Heh? I have T1 internet in my apartment, but I feel like it's dial-up when I come to this site. At moments this site will improve marginally. But it definitely takes forever to get in from the splash / front page thing, or load up the main forum page in general. No problems elsewhere on the internet.
  2. Yeah the resurfacing was a really big deal. The pavement along Michigan Ave had some major potholes and areas around drains were actually collapsing. Since the resurfacing, my commute time by bike has actually improved.
  3. Here's a few shots I took and photoshopped on my iphone. I think i'm going to go crazy taking photos with the camera on the 4s
  4. ^ In '06 it was in perfect shape. In '07, there was plenty of vandalism and copper theft, but not to the degree many other buildings experienced. Had the building not been left wide open for an entire summer, it would have been serviceable at any time. It's a shame parking is almost a necessary component. But if the people mover remained in service, garage sharing among buildings wouldn't be a problem, especially since the people mover is directly accessible to the Whitney. But not reason to think too much over it. The building is getting renovated anyway. And one of the conditions of a loan they received is to reconstruct the facade as it appeared the day it was built. Today it looks pretty awful: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Detroit,+MI&ll=42.335885,-83.050125&spn=0.001814,0.00383&hnear=Detroit,+Wayne,+Michigan&gl=us&t=h&z=19&vpsrc=6&layer=c&cbll=42.335885,-83.050125&panoid=FpJ12Kz0VoZjGI8M1phx5g&cbp=12,223.2,,0,-29.31 It's a shame to think of what architects did back in the 60's to "modernize" buildings. Glad they plan to restore it back to its original grandeur.
  5. Recent video about the 95th Dan Ryan stop on the red line. http://thesixthward.blogspot.com/2011/10/video-state-of-95dan-ryan.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+TheSixthWard+%28The+Sixth+Ward%29&utm_content=Google+Reader One of the people interviewed mentions the red line extension. More info on that here. http://www.transitchicago.com/assets/1/planning/Red_Line_Extension_UPRR_LPA.pdf It would service (somewhat) the historic Pullman neighborhood. Most people are probably surprised by the stop at 130th, but I guess there must be big plans for Lake Calumet

Here it is. I took this back in 2006 from the office of the mayor...which is just as cool as the view. Thanks ink for the tour!
  7. It's actually not far from K-town just East of there. As you move closer towards California you hit most of these buildings. The consistency in rowhouse architecture is much more prevelant in East Garfield Park, particularly along Warren Ave. You'll find similar architecture around Bronzeville, Grand Blvd, and Oakland but it's much more eroded due to population loss as well as teardown-rebuilds during the mid 2000's

First off, I don't want you to interpret the post to follow as me being rude, but I didn't see it so much as a bash, rather one of ignorance. Living in both cities, I find the comparison to Detroit incorrect, and at least with my experiences in Cleveland, completely night and day as well. Different demographics, Detroit's being almost completely majority black. And foreign born residents? Hardly close, in fact both Detroit and Cleveland have seen recent population shares in the low single digits, practically half of the national average. You are correct that Chicago is similar to Cleveland in relationship to population loss, but certainly not Detroit. Since you mention this in reference to global city status, this needs to be clarified. Educated grads are moving from other states or countries while the historic middle to low class is leaving because of fewer opportunities in manufacturing and production. In fact the biggest losses were from neighborhoods historically tied to this type of labor. But from a global city standpoint an educated workforce is growing here because the city is one of the top financial centers in the world. Unfortunately, it goes without saying that the biggest problems in global cities are great disparities between its wealthy center cities and forgotten manufacturing labor force. This is inherent of most midwestern cities (yes like Detroit and Cleveland) but certainly not to the level they've experienced. With the demographics clarification out of the way, certainly art, music, and creativity persist in these cities, but it persists in every city...and yes in a greater number the bigger the population. It also exists on the west coast and east coast in large amount. It's easy to sit back and say "X place is not the creative mecca people make it out to be" Against what? If you are used to the cultural institutions out on the East Coast, and are able to explore them with easy convenience. But no one can make that judgement unless they've lived or visited that place frequently. Maybe it's just my attitude about cities in general. I don't like to judge places unless I really deeply explore them. My personal opinions of what a place has had to offer have been skewed before until I've made that 12th visit and really saw something different that changed my perspective, but I rarely talk about it. If I do, it's very specific, and not a general sweeping statement. I didn't want to be defensive at all in this discussion but I guess I was. Again, I respect your post and please correct me if you feel I've interpreted anything wrong.
  9. Here's some pictures over the years of East Garfield Park. I also made it out to the long abandoned Original Sears Tower left over from when the massive complex behind it was demolished. The tower is being renovated into a community center

LOL, I don't care what Chicagoans think of places since I'll always consider myself a Michigander. But I don't think too much about comparisons or what city is more cultural. As long as I'm happy that's all I care about. At the end of the day, I absolutely love this city. The same way I loved Detroit for many different reasons that I'm sure plenty of folks will never understand. Honestly, I think people that complain about places not being cultural enough are the ones lacking it in their own lives. You can find racial and ethnic diversity, art and music almost anywhere, even Middle of nowhere USA. What more do you want? All the cities in this conversation boast quite a bit of cultural diversity and vibrancy if you know where to look....I'll give you a clue.. it's not the Loop, River North, Lincoln Park or Wrigleyville. Same to be said about other cities. And while the slices within the demographics pie grow in some areas and shrink in others, populations are all a plurality, foreign born residents hang around 20-30%, and there's more festivals and cultural institutions in each of these cities you could ever be capable of going to. Save the comparisons for Forbes. I had to hear enough of it when I lived in Detroit.

