons will go down to bedrock. They travel a long distance (a couple hundred feet) typically so there is enough force in all directions to keep the caisson stable...thus it's unlikely crushing forces or distress from neighboring structures is sufficient enough to damage the foundation. Any displacement that could possibly happen would be limited to the superstructure....and if that was the case, you'd be hearing it from a legitimate source. But settling is a real issue that occurs in all cities and sometimes larger, mostly low to midrise pre-war buildings, but the methods of piling / slab foundations back then were pretty inferior to what we have today.

Chicago: Developments and News
Jeffinmichigan first off, where are you from? Though I reside in Chicago. I'm originally from Saginaw, and I work for a Michigan based company in Chicago, but I split my time between Detroit and Chicago. Always good to see other Michigan folks here. As far as the K-station project, only the garage will extend over I-94. The project is not allowed to come in contact with the freeway cap or retaining walls. The garage will have to cantilever over. I'm not certain if they actually bought air rights or not. The viceroy project was first proposed by Mayor Daley's Administration with Emanuel's following through. The building can be found here: http://g.co/maps/a6apd La Casa is a dorm in the Pilsen neighborhood It's right at the Pink Line 18th station. An older bulding occupied the site, but had some major problems and needed to be torn down. Pilsen is a historic district, so if buildings come down, it's for a very good reason. http://g.co/maps/s9z92 You a correct, twin hotels and AMIL are right by the Criminal courts building. I hope to have the names of the actual hotels, but I don't know that right now. As for the surface lots, near the church, I'm not sure yet what plans are. These I believe are owned by Holy Name Cathedral. This is actually my church, I've been meaning to ask. I know the church hopes to develop these lots eventually but are waiting for the right time. I hope they wait. This isn't the right time to sell.

Places you are traveling to
^ I think you meant to say 60 HOURS in advance. A flight from Chicago to Los Angeles for the weekend leaving this Friday evening costs $229 round trip, all fees and taxes included. A flight leaving 60 DAYS from now to the same place for a weekend costs slightly more...probably because of nicer weather, but not by much. Point is, the amount of time you schedule in advance has very little or nothing at all to do with the cost of a flight leaving Chicago. Whether you do it a few days or months and advance the price will still be the same. The only exception is scheduling a last minute flight before a major holiday. Tack on $50-100. What matters is the time you select with morning and afternoon flights being the most expensive. The most I ever paid for a flight out of O'Hare was $400 round trip nonstop to Los Angeles leaving at 7:45 pm. I wish I didn't have to pay that, but it's was scheduled la couple days before 4th of July weekend.

California Dreamin'
Right over by city hall....or "Olde Downtown" along Main...where the locals shop and the tourists don't. But Santa Monica is big. Living 5-6 blocks from the promenade is close to downtown. I'm sorry but how is the Santa Monica Bus system a pain? It's pretty damn straightforward. I can understand having problems on LA Metro buses since it's a huge system, but a smaller municipal bus system will always take you to the major spots, or at least back home where you started no matter how bad you mess up. The drivers are always very courteous and helpful too if you need to know where to get off.

Detroit- La Vogue Square apartment renovation
Well it's actually adapted art deco to moorish style. Art deco was in full force when these were built. The two styles work together perfectly. I miss those iconic Alhambra arches at my old place.

Palmer Park has great buildings. Lots of Moorish influence. I lived in a building of identical style when I was in Ann Arbor
