Pet Peeves!
I want to try biking in Cincinnati sometime. I know the hills would be painful for a flatlander like me, but i think it would be a good experience. I know, and as you know it provides great contrast to my street. Well, no one bothers me if I bike through the hood. I'm sure the "professionally dressed" cyclists would run into problems down in Englewood. But you have to dress heavy and warm here in Chicago. The cold January wind is terrible. Yeah, and I think it's unfortunate they take the opportunity to think they can run stoplights now because they are on a bike. It's the law here in Illinois for bike to stop at a red light, although the city will let you get buy if you treat a red light as a four-way stop. But people won't even do that.

Pet Peeves!
I can't stand asshole cyclists. I'm minding my own business on Halsted and stopped at a red light...you know...because I actually stop at red lights and wait for them to go green. This dude blasts through the red light at Fullerton causing some traffic confusion. Light goes green I proceed. In this situation I'm going to say I believe I'm much more in shape than about 90% of the cyclist in this city since I work out 2 hours/day. So of course, I accelerate quick and sail right past him at 25 mph just because that's the speed I choose to go. I stop at the next stop sign, he blows right through it. Again, I pass him by a bit later. This time, the dude decides it's a race. He's starts trying to cut through on my right, except a cab stops in front of me...which I saw way in advance but he doesn't. He practically clips the cab (seriously having 1 hand on the back trunk. I still continue on my comfortable speed of 25 mph, impressed that this dude is making a big deal out of it. North Ave intersection ahead. I stop, he goes to run the light except he has to slam on the brakes nearly hitting pedestrians in the crosswalk and a car crossing the intersection. Because of the abrupt stop, he sloppily falls sideways off his bike. I slowly ride past him, not saying a word. What an idiot. I don't get the competitive nature of bicycling. I like to ride 25 mph on the streets because I feel it's a good pace to keep up with vehicular traffic. But some cyclists all decked out in spandex jerseys and $1500+ bikes take it as some insult or invitation to race as I pass by them on my beaten up $600 bike, with timberland boots, heavy jeans, two hooded jackets, and a skateboard helmet. My bike is so effed up, it's got both rims bent and I spraypainted over the rusted parts black lol

I can't really. Things are pretty much covered in $5000 increments. Already everything is covered for more than it's worth. My most valuable items are my external hard drives. They are currently locked in a fireproof safe and also backed up at my office. Everything else is fortunately replaceable.

Gary, IN Part 1: Above Gary
It's fun to ask the cities familiarity test to michiganders. Can you name city streets in Chicago? 30 get named. Okay now Detroit? Woodward, Michigan, Trumbull, Gratiot, uhhhhhhhhhh, uhhhhhhhhhh, i75, i96...... ? Had grand haven become a huge rail hub it could've been Chicago. I can agree no sunsets on the lake is kind of lame

What an inconvenience. I hope you can replace everything that was taken. Experiencing the frustration of having a bike stolen I can only imagine how much worse it would be to have your place broken into. ------------------------------ Last night, there was a close call on my floor. I was getting to bed around 3:00 a.m when someone's smoke detector down the hall went off. It was sounding for maybe 15-20 minutes. I finally got up and went out into the hall. A group of people had formed and there was smoke starting to come out from the louvers that are on the doors. They said they had gotten building security to come upstairs, but he said it wasn't a big deal since initially there was no smoke. The group was knocking on the door like wusses, so I pounded on her door as hard as I could with my fist. Finally we hear someone scramble inside and unbolt the door. Whole apartment filled with thick smoke. I can't tell 100% what the cause was, but the smoke (the burning furniture kind) seemed to be heaviest over the couch, and she's a smoker. I take it she lit her couch on fire, woke up to the smoke detector and was trying to resolve the situation without anyone knowing. This girl is cute, but she's a freakin mess. I've encountered her in the elevators and down in the laundry room and she seems to attract crisis and disaster to herself. If that's what I see, and all I see of her, I can only imagine what her man goes through

Architecture Idea Question
The Renaissance Center in Detroit has the elevator tower (a glass cylinder) on the exterior of the building (stair towers too). I'm not sure if you mean for the elevator car to be actually exposed to the exterior though. That can't be done in the US since it violates code I believe, you'd be exposing all the mechanical components to the elements.

Gary, IN Part 1: Above Gary
Highland Park, Michigan......an urban "island city" entirely within Detroit. It's absolutely obliterated http://www.flickr.com/photos/detroitderek/2303887109/# http://www.flickr.com/photos/71288712@N00/465905029/# HP has cleaned up quite a bit though. There used to be a lot of burned out hulk apartment buildings that made good "ruin porn" for photographers.

Where is the actual time line itself? Do you have a production schedule? The timeline varies depending on scope of work and size of the building. Really the only thing I can accurately predict is how long it will take to render. But when we get into the project, we can at least say what zone we are in so we know when to stop designing and start setting up the render.

So my new supervisor is a really good guy, unfortunately part of his job is watching over the 3d and graphics production department within my company and that's not really his background. I've created this timeline to help explain how some of the work I do gets done. I think it's helpful and I want to use the chart as a means to communicate with my colleagues at what point of the project we are in. This will guarantee we are done on time, and there's no panic moments http://www.umich.edu/~ifmuth/3d_timeline.pdf

Demolished Ohio 2010
Thank you for putting together the video ink. What's depressing is some of these buildings were destroyed by arson...meaning there's simply no commission, foundation, or awarded status that can keep a building from me destroyed. I only hope the penalties for arson become more severe since it puts fireman in danger and also destroys our communities.

Gary, IN Part 1: Above Gary
^ I guess at the time it didn't matter though. By the 1950's when the toll road was under construction, the station was already shuttered, leaving the steel mill as the only place to go. As cool as the building is, from an aesthetic/quality standpoint, the building is constructed of inferior materials.....cast in place concrete instead of limestone and brick. That's helped from a durability standpoint, but also the reason the building has faded to a rusty brown color. The building is actually a stunning example of the type of faux historical construction of precast and pour concrete we lament today....only they were a bit more tasteful at it back then.

Gary, IN Part 1: Above Gary
Depressing. I've gone around Gary and found some nice spots though. I wish Gary and nearby Hammond could swap downtowns. Hammond (a healthy and stable industrial city) gets all the nice architecture from Gary, and Gary gets all the sh*t urban renewaled stuff from Hammond. Then we can make Gary Int'l Airport, Chicago's 3rd, and it becomes a major freight hub and jobs center for warehousing, freight, FBO and MRO jobs. There. I fixed the problem...saved downtown architecture and gave the populous jobs.

General Roads & Highway Discussion (History, etc)
70 hours a year in Chicago...ouch. Though I rarely drive around the city. I've noticed the Eisenhower Expwy has been undergoing resurfacing. Probably will make next years numbers worse. Statistically, most of the blame is the Chicago Circle Interchange. Though I'd blame the Ryan/55 Connector Interchange. It's perpetually backed up. If I know I'm out that way, I bring the camera. Perfect opportunity to take skyline photos while you are pretty much parked.
