Toledo Phototour (Spring 2010): Part 3 - A walk on the WILD SIDE...
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Toledo,+OH&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Toledo,+Lucas,+Ohio&gl=us&ll=41.647589,-83.541758&spn=0.001656,0.002806&t=h&z=19&layer=c&cbll=41.647697,-83.542207&panoid=PJl5WrLJz-bxs0kK-xE3Tg&cbp=12,326.47,,0,-25.63 Great photos! Question, is the building in the above link begun renovations? I remember seeing them prep it. I did a project in architecture school back in 2005 where I renovated this building, and also constructed a new one next to it. I have a yellow "R" from the sign visible that had fallen and was in the road.

Bike to work? Show of hands?
I tend to find the shared turn lanes to be safer IMO as you show. That way cars at least slow down and follow behind you rather than try to beat you to the crossover.

Bike to work? Show of hands?
I have yet to make it to the original Billygoat underground. Been to the one in merchandise mart though.....But that's like eating at some famous restaurant at the airport lol. Quick question columbusite, i just noticed your sig...but aren't all bikes lanes to the LEFT of the right turn lane? I can't recall any places in Michigan or Illinois where cars can perform a turn crossing a bike lane. There's a hashed cross over zone called the "green zone" where cyclists have right-away before cars merge. But the right turn lanes occurs after the cross-over. Some cities actually paint the pavement bright green. Below is a really bad cross-over design though. It's a merge point for HOV. The bike lane is two solid white lines coming together, which typically means cyclists are required to yield to any vehicular traffic. It creates a mess of confusion sometimes. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=roosevelt+road+and+clark,+chicago,+il&sll=41.881749,-87.700977&sspn=0.000829,0.001403&gl=us&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=W+Roosevelt+Rd+%26+S+Clark+St,+Chicago,+Cook,+Illinois+60605&ll=41.867565,-87.633203&spn=0.00165,0.003828&t=k&z=19

Demolishing brand new buildings?
I've noticed there's dozens of brand new single and multi family homes scattered all over parts of Chicago that have just been completed, but not occupied. Many of them were built speculatively, but in failing neighborhoods. Already, these homes have become magnets for vandalism. Many windows have been smashed and it just snows and rains inside. How prevalent is this in other cities? I've seen it in Detroit, and they've already begun demolishing some of the unoccupied homes that were never occupied in the first place E Garfield Park: Went by here recently and it's still there. Southside Chicago. Under Construction in this view: Currently finished, but heavily vandalized and seriously damaged http://maps.google.com/maps?oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&ie=UTF8&q=Calvary+Temple+Baptist&fb=1&gl=us&hq=Calvary+Temple+Baptist&hnear=Chicago,+IL&cid=0,0,5219825675469419418&ll=41.813597,-87.633471&spn=0.000801,0.001403&t=h&z=20&layer=c&cbll=41.813596,-87.633472&panoid=B0Pp7JveqX61Fs_oHFPIKQ&cbp=12,301.2,,0,-7.52

Just wait till optical processors are heavy out on the market. Our current computers will become laughable antiques. Our humble and quaint devices that use electricity to transmit data.... It's like replacing the horse and carriage with a bullet train.

iPod tech help?
I've never done this before, so another response in this thread is needed. But what I'd do is export your current library in iTunes Then click and hold shift and then press delete. It will remove all the songs from your library, but not your hard drive. Plug in your ipod and sync it to your library. It will create a new library with all the songs that are only on your ipod. FYI, If songs exist on your ipod that don't on your computer, a new folder will be created on your hard drive with that song. Export the new iTunes library (we'll call it the reduced version) that contained songs that were on your ipod. You can then either keep reduced version up or simply import the extended version back to your iTunes while you wait to get your new ipod. Just be sure the reduced version is imported when you get your ipod back FYI, here's the inside of my ipod classic. You can see the battery to the left, and the flat grey and blue rectangle is the hard drive. The white frame to the right protects the hard drive if the ipod is dropped. Typically if the hard drive requires replacement, the entire device is replaced. The battery is easily removable however. Still runs great after all these years, though I'm now already on my second iTouch. I sold my first which was pretty much in perfect condition

New UO site design suggestions
This page describes an idea I'm thinking: http://buildingsofdetroit.com/ UO needs to be better branded. You will see in the above example they went with a vintage art deco feel. Not saying UO has to do this, but there's a clear style and consistency across their website. There also needs to be better navigation on the UO places page. There shouldn't be a new page load everytime you make a selection. I need to find the example I'm thinking of that works well.

LOL, it's not bad at all. It's warm down there because the buildings exhaust steam on the lower levels. Even better is the kitchens and laundry rooms for hotels exhaust on the lower levels as well, so there's always a pleasant smell....something you wouldn't expect where you'd commonly see dumpsters or homeless people.

