Well, that show Man Caves was filmed across the river in Hoboken, NJ
  3. The other side reveals mostly glass (or what USED to be glass I believe)

You wouldn't be an organ donor because of that? This accident is probably very rare. Just imagine all the good things that come out of organ donation.

I totally missed walking by the shooting on Main Street downtown on Monday because ColDayMan wanted to use the skywalks.
  6. You're not a female, clearly. I obviously can't speak for other people's reasons, but you are definitely not ignored by anyone when you're even a relatively attractive female, be it gangs, homeless, drunks, or other unsavory characters. Believe me, I WISH it were as easy as just walking with a purpose and ignoring people, but it's not. I was waiting for this post. I was going to say that my statement was more directed toward males, since attacks involving females involve different motives by the attacker or much different situations. All females should carry mace on them, yes. I ended up omitting this. It was getting late and I felt my post was getting more complicated than it should. It is likelier your attacker will run off, I agree statistics prove this. But the chance that it fails could mean much dire consequences. I rarely see articles where someone is randomly killed over mugging. Instead it was instigated by something (like a weapon you are carrying). I think of it like this. You are more likely to get in an accident at 40 mph than you are at 70. But you'll probably make it out okay of the 40 mph accident where the 70 mph accident could result in your death. The desire for speeding, like the desire to beef up your defenses could be fatal in the chance another weapon is pointed at you. It's hard to tell how many times the attacker has used that weapon, but are most people that prepared? If you are, then that is excellent. I'm not really debating eithics of carrying guns or kninves. If people want to carry one on them to feel safe, then that's great as long as they are responsible. I'm just saying that the chance the attacker does not stand down to your gun, but pulls out his own would be the worst. But this alone was not enough to justify me responding. I guess I'm just surprised that there are people who have so much trouble. It makes me wonder if that I am being careless about my own safety. I've just never seen the need, or else avoid these types of situations altogether by avoiding a particular street at a certain time of day or using some mode of transit to guarantee safe travel around certain areas.

Jeez, 20x optical? I remember when I got one with 11x a couple years ago and thought that was amazing. Like computers, cameras continue to improve at an exponential pace.
  8. I don't know why, but I feel a sudden sense of shock that maybe I'm missing something. I've walked/biked through some pretty nasty neighborhoods around Detroit and Philadelphia at all hours but don't feel threatend. I mean it's cool if you feel a weapon makes you more secure but I've never needed one. Is there something very different between downtown Cleveland and your home environment? I mean Cleveland's downtown would be towards the end of my list of places to be concerned about. I don't know, maybe it's just me. Even homeless don't approach me like they do other people. I don't want to say there are people who put themselves out as easy targets, but the level of exposure me or my friends have to what are considered unsafe places should have resulted in at least one incident by now. I guess the people I know who have carried weapons are defending themselves because of a particular reason. Maybe it's because they are carrying a lot of money, or driving a nice car, or they are dressed in a way that may cast themselves as carrying valuables. Even a few blocks from my apartment, 1 person is robbed at gunpoint maybe every other month. It's always the same story. Had the ipod up loud, wearing expensive clothing, or parking their pricey SUV at 2:15 a.m. But I feel if you are doing your thing, and walk with a purpose, you will avoid the people you wish to not encounter. Even if that fails, I just don't think a weapon will help you much, if not make the situation worse. It seems like a big risk to defend $60 in cash and some credit cards. At the very worst (and previously mentioned) you could be jumped and pummeled by a gang. But typically waving a gun or knife won't help you if they have the same. That's asking for even more trouble.
  9. You should see the people who design those jail-like suburban schools.....oh the stories I could tell. What a shame though. I wonder who salvaged/purchased the pediment.
  10. I guess that means more street furniture to slap ads all over.

