Andre's Chicago Photo(s) of the Day(s)
Very cool photos Rob. I think it's ironic how back then they'd be so adamant about photography and nowadays nearly all transit authorities (in Chicago) permit it....especially in these times. Both Metra and CTA have some good guides of do's and don't when it comes to photography with the don'ts being fairly obvious like.... Don't jump onto the tracks to take photos. Don't set up a full photography studio on station platforms (unless you ask first). While on the topic of transit. It was recently announced that Apple plans to spend $4 million on refurbishing the North and Clybourn Station. Currently they are building a store on that same block and want the existing structure to be a bit more complimentary to their store. Currently the 1940's station is in extreme disrepair. Not sure if it's true, but I've heard it will be reclad in limestone. Currently it's like a red/orange brick with purplish red marble. It's actually a really ugly building so any attempt to spruce it up will do wonders. Apple will contribute to renovating the platforms as well. I wonder if the CTA can begin to "sell" some of their stations to private corporations. For example, a corporation may have the right to exclusively advertise down there in exchange for paying for maintenance and renovation of the subway stations. I now the CTA is having tough times balancing the budget, so I'm not going to point blame for the condition of our subway stations. But seriously we need an upgrade

That is amazing.

Indian Summer at OSU
Excellent photos! Even as Wolverine, I think OSU has a beautiful campus. Killer aerial there of the oval.

Middletown: 1/2 Block to be Demolished (including theater)
The exteriors appear to be in fair condition. I don't see the rush. And judging by the rest of the street, even if there was new development you can expect to look like highway commercial and plenty of parking. That's really shame, I think this is a big mistake.

My 1920 plaster walls keep out most sound. Gotta love old construction. Actually in typical early century homes and apartments, you rarely go above an STC rating of 32 for interior walls. I mean, that's really thick plaster over typical stud walls. Maybe if the walls are insulated it may be higher, but it's far from easily attainable levels today. Separation between units in many newer urban buildings is reaching the 50's and 60's. With condo buildings, achieving ranges within the high 50's low 60's is almost a must. No expensive buyer wants to hear their neighbors. And ditto to gotribes post. Although many new insulating strategies that builders or developers choose to use by default can achieve some pretty high ratings

Cycling Advocacy
I feel like I'm maybe 1 of 1000 cyclists in Chicago that actually stops at red lights. I prefer to keep my life. I have yet to see a car-bike accident, but from what I have seen thus far as close calls, it's a cyclist blowing through an intersection. Speaking of another rare thing I do when biking, I've begun using the inner most lanes of Chicago's busiest streets. It seems far safer. No longer do I block buses, taxis, loading vehicles, bog turn lanes, and risk hitting careless pedestrians. Instead of motorists following me behind closely in curb lanes, they move over way ahead of time in the left lanes. Yeah it's considered "the fast lane" but I also feel it's been the safe lane when it comes to urban settings. This isn't the same for all cities, but by nature they make complete sense here when a bike lane is not provided. I've noticed more cyclists using inner lanes on Michigan Ave, and motorists and law enforcement have been very accommodating to it.

Well they have AC and heat so the windows are only open for fresh air and it's assumed there will be daytime noise. But those 2x10 stud walls can only block so much . . . . I'm impressed how much quieter my downtown highrise apartment is despite being just off one of Chicago's busiest streets. The windows are closed, and yes it's dead silent in here. Point of my post was, it's all about type of construction. Most new single family home construction doesn't usually take noise into consideration, if not at all. On the other side, alot is invested in exterior and interior acoustic control materials in almost any multi-unit urban construction or renovation.

Can You Say Anything You Want on the Net?
I think if I lived in a house or small apartment building I'd take it down, but I live in a highrise building, so posting address make sense for locating at least what block I live on in a city. As David mentioned (in an extreme type of example) friends of mine are always losing or breaking phones. And keep in mind they are Real Friends, the select view that have the privacy rights to actually see that info. I don't know why you'd hide that info from these people, unless you are that easy in adding people that are merely acquaintances. I suppose the other option is people keep their profiles available for the public to see? Well, now see that's weird.

Bonus New underground skywalks in the tri-level portions of Chicago's street system. Another avenue runs beneath this level.

Same here. And so close to the L stop, the heart of the neighborhood where you would expect better architecture. I'll be sure to snap another photo as they progress. Here's a shot where the the public art wall on the side was being changed. It's okay, but I think this one just off Cermak and Ashland is better

Warren High School Facade - quick tour
Trying not to come across as being rude, but everything you heard or wherever this info came from is pure made up fiction. As in: 1. What the original building is constructed of and the type of building systems employed and 2. What materials will outlast the other. I'd be willing to explain why.

If you had a free standing house in the suburbs with some space between you and your neighbors, it would probably be more tolerable. No way, lol. My parents live in a ranch home and you can still hear everything from the neighbors. They aren't even being loud, but those 2x10 walls can only block so much.

Shoot, I post my address. Then again there's no imaginable way someone could get into my place.

Indeed it's a mockery. I even think facadectomies are awful. But sending this to landfill is far from being a better alternative. Think of it this way. People will look at this, then at that po-mo school and go "What the hell were we thinking then"

Downtown Detroit in Danger of Demolition
Michigan Central Station isn't going anywhere. No matter what. Even if the City Council votes to demolish it, it would be more of a symbolic act to say "Well at least we tried." It's far from being a Lafayette Building type of situation
-
Warren High School Facade - quick tour
I'd take it. It's better than full demolition, but I would have allowed it so you could pass through. Green up that passageway way more between the parking, like an actual walking path with narrower parking alleys. It will look more like a monument that way then just "some thing we decided to keep around because it's beautiful."

Downtown Detroit in Danger of Demolition
1. Pre-renovation working being done, new roof installed, new security system 2. Lights are always on but yeah....I haven't seen much activity....then again I haven't been to Detroit in 3 months 3. Likely will be renovated soon 4. Likely will become abandoned (currently it's a recently restored active building) But the county is moving to the Guardian anyways... 5. It's interesting at most I guess. Not beautiful, just very identifiable. 6. Cultural history yes. The building is ugly though, but it still should be saved 7. No get rid of it Seriously they want to save it? 8. Now that's hilarious. Why don't they just build a brand new Packard plant somewhere else desirable? 9. Very much agreed. Such a beautiful building. 10. Ditto to that, but at leas try to keep it open unlike last time, and the last time, and the time before that, and the time before that. No I don't want to schedule an appointment to tour it. I just want to pay some admission and walk in whenever I want.

FYI, the family dollar photos are in the correct order. I took the first one winter 2008 and the second just the other day. They've been restoring the building since. More Pilsen:

A BUSiness Idea
I think that's how Megabus makes their money though....relying on the last minute decisions makers to cover the bulk of the cost. I've ridden Megabus a few times and have rarely been able to secure that $1 Chicago to Detroit deal. I guess the bigger question to ask you is what are the reasons you forsee students traveling between these cities?
