If I was a landlord, I wouldn't trust my tenants with even watering the grass. (New forum bug, can't get quick reply to work in google chrome)
  2. Wow, I haven't seen a famous famiglia in ages. There was one in Ann Arbor, MI but was underperforming and eventually replaced.

Thanks for finding that CBC. It's quite the refreshing experience after being in the office all day of getting on a bike riding home and a great wake-up when heading to work. Even days when I haven't gotten much sleep, the bike ride really helps.

LOL, I've wondered what cities enforce that. My parent's town has the same ordinance which was enacted in 1996. 15 years later, the town has never issued a single ticket despite that skateboarding and bike riding on sidewalks downtown is still very popular.

I think about 80% of the population is unqualified for having a pet. My theory is if you own a pet, there's probably a good chance you are unqualified. It think it's unfortunate that people go to work and leave their pet home alone for almost 10 hours a day. If you have kids or a family member that stays at home with them, then that's perfect, a whole a different story. FYI, I'm not qualified to own a pet. My apartment is only 680 square feet, I live in a highrise, and I'm gone on weekdays between 8:30 a.m and 6:00 pm, and out and about most weekends. It wouldn't be fair to an animal.
  6. Very cool. Ignoring the ugly church, can this type of housing stock be found around the city? I feel like I'd expect more of your typical great lakes frame houses in Cleveland. For example, in Detroit finding this type of housing (even historically) would be rare.

Thanks for the photos. The wide sidewalk with trees are nice. Makes the streetscape so much more pleasant.

My job involves infrastructure design in various countries out in the middle east. All of these projects are implementing robust environmental sustainability measures. I'd like to see such practices implemented at a similar caliber here in the U.S. Though in some cities like Chicago, they already are being implemented.
  9. Nexis4Jersey, I am really enjoying your threads. These are an excellent collection of photos. Keep the photos coming!

Really? you don't understand their frustration with being consistently told that their city is garbage? They shouldn't be sensitive to depictions around the world as nothing but bombed out buildings? "jokes" about Iraq being a better destination than their home shouldn't bother them? i mean, i think Detroiters have every right to be pissed about that. I think people in that city have every right to having a chip on their shoulder. They're the ones left behind to pick up the mess. I'm sensitive about this topic...i was born there and lived there most of grade school. I grew up in the same house my mother did on the east side. we moved to the suburbs (inner ring) and Detroit was always a stone's throw away. Your sensitivity is purely personal and not representative of Detroiters as a whole. I should have not said all "Detroiter's" actually because there are a great number of people who do appreciate the photography of their city (blight, no blight) and an even greater number who simply don't care and have their own hobbies to worry about. As I said, it's poeple's personal interest in the architecture of these buildings. I've taken well over 10,000 photos of what people may refer to as "blight and abandonment" in the city, except that I call it Architecture. I don't use my work to exploit the city since I've never sold or tried to sell these photos. They are for my own interests and documented experience. If people choose the opposite and intend to use them in an ill manner, then shame on them. But I know most photographers are not like that. BTW, I find the relationship between the last sentence of each of your paragraphs quite ironic.
  11. Got a friend who lives here, but I haven't been there in awhile. Oddly, it's always reminded me of parts of Chicago's south loop. Great set!

Right now Detroiters are fuming about ruin porn. They are tired of it being in the spotlight. I kind of disagree with the whole "stop taking pictures of blight and start taking pictures of good stuff." Photography is a personal interest and art. The public can't tell people what they should photograph or criticize the work just because they find abandoned buildings to be offensive. When you step back and look at it, the vacant buildings are what bring thousands of foreign tourists to the city who will purchase hotel rooms, and eat at local restaurants. I'd say the photography has helped Detroit. It's sparked interest for artists to move there and has provided a backdrop for movie making. For the Detroit residents that are frustrated with all the ruin porn photography. Either get your city to fix the buildings or move to another city if you can't stand it.

I thought this was interesting. Detroit 1-8-7 has an episode where a body is discovered frozen in ice at the bottom of an elevator shaft, found by urban explorers. Not really fiction, it actually happened a couple years ago. Kind of creepy The episode: Hulu - Detroit 1-8-7: Ice Man/Malibu - Watch the full episode now. The actual story: http://detnews.com/article/20090128/METRO08/901280491/Frozen-in-indifference--Life-goes-on-around-body-found-in-vacant-warehouse
  14. Nice! Glad to see some midtown shots. I'm sad this building burned down and has been demolished:

I can't stand it when people wear too much cologne or perfume. What are they trying to cover up. Passed this dude on the street that came out of the entrance of my building. A whole trail stank behind him. Sidewalk, vestibule, lobby, and elevator. I'm glad no one in my office is guilty of this.

