Today's pet peeve is sorting and rinsing recyclables. It's 2010, are most cities really this far behind? My hometown we NEVER had to do this. Throw all stuff caked in food into one bin. That was it. City picks it up, rinses it at their plant, and has machines that automatically sort everything. This is pretty much the reason why people don't do it at all. Fortunately my apartment building was concerned of this, and allows us to dump everything in one place and has staff that will sort them for us. There's really no justifying it. Everyone I've talked to has agreed that the requirement to sort recyclables is absolutely ridiculous.

It's weird to think back where you were making that first post. I was finishing up my undergrad in architecture. Had no idea I'd be going to grad school right away and only dreamed of living in Chicago. Now here I am, long done with grad school and my 2nd year living and working downtown. The pictures I posted in my first thread were actually out of date as well. Probably 2 years old than that post. It goes way back to when I started college and was exploring Detroit. Didn't own a car then so one of my friends from Detroit had to pick me up. We explored a bunch of abandoned buildings and of course took plenty of photos.

Horses in the city. I can't stand the horse and carriages here in Chicago. When they walk by, they smell absolutely disgusting since they are basically hauling their waste around behind them. I never saw the real benefit. Well, maybe tourists want an olde timey evening ride through the city. So I check yelp and most of the comments were negative. Okay, just do away with them then. It doesn't seem right either. Even on a bike I'm a bit nervous around cars. But what about a horse? Unpredictable? Seems kind of wrong. Horses belong out on rural trails and pastures. They should replace them with robot horses. That would be a win.

I was wondering why all the buildings here in downtown Chicago were purple. I guess I wasn't all that "aware"

That's cool you were at the Blackhawks parade. I was hoping to you'd catch an angle where I could be seen dumping a whole garbage can of confetti on the people below. LOL, Bye Bye Chicago. I walk past that place when I go get Chipotle for lunch

In my 6 years at Michigan it's always been kind of like that. After the games, freshman and sophmores would go out to eat, and then go back to their dorms and just chill. Juniors, Seniors, and grad students would just go to the bar. Large house parties were really not our thing. I mean they happened, and occasionally a block party but they were EXTREMELY tame to what other schools would do. The cops rarely got called because they wouldn't get out of control. I think Michigan fans have become indifferent to the whole rivalry thing. The last time we beat them was what, 2003? I mean, you know we have a hell alot of other things to brag about . :-D For the moment, we'll just dwell on the laurels of our past accomplishments until our team dominates again.
  8. I returned to Ann Arbor for a football game. We won in quadruple overtime. But we won....this time. Anyway, I got development photos. New Thompson Street Garage New meets old. One of additions was railings. The old ramp had knee rails, so if someone pushed you, you would easily fall over the edge. Most people just simply stayed away from the edge. Couzens Hall with new windows and masonry repair. I can't remember the last time I've seen the limestone accent bands shine that bright or the brick that deep of a red. No idea what the interior renovations look like South wall facing palmer field New Park where the Kresge complex once was. The campus development plan shows buildings taking this spot in just a few years. Wouldn't be surprised if this park was used for staging and maturing of trees for other parts of campus in the meantime. Mott School of public health...or with all those funky wave columns and accents, the entrance to Seaworld possibly. I've never been fond of this building. It just looks really strange, especially that archway over the road with the way they ran the bricks. And those fiberglas cornices are beginning to bow and bubble on all sides of the building. Check out the flashing peeling away above that entry. It's like it's made of paper. School of Kinesiology, beautiful rehab Mosher-Jordan renovation and new central dining facility. That's been open and the place is gorgeous inside. I now understand why so many universities are demolishing their 1950's-1970's dorms. They are cell blocks, and that's not conducive to a comfortable live-learn type of environment. Today's new dorms feature high end amenities, gourmet food courts, and spa-like washrooms. To keep up with the $4000-6000/month student lofts nearby, the University must build high end, and that's exactly what they are doing. Behind me was the also recently restored/renovated Stockwell Hall New transit center. Hey, I was hoping for el trains or maybe a subway system when I returned, but you never know in the future. New crosswalks and plazas Zaragon 2 site clearing Render source: annarbor.com Zaragon 1 (located on the other side of campus) Zaragon 2 is anticipated to be a success, and a proposed Zaragon 3 is possibly in the works New Law School building. Note the brand new Ford School of public policy to the right that opened 2 years ago. Both replaced one of the last surface lots on Central campus. I love that the U of M administration has an anti-surface lot agenda. I agree, there shouldn't be a single parking lot on any campus! Utility vehicles can park on sidewalks if need be. All of UM's garages are located on the periphery and share them with commercial areas. What a concept right? Shared parking between the school and businesses. 1 garage for everyone instead of multiple ones for each use. Masonry matches the old of the neighboring law quad. Michigan Stadium, east approach Michigan Stadium, east elevation Upper loggia level Main loggia level New Suites New CVS. Facadectomy of an old building. Looks they didn't tear down the house/store thing. Kind of glad. Adds character. But the arched facade building was in bad shape. At least it will look the same (or better) and have modern office and retail space behind it North Quad. Back in 2004, I sat bored in a room inside a building that once stood on this site. I was right by a window that would have sat just above the present day entrance to this new structure. It was my sister's graduation and the film school was having a mini ceremony of their own. While I listened to speakers go on for about an hour, I began peeling the paint off this rotted out window sill. By the end, I had 1/4 of the sill stripped if flaking paint. I got an ugly stare from my mom, considering I had just damaged an already damaged piece of architecture (that was my immature excuse back then). I guess it didn't matter. The building was destroyed 1 year later. The Frieze building was good in many ways and terrible other times. Its exterior had rich classical elements, but the interior was a warren and for the most part, the building not very well taken care of. The university knew its days were numbered. It was 8 AM on a saturday and about 36 degrees out, so no one was out walking around. I can imagine ivy climbing up that back wall.