Please feel free to stop by and shop. Leave the riff (cough) aj93 (cough) raff at home! If you noticed its Centre, not center. Meaning we don't do sale nor are you our customer base! LOLOL I like when Barney's does the Warehouse sales. The customer base is completely different..which basically includes me

An LG phone, but all my apps are on an ipod touch. the itouch is 60 GB where my new iphone is only 32, so I will continue to use the itouch extensively. I need to do this icloud thing. Or will my apps just automatically go over to my iphone??? I just sat down in front of my computer and all of sudden all the devices just started "talking to each other" lol What about my computer at work? The itunes library has different music, but the same apple ID

Finally got my iphone 4s at work today!! Now I just got to transfer over my music and apps. And go buy a case for it.
  14. Thanks guys, I had a great time this weekend. Just got back to Chicago and starting to upload pics.
  15. Alright I'm coming. Because of Eastern/Central time difference. I'm going to have to get up early1

The samsung tab 10.1 is much better in my opinion. This is what I'd get second to the ipad, or equal to it at least. I tried the samsung galaxy at the mall and liked it, but I couldn't really put one device over the other. Though I thought the "this device can go to flash websites"comment was kind of unnecessary. Yes...because it's 2006, right? Most web designers know flash is well on it's way out. It would be absolutely silly to do a flash website nowadays.
  17. Thinking about it. I could probably hop a morning megabus to Cincy. Chris call me
  18. Chicago has a major spider problem and I don't know what's up with it. They are sizeable and build these huge complex webs in all the windows. All my windows usually have webs in the summer. They never come inside, so it's fine to open the windows, but at least the pest problem here is 0 since they are basically the building's first line of defense against other insects.
  19. Yeah Milwaukee is necessary. In my opinion it has the best warehouse district in the midwest. ---that photo tour coming soon.
  20. Great tour. I've been around this area before. I'm still very impressed by White Plains.
  21. When the store was under construction, I don't think anyone expected that it would come out looking so good. The grand stair and decorate glass windows are stunning. I've heard rumors the Barney's Co-op in Lincoln Park is moving to State Street and I'm going to guess or suggest, the old Loehmanns space. Either that or B37 Thanks for the great comments everyone. I really like Chicago, but I do miss Michigan from time to time. My company has allowed me to split some time once and awhile between our Detroit and Chicago offices so that I can go back home and see family and friends.
  22. Um...thats some advanced planning! I need to start saving now , its part of a muti-state Amtrak trip cross country. Cleveland - 2 days Chicago - 3 days Minneapolis - 2 days Portland - 2 days Seattle - 2 days Vancouver - 3 days I met a couchsurfer in my apartment elevator that was doing a cross country Amtrak trip to various cities. I wish I could do something like that. He was basically taking the trip before he started his new job, and was doing it on the cheap. Free places to stay, and most of the places he was provided a meal as well. If anyone is ever looking for a real cheap place to stay in Chicago, the HostelingInternational place on Congress is very nice. Only a few people per room (very big rooms) and each rooms has its own private bathroom. I stayed there once before I moved here and it was $22. For cheap nice hotels the Allerton always has specials, but the catch is their parking is extremely expensive. But taking a train or bus makes it not an issue Sutton Place is a luxury hotel that will occasionally run steep discount offers when rooms a reserved within a particular time frame and non-refundable. It's definitely worth it, and all the rooms have a view. http://www.chicago.suttonplace.com/hotel_offers.htm
  23. In 2009 I moved to Chicago. Every year I plan to move out of downtown and into one of the neighborhoods but I can never seem to do it. Signed the lease again a couple months ago. However, my office will be moving down the street to bigger space, so some new vantage points are to come this year. Great place for a happy hour drink, the bar with the best view is at the Hancock building. I never wake up early enough for sunrises, but if I stay up all night I can. Rooftop morning coffee's are done for the season Some rooftops cooler than others In case you are in the market for pricier commodities just off Michigan Ave... New school I worked on in Back-of-the-Yards, Chicago Cladding Some buildings die And others rise Veteran Groupon? Gold Coast Gold Coast where the buildings are made of gold And buildings are high in the clouds Almost a grand union City of Light Old photo from 2007. Everything in the foreground....gone. It's all towers now.

Does it have anything to do with the unstable soil? No, gentrification. Beautiful old architecture knocked down and replaced with crappy 4 story condos.

Thanks, unfortunately good now and thens showing the same building are difficult to come by. Chicago tends to demolish a tremendous amount of buildings and historic preservation is pretty weak here.
