Chicago: Developments and News
Yeah this has been a huge debated issue. There's a small minority group of us that think Chicago allows waaaay too much parking. It's the reason Chicago is one of the largest auto-oriented cities in the US. I'll admit to being a bit hypocritical since I have, and will probably own a car here in the future. But once you get used to the way the system works, it's very easy to own a car here and drive around the city.

Looks like Walmart will be opening their next store inside the 3-story The Recycled Paper Greetings Building on Chicago's Northside. http://g.co/maps/3ddgv Renderings of the Ravenswood Station Plan. Lots of commercial, but the residential tower was ditched due to large enough community opposition. Lame. http://www.centersquarejournal.com/news/ravenswood-station-developers-to-discuss-plans-thursday

^ Well you have your Kroger Tower. And just look at the beast of a parking podium. You know Chicagoans love their free parking when they shop Another new development I stumbled across. Conversion of The Fulton Market Cold Storage Building into an office building. I'm aware not everyone is happy with the de-industrialization of Carroll Ave into yuppie central. But it's a delicate balancing act of keeping the grit while some of these companies move to areas outside the downtown, closer to where their employees live and in more modern facilities. Here you see the cold storage building in the background behind some converted industrial buildings Photos by me

Chicago: Developments and News
^ I was actually looking at renting a loft a block down a couple years ago, but was discouraged by the fact that there was no transit stop close enough, despite the El passed right by. Well...it's getting built now. I'm sure that loft has been rented by now. New streeterville tower. I like it! Images from Curbed Chicago. Read more here: http://chicago.curbed.com/archives/2011/11/10/david-hoveys-streeterville-debut.php Currently an empty site with double decked street access. Directly North of it is the Ronald McDonald house tower which is finishing up exterior construction.

Ohio Beard and Mustache Championship?!?! I need to enter that and showcase my fabulous sunnah beard. I've had a few people say I look like a terrorist. >:D The more, the merrier. more info here: http://beardteamohio.com/Events.php Original Thing 1 is trying to get me to do the Movember campaign. One of my employees is taking part of that. I asked if he planned to donate, which he looked at me clueless. I hope this isn't turning into those I'll do it for the hell of it, but without a cause kind of things. It's like those parties someone invites you to, and then a few hours in you get a form stuck in front of you asking for your name and address and amount you plan to pledge, not having any sort of warning as to what you are getting involved in lol. I was also busy all week / waking up a little late, so not really do any shaving. Someone asked if I was participating. I said, no I'm just lazy.

Historic Preservation: A Criminal Offense
He'll eventually win. This is why so many intelligent cities have extremely strict laws regarding building permits. As complicated and annoying as they are to obtain, they are there to protect owners and the public and regulate efficient and well planned construction activity. Now it's just a bunch of people pointing fingers.

^ On a related note, I work in an office building with many, many tenants. Some of them consulates, publishing giants, etc. Someone is not always happy and standing outside with a sign (on rare occasion) . Walking out of the building, they just assume you are affiliated and jam a sign in your face or yell at you, even though you might be clueless as to what they are upset about. Always of course, when you are on the phone. One time there was cops nearby, and one of the activists brushed against a guy coming out the door (it looked by accident) and immediately the cops rushed on him. I can only imagine when the G8 summits come to town. I hope they happen nowhere near downtown, but they probably will.

Chicago, November 2011 - Amtrak, CTA, Millennium Park, and a little of Pilsen
Great set Rob! Pilsen is one of my favorite neighborhoods. It represents more of the authentic Chicago neighborhoods with the lack of new construction, high immigrant population, mom and pop stores, great architecture, and community feel. I love it the way it is. Oh and Union station platforms now have a ceiling above them! For awhile, you'd look up and just see sky. They finished rebuilding the roof fast!

Morgan Street Green and Pink line infill station to serve the Fulton Market Neighborhood. K-Station City / Fulton River District...another new residential highrise part of this huge complex of buildings. The Kennedy expressway runs beneath where that giant drill bit is sitting.

I've decided Bing Maps should get into historical preservation. Their maps are so incredibly out of date, they provide a great historical resource for now and thens. I looked at some vintage aerial photography in birds eye of my neighborhood back before many towers went up. I've been able to date them to about August of 2005. Not surprising for Microsoft. They are always behind

You need to call or visit your local post office with a piece of mail so that the PO Manager can stop it from being sorted to the carriers route (the 4 digit number after your zip) Apparently the 4 digit number is only my floor in my building. Never knew that. Thanks for the advice.

I've lived at my address for over 2 years now. I still get quite a bit of mail from the previous tenant. I write return to sender, but that doesn't stop. Though the number has dropped off Anyone have this problem. I'm tired of it. According to USPS, you can't throw the mail in recycling. Guess I'll have to keep writing return to sender. This is getting very annoying.

The "Apple Macintosh" Discussion Thread
Yeah, the Photoshop APP tends to be deceiving. The originals were much more balanced. But then again, I always tend to oversaturate my photos a bit. That park now has bright artificial lighting at night with TopShop/TopMan's blazing bright facade that replaced the old Borders.

The "Apple Macintosh" Discussion Thread
Here's a couple photos I shot in non-HDR format on my 4s. The phone does a good job with light balance...actually surprisingly well, very much on par with my Nikon DSLR. I immediately took them into photoshop for iphone and upped the contrast a bit, and then posted it to flickr. All while walking a single city block. Absolutely how much smart phones have improved over the past decade. I cranked the contrast up to 75 on this one lol

Jackson, Michigan
They were banks and needed the office space. At the time, there was probably a lot less room downtown to build. Plus the idea of building a trophy building for attention was an attractive idea. When you think about the space the elevators and stairs take, there isn't as much office space as one might think. Having the one building converted to city hall worked out well. It's a very departmentalized public facility which works well on separate floors.
