  1. Highland Towers is for the most part salvageable. But I doubt anyone will fork over the money to fix it.

I'd probably go N scale that way it's more manageable.

Very nice. Love the views of the density

This really makes me miss the model train I had as a kid. Still have all the stuff in storage, but I doubt I could make the setup work in my kind of apartment lol.

Very nice! I want to check out this area next time I'm in NYC. Wish we had a "flower district." Chicagoans are obsessed with their green roofs and gardens. I'm sure a centralized place would do well.

So I just got pepper sprayed today. Was doing a brewery tour and the whole group was down inside the historic beer caves. Some "accidentally" set off a whole canister of pepper spray. It had the crowd coughing and gagging and rubbing their eyes. The brewery tour guides were taken by surprise not knowing what it was so they evacuated everyone out of the tunnels immediately. Apparently security caught wind of conversation and apprehended the individual who set it off. The brewery was incredibly apologetic and we got free stuff even though it clearly wasn't their fault and they handled the situation well. I find it hard to believe this person set it off by accident. I didn't think you could do that. It had to be some sort of stupid joke that ended up being a disaster.
  7. I have to admit though, there are tons of firms here in the US that love building schools and courthouses made of cmu blocks, hollow metal frame windows, and standing seam roofs. :VOMIT:

Time isn't so much the issue since I take it down to the basement and then come back 45-60 mins later when it's finished, but I've considered a laundry service. The one in my area picks up your clothes while you are at work, and when you return they are all done. Still a bit more than what I pay doing it myself. I've also found laundry is alot less painful if I iron my shirts and pants right before I leave for work. I cannot imagine spending two hours ironing every week.

Man I hate doing laundry. I wish clothes would magically clean themselves. I bought one of those mammoth detergent bottles with the tap, not thinking that I live in a highrise and need to get it to the laundry room 14 floors down. I've given up on it, and donated it for all my building to use. It'll probably be used up in 2 days.
  10. You know, I've been wondering for awhile. What is Detroit's physical age (dated by its existing structures). It seems that everyday Detroit loses substantial numbers of prewar architecture that give definition to the city. By definition, I mean commercial buildings on retail corridors and large apartment buildings. Detroit really doesn't have those anymore. It's the strangest thing. Certainly there are still neighborhoods with swaths of homes form the 30's, but the heaviest population centers in the city are in homes built in the 1940's on. When all these schools, apartment buildings, and even skyscrapers are gone, will we even think of Detroit as a place of history, or will we equate it with newer cities like Houston and Phoenix? This city had some ridiculously beautiful structures, but many are doomed.

I've discovered the best way to avoid them is pretend to talk on your phone. I pretended my itouch was an iphone on my way back today. They saw me but didn't approach

Alright, just got done uploading my Hollywood photos. Unlike the DTLA thread, I took these all last week. Some of Hollywood Blvd, and others off in the neighborhoods. I think this area has some great density and shows alot of promise for new infill projects. Not to mention there is great access to transit

SMP is definitely a very "hang out place." The biggest proof was the number of people in that place before 10:00 when the stores opened. I don't know if people were just there to admire the architecture or were simply waiting.

LOL, just bought a Husky tools Allen wrench set to fix my bike. It's okay but the Craftsman set I used to have was better. Alright, another sidewalk pet peeve. On a regular basis I'll encounter people pandering surveys or petitions near my office. Usually they are pretty good when I say "No thank you, not interested." But today they were unbelievably aggressive. As I'm walking along Michigan Ave, a girl starts walking toward me. Right away I say "sorry, I'm short on time." I had my headphones on and she steps right in front of me and waves her hand in my face. It was incredibly violating. I said, "Okay, I'm not interested..please.." She then steps asside but then begins following me down the street. I hear her say "Well thank you for being inconsiderate!" She suddenly departs when she see's another catch. I just couldn't believe it. I don't think harassing people is the way to get signatures. I heard other people's stories of where they have been called names or insulted when they declined to take a survey. I'm considering writing a letter to the city or the Alderman to complain. You can't walk more than 20 feet anymore without being bombarded by panhandlers, petitioners, or advertisers. I'm well aware how people will frequently encounter this in other large cities, but it's gotten to be ridiculous. I've started to consider only going to restaurants in the mall instead of street level businesses.
  15. Right now there are tons of historic buildings being burned down by arsonists and squatters. A much better job needs to be done to secure these buildings. Another elaborate structure, the Highland Apartments was recently lost to fire. Firefighters spotted an arsonist setting multiple fires and then running off. A business on Jefferson was set on fire critically injuring firefighters when a section of the building collapsed. The arsonist was later caught.

LOL, imagine if we could. Although there is amazing energy potential that could be captured if we could somehow expend the energy of the Caldera. It would last thousands of years.

Especially the twin ones. I hate the side-by-side ones. The ones in tandem are okay. It's just like stroller SUVs
  18. I get out to LA usually 2 to 3 times a year. I've started to spend more time downtown. While I was there this past week, these photos are actually from an April visit. I have about 2000 photos to upload, so expect some more threads of Santa Monica, Hollywood, and Venice. I could only wish midwest cities had as much downtown historical architecture. Most of DTLA maintains contiguous dense city blocks of old buildings with few parking lots and urban renewal.

WHY ARE YOU FOLLOWING ME. STOP FOLLOWING ME j/k Nice pics. I like the new Santa Monica Place. I saw the deck on a foggy morning, so all I could see was a blank white background above the rooflines

I'm thinking I would take public transit. I'm starting to appreciate it alot more in LA. It's really not as difficult as some make it out to be. But I think that's only because I'm coming from Chicago and have dealt with public transit annoyances.

I'm looking forward to fall in Chicago. It's the transition between two extremes. I'll admit the summers here are amazing with the lake, beaches, and all the throngs of vacationers on Michigan Ave. But the fall brings less humid temperatures, cool comfortable breezes, colorful tree lined streets, and the excitement of an upcoming holiday season. The most enjoyable time in this city is April-December. I wish January-March I could work in California during those 3 months. My company needs to open an office there.

Do you hate how a group of 4 or 5 people will take up the whole sidewalk? Unless you are pissed off person, you would have to stop or step aside in the street to let the obnoxious people pass or finally move over at the last second. Well, there's a construction site near my building that has solid walls on both sides of the sidewalk. Now you can just keep right and red rover your way through the chain, since you...well...have no other options.

So I'm officially back to urbanohio. For the past year, I've had an awful time trying to access this site. It would actually take 15 minutes to load the forum. Once I got in, it was slow. I never had problems viewing UO at work, so I couldn't understand why other sites would load, but not this one. Well, my building just switched their internet to RCN. UO loads instantly now. Time to celebrate with a nice healthy balanced meal after a long days work