Deer are increasingly entering urban environments because of all the food left around. My housemate damaged his car when a deer ran out of a downtown Ann Arbor alley. His insurance company gave him a hard time over it despite that he had a police report. Also, coyotes were being introduced in Chicago to control rat populations. They've been spotted frequently on the Northside and in the loop. For the most part, they've been complacent in the city and downtown areas, but people were upset when one walked into a Quiznos restaurant and took a nap in a cooler downtown: http://maps.google.com/maps?ie=UTF8&q=37+E.+Adams,+chicago,+il&fb=1&gl=us&hnear=&cid=0,0,14627754789322530406&ei=zmXbTKLQKcLflgf6243WCA&ved=0CBgQnwIwAA&hq=37+E.+Adams,+chicago,+il&ll=41.879519,-87.626752&spn=0.000862,0.001902&t=h&z=20&layer=c&cbll=41.879517,-87.626764&panoid=tsRMOtbefsoXcfy2aZloow&cbp=12,99.86,,0,-4.33 Apparently, Seattle has a problem with keeping them from boarding trains.

Bachelors of Science in Architecture (2007) University of Michigan Masters in Urban Planning (2009) University of Michigan - triple focus (transportation, urban design, community development) I ended up working at an architecture firm after finishing planning, but I love it. Still got about another year to pay off the student loans though. Related fact: I recently read that 32% of Chicago's population holds a bachelors degree or better.

I don't like the oldies Christmas jams. The ones you mentioned annoy me the most. I like the jazzed up versions better that you can listen to on pandora. They are more department store type of music. And they make me want to walk downtown...or well I'm there so. . . . .d o w n s t a i r s . .. . . to do some shopping. I've noticed people have already begun to put lights up. I guess it's a good day since it's 70 degrees out. Despite that I live in a highrise, they allow live Christmas trees, so it's only a matter of time until the elevators are filled with needles.

Too big. Really I'm just looking for something to put in my pocket since I do listen to music on it while I bike. I can't put the Samsung tab in my pocket. But it does seem about the right size if the ipad is too bulky for people. Props for the SD card slot.

So now that my screen issue is resolved, I need to go to the apple store for something else. I'm looking to get the new iTouch. I really like the one I have now but it's second generation, and I like that the new ones have video and photo capabilities. I also need more hard drive space on it since my current 8 GB one is filled. The condition is practically like new, despite that it has over 3000 hours of usage. There have been no software/hardware issues since I got it over a year and a half ago, not a single scratch since it's been inside a case, and I still have the never used charging dock for it. The only thing it lacks are headphones, which IMO should never be resold. How much do you think I could get if I sell my current itouch?