I had a book that details the historical study of urban form, and why planning is important. I took this back in undergrad, and it's stored back at my parents home. I'll give them a ring tomorrow and see if they'll be willing to find it and give the name and author. It's a book that's pretty easy to find in any library. You should also read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Death_and_Life_of_Great_American_Cities You'll find a lot of great information for your paper by just skimming.
  12. It a city that is surrounded enitrely by Detroit. It's almost right in the center. Same with Hamtramck Highland Park is the pink trapezoid left of Hamtramck. All the orange is the city of Detroit. Ever since HP went into receivership by the state, the CoD provides police and fire, thus requring the abandonment of all HP municipal facilities. In other words, when one house catches fire, the whole block burns with it until another underfunded department comes to put it out.
  13. I did a paper for a class last year that included these buildings. I gathered historic photos of when these structures opened, and I took the pictures in 2008 in the exact same position, and by exact, I mean PERFECTLY lined up. I had to get on the roof of the old police station I think. When I exited, I was told by a police officer on patrol nearby, that the buildings are very dangerous and I should never go back inside. He was right though, I've heard some awful stories. It was bad enough I had to step over dead animals. Excellent photos though Zach, it's just such a shame to see these once proud structures in such a state of disrepair. Maybe someday they will get the attention they deserve.
  14. I've seen quite a few late art deco styled apartment buildings in some cities. My only guess why it didn't become all that popular was because of the depression and World War II. The late 40's and into 50's then brought different styles and typologies.
  15. Yeah, I really want to check it out. I called the city to confirm ownership and they told me about all the dogs and collapsing floors and what not. The old security guard that used to be there was really nice about letting people take pictures. What a shame, since these individuals were let go, all the windows were removed.

The front door to the vestibule doesn't lock, but it technically isn't supposed to be an issue since tens of millions have their mailboxes by the street or by their front door. There's not really much my landlord can do, and I don't expect him to do anything. The bronze mailbox unit probably can't be ripped out since I live in a historical landmark. There are locks on them, but mail is so different today that we can't lock them or it won't fit.
  17. I was thinking about this lately. But I wonder how many people would WANT to live in this type of development. My guess is many, but suburban home buyers are just not offered this type of housing when it comes to most parts of the United States. Not really sure. My parents live in a suburban neighborhood that's within walking distance to a relatively urban downtown. All their neighbors (and my parents) talk about is wanting to dump their homes for a postage stamp sized yard, a generous front porch, and modest square footage. Even a rowhome would suit. But they can't have that. It's just not being built. At least not yet in their community.

OK, I'm really angry. People in my building have been missing mail lately. There's been a flurry of notes posted on the downstairs door with messages like "have you seen my package, it was confirmed delivery, but not there!" One of my neighbors claimed she had her mail stolen, and some said there's had been opened and thrown on the floor. Now I was the recent target. I got a valentine from my parents earlier this month with a $20 gift certificate and it was stolen. I know it arrived because I saw it on my way out in my box, but I couldn't take it because I had nowhere to put the card. When I returned it was missing. I don't think it's someone in the building, rather someone off the street. I haven't seen any homeless sleeping in the vestibule, so I can't think of anyone in particular. It just ticks me off. I asked my parents not to resend the gift, even though they really wanted to. I think I'm going to discontinue my address and get a postal box since I don't live far. All my bills are already online.

I tell you Ohioans, people up here in Michigan just don't realize the awesomeness of your city. The architecture, geography, and urbanity are just incredible. It's definitely one of the most underrated cities out there. Can't wait to walk around the city tomorrow.
  20. I didn't realize people were still burning coal in their homes. Even into the 1980's? I thought maybe this practice was dead much earlier. My grandmother's house is almost a hundred years old and has the metal door which opens up right at the sidewalk. When I was young I used to climb down the old coal shoot all the time. I can't imagine the practicality of people attempting to use this as a source of energy in modern homes when there's such better (and cleaner) alternatives.

I like how that 7 story modernist is on a dirt road LOL. Tower in the Park! er...farm!
  23. Art Deco architecture was accompanied by expensive materials. I really want to say that some post modernism is an incredibly watered down version of it....you know the geometries and such.

Yeah, Flint has good hospitals. Genesis, HurLey, and McLaren are all good. I don't like Genesis' billboard on the freeway something like "If you exit now you are more likely to survive the heart attack you're having" Can't remember the exact words....but I'll keep that in mind when I'm 45, eating french fries, while driving. I'm sure all hospitals treat gunshots wounds well, but it's interesting to think that some hospitals do far more procedures than others. How many gunshot wounds does U of M hospital in Ann Arbor treat? I think my whole six years in Ann Arbor, there maybe was one shooting? What I do know was that it took them forever to re-attach the tip of my finger when I accidentally cut that off because the emergency room was overflowing. Ah... the days of cutting plexiglas in architecture school, watch the blade.

What would send up sparks from a body? Oh yeah the "gold grill" Yikes this is getting weird lol. So it was the back part of the truck bed. I knew the bracing had rusted out and I should have gotten it repaired earlier, but now it's fixed. I was actually in a shady area of Flint when it happened (late at night) Chavez at Longway, I can't remember.