That sucks. I certainly hope I don't see any of this 5 years down the road in Chicago. We've had some of these concrete hulks sitting around unfinished since 2008. There was one project I seem to remember in Monterey, CA that was under construction in 1994. I eventually returned in 2006 to find the same site had not progressed any futher, but was a weed filled concrete basement with unfinished columns and rusted rebar.

LOL, look at the numbers for people paid while on urbanohio.
  18. Guy talking too loud on his cellphone at crosswalk Michigan and Wacker drives "And then he threw up....HE THREW UP.....and it was like chunky peanut butter." oh nice thank you.
  19. That's really sad. Do you think there's any way they can capitalize on the history? I think of the once abandoned hulks of mines and their ancillary structures that have been rehabbed into museums, retail and restaurants in Michigan's UP

At the mall today, they were playing this video in the food court. Listened to it quite a bit back in grad school, but had never seen the video. Got me all hyped about Cincinnati this weekend.

I think I can still make it to work this morning though we are getting a freebie vacation day, which I can save for another time. I shall use it to visit Ohio this weekend!!

Snapped this photo of my window that failed under the wind. Pushed it in, and as I took the photo a lightning strike outside :-o There's some interesting photos in the Chicago Tribune of people who have abandoned their bus and walking down what looks like Lakeshore Drive, which is currently off limits to the public until later notice.

Well, this storm is definitely believable in Chicago now. Let me tell you downtown by the lake it's absolutely violent. I attempted to walk home because at first it wasn't bad. When I reached Water Tower Place, I discovered what a horrible decision I had made. People were falling over and sitting in doorways. They simply couldn't make it home because the wind shears and piercing freezing rain was so intense. The streets here are empty. Nobody is driving, and every single store and restaurant is closed. Definitely the worst snowstorm so far I've experienced in my lifetime.
  24. The control cities are strange. First of all heading south on I-94 It says Memphis and Indiana. I think historically there used to be Detroit listed as a control city but it was removed. The rest of the signs just say "Loop, Western Suburbs, Wisconsin, and St Louis." You really don't see any mention of Milwaukee until further down the Kennedy. I always wondered if Chicago was trying to be insulting or something. This freeway to all of Indiana...whatever is there! (No offense rob, I love your state). If I were to rework them: SB 90/94 divergence. Detroit | Toledo | SKYWAY , Detroit | Memphis | RYAN EXPY SB 90/94 Reunion. Detroit, Toledo SB 94/57 Divergence. Detroit | Michigan City | BISHOP FORD EXPY, Champaign | Memphis NB 55/90/94 St Louis | LSD | STEVENSON, Chicago Loop | Milwaukee | KENNEDY EXPY NB 290/90/94 Western Suburbs | Chicago Loop | EISENHOWER EXPY | CONGRESS SPUR, Milwaukee | KENNEDY EXPY Commas represent separate signs

Man am I ever glad I'm 13 stories up From the national weather service: .. LAKESHORE FLOOD WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM TUESDAY EVENING THROUGH WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON... A LAKESHORE FLOOD WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM TUESDAY EVENING THROUGH WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON. NORTHEAST WINDS WILL INCREASE TO 30 TO 40 MPH WITH GUSTS OF 50 TO 60 MPH POSSIBLE. THESE STRONG WINDS WILL LIKELY RESULT IN WAVES BUILDING TO 14 TO 18 FT... WITH OCCASIONAL WAVES UP TO 25 FT. WAVES OF THIS MAGNITUDE WOULD LIKELY RESULT IN SIGNIFICANT BEACH EROSION AND COASTAL FLOODING. PORTIONS OF LAKE SHORE DRIVE AND OTHER FLOOD PRONE AREAS NEAR THE LAKE WOULD LIKELY EXPERIENCE OVER WASH FROM HIGH WAVES. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... A LAKESHORE FLOOD WATCH MEANS THAT CONDITIONS FAVORABLE FOR LAKESHORE FLOODING ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP. RESIDENTS ON OR NEAR THE SHORE SHOULD TAKE ACTION TO PROTECT PROPERTY... AND LISTEN FOR LATER STATEMENTS OR WARNINGS. It should be noted that the lakefront trail is already badly damaged and currently closed. Portals and ramps are already barricaded. I can only imagine how this weeks storm will probably remove what's left. Guess I won't be biking around there for awhile.