I've heard conversation from time to time where people suggested that all city positions should go to out of state residents. It implies Detroit residents are too incompetent to run the city they live in. There's plenty of competent people from Detroit, tons! But they all up and leaving for jobs elsewhere OR they want to have no part of city government because it's too much of a headache. I think the current administration is at least the first step in the right direction, but there is a long way to go.

Please make the forum easier to read on mobile devices. Urbanplanet, though I don't post there much anymore loads a separate forum for mobile devices. Try it, it's great. I have tons of ideas for the website portion, that I'll post later.

I should also mention the interior is spectacular. The marble floors in the rotunda foyer are my favorite.

I want to buy and renovate a mansion. My friend bought this gem in Detroit and work has been progessing nicely. http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Detroit,+MI&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Detroit,+Wayne,+Michigan&gl=us&ll=42.386361,-83.082427&spn=0.003273,0.005611&t=h&z=18&layer=c&cbll=42.386723,-83.083266&panoid=VQIXTwZQz19yDRvdOMYsCA&cbp=12,306.66,,1,-4.12 Now all I need is money for renovations. And we don't really have abandoned mansions in Chicago, so I'll need about $12 million additional.

Pet Peeves!
^ I can't see how school zones could be bad or inconvenient or should they really qualify as a pet peeve. How about my pet peeve for today be People who drive through school zones but are not picking up kids. - Do not drive through school zones if you do not have to. - If you live/work near a school zone, you are required to accept that you will have to drive the speed limit* - If you live/work near a school zone, you are required to accept that you will have to be careful of higher concentrations of children * - What's the rush, 20 mph for a few hundred feet that bad? * "required to accept" as: don't complain about a law that intends to ensure safety of pedestrians or either stop driving altogether.

Pet Peeves!
I hate that one too...there was one for teeth whitening that kept popping up....so if her discovery is that rinsing your mouth with chlorine bleach will whiten your teeth, we should listen to her because her credentials are being a "Mom"? Kinda like that Airborne stuff invented by a "teacher". I never clicked on the ad, but I read about the complaints elsewhere; the pitch is for a kit that costs something like $8, but the people who bought it later discovered to their dismay that they had signed up for something that got shipped monthly for something like a year for $8 a pop, charged to their VISA card. People who tried to cancel were told that they could stop shipments but would have to pay the whole annual charge they signed up for. Quite possibly their bakery does run 24/7. Large-volume, high-production ones sometimes do, because it takes a while to get equipment like ovens stabilized and it's more efficient to keep the whole process running once everything is right. Still, the wording on the package probably causes some shoppers to infer that the goods were baked the same day that they arrived on the local store shelves, and that ain't necessarily so. Yeah, I've heard of people signing up for really expensive stuff like that too, only to find re-occuring charges. They would have to cancel their card.

Has anyone played with FourSquare yet?
Actually that's just a myth....just like the privacy settings on facebook. The casual user may not be able to see your settings. But there's a growing internet security problem of people getting around these settings and getting access to people's private information. This is even more worrisome: Makes me think back to the humble old days when my university was just 1 of 10 schools that had facebook available to them. Back then it was okay to post your address and phone number. When the exclusivity went away it just opened the door to all the same problems as myspace. And now with mobile phone check-ins, it's even worse.

Bike to work? Show of hands?
Thought, I'd post of this link of an awesome photo of Chicago's triple decked street system. This is the final stretch of my bike commute downtown to my office. Gotta love rushing fast on a bike through this section. Photo by iamhydrogen http://www.flickr.com/photos/iamhydrogen/5317975341/#sizes/o/in/photostream/

Funniest thing I've read in a long time
You do have to kind of think about it though. Look at schools back then ....then look at schools today.... Discipline was far stronger back then. Private schools are fortunate to have an easy situation. They don't have to punish, they can just kick the kid out of school.

Pet Peeves!
I'm tired of the ads where they say ...."What doctors DON'T want you to know" ...."What credit card companies DON'T want you to know" ...."Don't pay department store prices!" Even worse the ads on webpages that say [insert your city name] mom discovers this 1 secret trick to [insert problem their products solves] Are people really that stupid?

Nice. LOL, I thought that initially until I moved each way in either direction and the remained in the same spot. Posing to an invisible photographer or pretending to be statues. Pretty awesome view. Chicago needs to build something like that over around Goose Island. http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=Chicago,+IL&safe=off&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Chicago,+Cook,+Illinois&gl=us&sqi=2&ll=41.896471,-87.643813&spn=0.003298,0.005611&t=h&z=18&layer=c&cbll=41.896467,-87.643927&panoid=ZfP4ciu-08EVXFoRgo4gjQ&cbp=12,334.16,,0,-1.48
