    Going into a bar and seeing charger cables running across the table top to power strips seems pretty common now. Alot of the nightclubs in Chicago have charger lockers near the bathroom. For a $1 you can keep your phone plugged in a locked cabinet the time you are there.
  2. That's funny, though I feel like a veteran in this building, I only know a couple people. Almost five years now despite skyrocketing rents. I worked out a deal with my landlord to move to a new unit. Unfortunately it's near the elevators and I've been greatly bothered by the vibrations from the elevators moving by. Might be time for a new place and have been looking around Lincoln Park, or West Lake View around Ashland av. You don't deserve to live so close to a Barney's! As a man of color, you know better than that. I do shop at Barney's and eat occasionally at Fred's but that's about it for shopping in the immediate area. Most of the stores on my street I can't pronounce or I just say them the way I think they should be said like. Channel, gucky, and Lewis Vitten. The area has gotten alot more bougie lately and they are going heavy with the wrecking ball to clear out much of the old Chicago and replace it with a global boutique atmosphere. Now our building is getting nicer things which has me a bit on edge. New wood floors and granite countertops. It was nice enough they'd replace the carpet every year, but wood floors is a big deal. Since I've created this thread I'm finding myself more around Lincoln park these days drinking old style and crashing on friend's couches, which is a pretty good sign that I should move if I only spend my weekday nights at home.

    Great pics. I've gone to two Super Bowl events (Detroit and Indy) and found them fun. A few things do cost money. There was a zip line thing in downtown Indy that was $10 or so, but that's understandable. As you can tell, these events are more entertaining than the game itself.

    I never really got into this social networking tool. When it came out I gave it a try and set up some limited info, added maybe two dozen friends and then avoided it. But since it came out, all I get is complete strangers adding me to circles. I don't want that. Is this normal? Never, ever in the 10 years I've been on Facebook have I gotten a request from someone I didn't know and for most of those years my profile was open to the public. Despite facebook's commercial attitude it still seems safe if you are competent enough not to click on unfamiliar link or fall for fake story / page scams. And google will always be the first and worst when it comes to collecting and tracking data.
  5. Well that's not surprising. It was pretty much a matter of when. But the article doesn't mention that Sears is planning to lease more space in that building for their online business and now CPS is moving in? I guess it's good there's more loop office workers, but you can tell the strategy in that building has been to gradually convert the place into office only with shopping on the ground floor. I kind of like the multi-level retail but it seems modern retail stores rarely go above 3-4 floors unless they are in a mall.

    The people that I know that tend to "hate things" tend to have the narrowest interests IMO. I don't waste my time with these people. We did a company outing to watch a baseball game and one my coworkers wouldn't come because they didn't like MLB games. Really that's your reason? As opposed to socializing with friends and coworkers? Why not just enjoy the free experience, free food and beer and get to know the people you work with better? Oh never mind. Don't waste the time.

    Not very common in the US but other countries have steep fines for throwing out recyclables.
  12. There used to be a ton of Toronto style residential / commercial buildings on Oak street but they've since demolished most of them and replaced them with modern multi-story retail structures. I think they are done for now as many left are "Red Structures" which means the city will likely reject any demolition permit.

    You respond with: "Yes, you may use the photo for the story" with whatever other requests you have. They just want it for a story and probably nothing else.
  14. Absolutely terrible. It can be repaired though, so it better be done correctly. Historic terra cotta facades are reconstructed here in Chicago all the time because over a century they do eventually fall apart. As shocked as I am, I know it can be reversed.

  17. Realtor's Building to be demolished on Michigan Ave Looks like this 1960's mish-mash Bob Newhart building will come down and be replaced by a tower.   18. Just heard in the rumor mill that the owner of buildings on the 3800 block of Broadway wants to upsize his developments. Shown below is a streetview of a building that would have additional floors added to the top of it if that happens. The street needs more density and you save a nice terra cotta structure. I'm in favor - Link removed - Google streetview malfunction

  20. Ah, making me miss summer. Another great tour! The area below had a nasty fire last weekend. Fortunately the 3-story terracotta building to the left survived. It's neighbor (not pictured) was totally destroyed and knocked out 4 businesses. The only thing that survived the intense flames was the Chicago Bears flag hanging on the front of the building.

    We have about six 4x3 "mini dumpsters" that are rotated daily and sit beneath a compactor unit in the basement. I don't know how often they are emptied since I throw the trash in a chute in the stairwell and it magically goes away. I know our recycling gets picked up once a week, and we have two recycling dumpsters. But Chicago picks up garbage everyday, and I really can't image all of them being full daily. We have 215 apartments in our building.

    ^ It's always funny when someone takes eternity to parallel park in the spaces in front of our building. Then they get out of the car and read the signs that say the spots are intended for building residents, and guests of building residents. If you don't ask our doorman to park there, he'll have your car towed in minutes. Usually they'll get back in and go look for another space, but not after they spent a whole bunch of time trying to park.

    When product reps send email to me on Saturdays and Sundays when I haven't requested their services at the moment. When I need you I'll call. And stop setting dates. No I can't meet on the 14th, I have meetings. Not the 15th either. My Monday morning email is so stacked, do they really think this is good business relationship by being a hassle?
