Chicago apartment help
Too bad Bella Bacinos doesn't deliver that far out. It's not very well known, but it's the best deep dish pizza I've eaten by far. Their thin crust is great too. I just wanted to point out though I have plenty of friends that don't care for deep dish, but they love it when it's from Bella Bacinos.

Ann Arbor: Developments and News
It is, and I don't like the way it's displayed. It's tacky. It's not like it's some old roman artifact. It's from a hundred year old building that once stood on this site and didn't receive the maintenance and upkeep it deserved. I would have preferred to see the pieces embedded into the landscape of the courtyard. When I took this photo, I was reminded of a Wal-Mart in Northern Michigan. The Wal-Mart had faux historical details that resembled that of a railroad station. In the middle of the parking lot was this old roundhouse from the late 1800's. In the middle of the parking lot!!! It was insulting IMO.

A fresh crop of new buildings beginning construction: New Georgetown Mall will replace the existing aging strip mall and all that horrible parking! annarbor.com 601 Forrest Apartments 14 stories (reduced from 24 floors due to citizens' fear of "shadows") The building will lease apartments at $1000 per bed. This project will replace several commercial businesses that have been offered space on the ground floor of the new building. The development will not remove any architecturally significant structures. annarbor.com Proposed: "Pizza House Tower" Not really named that, but the owners are proposing a tower built atop their restaurant. Being the observant architecture geek, I could not figure out why the new addition to their restaurant had been so overbuilt. Chunky steel columns and deep beams for a two story structure? Years later, here you go...ah that's why this is built so heavy. This development would replace a house. annarbor.com Parking garage and transit facility Will provide space for buses, bikes and cars (obviously). Will have accommodations for elevated or ground rail transit. The parking garage will replace an empty grass area. annarbor.com Hayward av Developments: I'll post them when I get the images downsized. The "Destruction" of Downtown Detroit...
Some streets were deliberately widened long after the city was built out. For example, all the buildings on Woodward were truncated to widen the street. They would cut out several structural bays in the middle of the buildings, and push the facades back into place. It's cool to look historical photos and them compare them to modern photos. It looks like someone used the cut and paste command. Imagine doing that today! It would cost billions.

The "Destruction" of Downtown Detroit...
Well the photo I showed where you see visible signs of vandalism can easily be explained. One of the tenants let in huge crowds, and by huge I mean, by the hundreds into the building. He could have really cared less. There would be raves, which were then followed by the tower getting trashed. Later, the bar manager on the ground floor (the only operating business) would let people in under much more discretion. That continued until the bar eventually went out business and was replaced by a different one. But between 2004-2007, it was pretty easy to get in, just by asking. You'd fill out a couple forms, and that gained you access. For all the other buildings, doors just stand wide open, and trespassing isn't really enforced like it should be.

West Baden Springs Hotel
I've always wanted to check out this building just to see the huge interior. One thing I don't like is the dome portion. Its appearance seems a bit postmodern and out of place.

Chicago apartment help
Hmm, I'm not familiar with any delivery places in the LS area other than the generic chains. There's alot of independently owned places in Near North that I order from but they don't have locations in LS. I would say for carry out at least, try Piece. Actually, I'd highly recommend going there. It's on North Ave in Wicker Park. Get there early. The wait on friday evenings gets up to 4 hours.

iPod tech help?
Sorry rockandroller, I got caught up in other discussion lol. Again, I'm not sure if this is how to do it. You know what, at some point very soon, I will have to do exactly what you are trying to do so I may as well get it over with soon. I'm tired of iTunes trying to cram 40,000 songs on an itouch, and leaving out the songs it thinks I don't like. Go to File > Library > Export library. Name it the file name you want like BigLibrary.xml. Now you can highlight all the songs in iTunes and then press delete. Why do you need to delete them? Well, when you plug in your ipod, it will see a blank library and re-populate it with only the songs on your ipod. Once you've done that, you now have to export the library that was on your ipod. Export the library as ipodlibrary.xml or whatever file name you choose. Now you may want to bring back the library you had before. Go to File > Library > Import Playlist. Not sure why they call it "playlist." They should keep their terminologies consistent and they fail to do so. Navigate to the first .xml file you created and it will restore it to the library you had before. Remember when you get your ipod back, you must have the ipodlibrary.xml file loaded or else it will put Biglibrary.xml on your ipod.

iPod tech help?
I think you'll find the itouches last far longer than the classic ipods. Solid state hard drives that can handle abuse and better displays that are more resistant cracking and extreme temperatures. Heck, wouldn't be surprised if these devices have ballistics ratings in the future. Iphones have already saved lives lol.