Very cool. I've been in the Dixie Square Mall before. It's still standing and I think the state found some money to demolish it. But every time they try something goes wrong. The mall has virtually been destroyed since the 1980's. There was a plan to rehab the mall in the mid 2000's and apparently even had tenants lined up, only to get held up by environmental cleanup costs and then the developer getting into some trouble with the law. I bet Sherman would love to do his holiday shopping here lol I never understood why JCPenney doesn't add an atrium in their stores...but this one came naturally. Actually, since this was taken long ago, apparently almost half of the whole store is double height by now. The structural steel and outer brick and cmu walls are perfectly intact, so it's still a salvageable building, but it would take a substantial amount of work to make it all good again.

Most police departments have a notification system that you can sign up for that emails you or texts you on your phone. Not as fancy as what you are thinking, but it's possible someone could create it in the future.

Yeah well the weather channel is gone, but now I got burn-in of the club I looked up earlier this evening. Got back and now I have Chicago's Excalibur club ghosted lol. This time I was copying 940,000 files over to my new hard drive while I was away. For some reason the screen saver didn't activate. imacs have some of the best displays out there, but in my opinion they are too sensitive. Because cheaper monitors aren't as rich, they probably less susceptible to burn in. In fact my Dell Monitor connected is not quite as vibrant and nice, but iTunes has been displayed on that screen for over 4,000 continuous hours, and there is no persistent image. I was able to remove the weather channel by displaying a blank white image for 2 hours. But this is kind of annoying. This is probably the whole reason why macs display a screensaver only after 10 minutes of inactivity. The normal range is 30-45 minutes after inactivity for PCs. If this keeps up maybe it could be a display problem, I mean I've never had this happen before. The mac is on a 4-year full coverage warranty, so if push comes to shove......

I have the last version and love it. But I got pissed at it tonight. Before I left for dinner with my gf I checked the weather. Itunes was apparently left running and was playing tv episodes in the background which didn't allow my computer to go into screensaver mode. The weather channel website burned into my screen!!! This has happened before, and fortunately for LCD's the damage is never permanent and can be reversed. You can either leave it be and just let it eventually disappear or change your screesaver to a blank white screen for a few hours. They should get this issue worked out though. It's rare that it would happen, but annoying when it does.

ewwwwwwww Where on or within 2 Ave's of the mag mile, can you find an apartment for $1k? I was joking somewhat. I think most people that come to Chicago are neighborhood people. Although living downtown does have its benefits. In a business environment you get way more cred. when you list some address on prestigious street they know. As opposed to the "welll uhhhh wrigleyville." Not that there's anything wrong with that. But my address has certainly worked to my advantage. There are units that rent for $1000 and maybe just under (like $995) that will get you a reasonably sized studio. But for the most part, one bedrooms typically begin at $1250 and go right up from there. I tossed out SoNo just because I'm not fond of the direction that neighborhood is going. Really it's a haven for people from the suburbs who want to be in the city, but still have things that are familiar to them. Certainly the area has superb transit access, and tons of retail, but it's also traffic clogged. For people not familiar, it's basically like someone took a bunch of big box stores and shopping malls and stacked them all on top of each other. They tried to force parking requirements and retail square footage onto parcels that just could not accommodate them. As a result, it's like a big suburb tipped sideways. If Wicker Park would "Good Chaos", the SoNo area would be "bad chaos."

Damn, I can't sleep. Playing with auto-tune on the computer but it's only a matter of time before the neighbor I've never seen complains. I've discovered you basically have to belt sour notes fairly loud to actually get it the T-Pain / Kanye sound, or maybe its because the microphone is far away. Anyways, or it could be telling of their musical talent. Then again, I have none.

I'd take a picture of my imac desktop but it's filled up with icons cause that's where I save everything..... A few months ago one of my friends was over and pushed them into piles. But now those have gotten buried under as well. Unlike a pc, macs will just create a new grid of icons over the old ones on the desktop. So I got about 4 or 5 grids worth. Used to be a picture of downtown Detroit somewhere behind there.. Maybe I'll take a pic of my computer desktop at work tomorrow, but that's equally as trashed. Here's a screeny I took last year of my old work pc. STupid illustrator pen tool

Correct and Incorrect. It depends on where the situations turns. If you intervene to protect the person getting pummeled and the assault turn on you, you can do whatever is in your power to protect yourself regardless of age.