Great to hear. Logan square is a great neighborhood, and lots of cool architecture. My favorite coffee hangout in this neighborhood is New Wave on Milwaukee.

iPod tech help?
ipod classics don't have solid state hard drives, they are conventional disks with moving parts. That's the issue. There's really no point in retrieving a new hd on ebay. The repairs to reconnect it are difficult even with the right tools. Though ipods are expensive, they aren't THAT expensive. Having one for 4 years, you basically assume the thing is at the end of it's life, you've gotten your money's worth it and its time to save up for a new one. No one should ever attempt to pro-long the life of a hard drive unless you have a very good reason too (repair after fire or flood) Finally, making the technology jump is worth it as well if you go with an itouch

You can probably replace the battery yourself for cheap. I've done it without any problems. Sometimes the sadface though could be hard drive issues. If that's the case, the device is done. You can't replace the hard drive

Trip to Chicago MLK weekend!
1) Check out Armitage Street off the brown line, and Wicker Park off the blue line. Very photogenic. There's plenty of other areas with even more spectacular architecture, but I'm also keeping your girl in mind, and she'll likely be equally impressed by these neighborhoods. 2) Eh, just hit up the art museum, it's convenient. And the Shedd has an incredible show. 3) Not sure 4) She can go to all of the 250 Akiras on North Ave! Well, more like 8 of them in a row, but she'll like them. Armitage and Halsted has lots of Boutiques, and so does Damen Ave up in Bucktown. 5) Go to Piece Pizza in Wicker Park. Do it, trust me. You'll love it. I've got a bunch of friends in town, but I might have time if you want some spectacular views of the city. Just pm me I live on Michigan Ave / oak and my roof deck and office have some good vantage points if you are into photography.

Bike to work? Show of hands?
^ It's pretty interesting how people can customize bikes to improve performance or carry cargo. I saw a couple trailer bikes this past summer. They were going down Michigan ave and had quite a bit of cargo. I like how they employed a drive shaft system as opposed to a chain. Seems like a smart idea since I think a chain would fail from towing so much weight. Looked like there was also a special braking system as well.

[architecture geek] So I happen to have a collection of bricks from demolished buildings. My parents moved them to my apartment because they are trying to clean up the house...actually they intend to use them as part of a basement renovation eventually but for now, my place. I had about 25 of them stacked in a cardboard box. Somehow that box ended up on the top of many other boxes in my closet. Being stupid, I pulled out the box at the very bottom, thinking the others would just drop straight down into place. No. The top one falls on me. 25 bricks falling on you hurts. Fortunately the 1 layer thick cardboard, cushioned somewhat, but damn.......... [/architecture geek]

Demolishing brand new buildings?
This project finished the basement then stopped, then made it up to the 3rd or 4th floor later on, but never got the roof put on. You can see it nearly complete in the updated google aerial view, but just above ground in streetview. I've been by several times. The wood is very weathered and some masonry is starting to go missing. For all the overbuilding that happened on the southside, I was expecting way more empty buildings, but really you do have to search to find them. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=+1342+W+Randolph+St&sll=41.886616,-87.660642&sspn=0.003335,0.007607&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=1342+W+Randolph+St,+Chicago,+Cook,+Illinois+60607&t=h&layer=c&cbll=41.813799,-87.596599&panoid=Js2m98eEyELQ2KURpkXZgw&cbp=11,75.21,,0,-9.41&ll=41.8138,-87.596599&spn=0.00075,0.003803&z=19

Demolishing brand new buildings?
^ LOL!! Yes, that one on Ashland is my favorite. I crack up whenever I go past it. As soon optical processors use less electricity maybe? okay For the past two weeks, I've been really frustrated. The walls and ceilings of my building are soundproof. You can't here the neighbors, because the building was constructed that way. But for the past two weeks, I've heard what I thought was the sound of my neighbors. A muffled sound through the floor. Occasional laughing, but mostly music. And I could recognize all the songs too. Their taste was in rock. Tom Petty, Red Hot Chili Peppers. Some good stuff.....but I can't have that at 2:00 am on a work night. What's even more strange, is I'd hear it when I went to bed and then when I'd get up in the morning. I can't imagine someone getting so little sleep every night. So yesterday, I needed to find out who it was. I went up to the 14th floor apartment above mine. Silence. Then the 12th floor apartment...silence. I figured maybe I just wasn't hearing the sound through their door, so I went back down and figured I'd give it a few more nights. Today I had it. I put my ear down to the floor and realized the sound was rather clear. Moving closer, I found my ear up close to the sub. Waaaaaaht!!! The annoying sounds were in fact from me?! Damn, good thing I wrote no letters! It was very faint and static-like. Because it was from the sub was why it sounded muffled like it was coming through the floor. The sub is only plugged in though, but the wires are detached from all the speakers. Nearby is an old ethernet cable that hasn't been used in 8 years since my building went fiber-optic + wireless. It runs the perimeter of the apartment then outside the building. It was acting as a giant antenna and picking up a Chicago classic rock radio station. Why this station I'm not sure. I'm sure someone here can answer it. I live a block from the John Hancock building which has transmission towers. Anyway, I solved it. I unscrewed the jack and removed all the perimeter cable, and I'll re-use the wiring elsewhere. In the meantime, by sub has fallen silent. I hadn't heard it before, because I brought my speakers from my parents house over the holidays to my apartment, and only turned on the power, but not connected it to my computer yet.
