Hassled in Aronoff Center for Photography
^ Okay, maybe if the laws for photography are the same as trespassing....you aren't a trespasser until the owner declares you as one. So yes, you can walk into a private building and start shooting photos, and it's true that they may NOT confiscate your photos or camera. But they have all the rights to ask that you stop shooting or leave immediately. In the GM Renaissance Center in Detroit, they specifically ask that you not photograph the upper Rotunda because of all the exposed structural elements. The atrium, lower rotunda, lobby, and food court area are all open to photography, but here you see an example of where owners/security have the right to tell you what elements you may or may not photograph. Of course you can shoot through windows. Someone can take photos of my home if they are standing on the sidewalk. However, the moment they step on my lawn, I can come out and tell them to stop photographing on my lawn, and continue their activities back on the sidewalk.

If you were standing on private property....... You probably should have asked before hand. You don't have the right to walk into a privately owned building and take photographs, unless you know for fact the owner permits them. With the exception of banks, I've noticed most large office buildings in any downtown permit photography inside. Some don't require permission, and others want you to let a security officer know that you will be taking pictures. Asking can be very helpful. Sometimes security officers share your interest and may unlock doors to areas typically not accessible to the public. I've been granted roof access to places, just because I asked permission and was nice. There was a historic building in downtown Pittsburgh (don't remember the name) that I went into. The security guard said the owners didn't permit photography, but to make it up, he gave us a very extensive tour of the building, with lots of interesting facts. Very memorable. I enjoyed it far more than getting a crappy underexposed shot of the lobby. ................... - Laws and restrictions are different for abandoned structures, and can vary by state or city - ................... BTW, I just wanted to mention something somewhat relevant to this. But I hear from a lot of people who get bent out of shape when people are approached by security, cops, common citizens, whatever... asking them what they are photographing and why. The photographer seems to get somewhat defensive, and quick to unleash their rights, or simply scoff at the question. People have the right to ask, like we have the right to photograph. I'm actually happier people ask the question. I want them to know about my work. Now if they approach you right away while you stand on a city sidewalk and demand you stop shooting, that's a whole other issue. To be honest, I usually say "okay" and walk away. I know I have my rights, but I like to avoid confrontations. I'll just come back later.

NYC: around Morningside Heights
I stayed a summer in this neighborhood at the I-House, just across from Grant's Tomb. Great neighborhood.

I don't think so. I was looking for those when I was doing my planning project.

Roosevelt Warehouse, Detroit
What's more outrageous is all the recent school closures where they just leave the places sitting open. Confidential records strewn about. Kids social security numbers exposed to the public eye. Perfectly good computers just sitting in rooms exposed to the elements. It's all wrong, more wrong than the shady companies they hired and paid that were "supposed" to seal these buildings. It's such a mess.

Random Ann Arbor walk-about
Yeah, Huron and 4th Av's is literally the intersection of outcasts. I really don't want to say this in a mean way, but it's got a senior housing project, Hotel Embassay (it's really a hostel in better terms), the county courthouse where the soon to be incarcerated sit outside, and a converted gas station with undetermined retail.

Actually, I know a couple people who got very high paying jobs in Toledo recently. Making $105,000 at 23 must be nice.

Awesome Photos. Terrible building From a realistic standpoint, you are correct. Not to say Detroit won't come back someday with a healthy population of under 30,000. But for the people who imagine Detroit to be a New Chicago someday....Forget it.

Where do you live?
I'm just happy I have a hot radiator in the bathroom. It's always really hot in there which is perfect. Actually, the temperature is at extremes. There's a window in the shower. So when it's -15 out, the cold air seeps in and meets with the hot water. Slide an inch to the left, very cold, inch to the right, it's too hot.

I hate how people always ask me if I had class with Michael Phelps (he went to U of M). The hell I cared. At this university we have class with future NFL stars. I never saw what the big deal was. His weed smoking doesn't bother me all that much. It's not hurting anyone except himself. What bothers me is his drunk driving incident years ago. I have no respect for people who drink and drive. I view Michael Phelps like I view Michael Jackson. MJ is a greater singer, but a strange person. Michael Phelps is a great athlete, but also very irresponsible in his actions.

Where do you live?
$750 for a loft, 1 bath, 3 closets! :D I was really busy preparing for the gallery, and doing research, that I've neglected my place for quite a while. I really need to get out of this town. Ann Arbor is so overrated and overpriced. But it is a model city. I was looking at Chicago apartments the other day for when I graduate. I can get a newly renovated 1 bedroom loft-style apartment with roof pool and deck, exercise facility, on-site dry cleaner, utilities/cable/internet included, parking, all in the heart of downtown only for $1250/month!. It made me think, geez, so for just a few hundred more a month when I have an actual job, I can upgrade to an apartment that is actually good for a fair price.

Sherman, that looks awesome. How much is your rent for that place. I checked out their website and it says the rents are between $725-1400. I can't help but think I'm paying way to much for the dump I live in.

Calling all IT/Computer Science People
You might just be better off reformatting. You should consider downloading from more mainstream sites. Indeed they are more "noticeable" but read the comments and see if the software has been tested and safe.

Build models in architecture school. University of Michigan required it. They liked it when they saw students have "happy accidents." Of course we still CADed it up soon after. As far as big buildings, I have to agree that manufacturing of building components took precedence before the architect's hand went from pen to mouse. Actually, CAD isn't done by REAL architects, it's done by their slave laborers who lack registration and schooling to practice. So I guess you could say CAD is just a vehicle for transcribing ideas, not generating them. if there's someone to blame, it's the manufacturers and their wonderful product catalogs. The bigger the firm, the bigger the library of cheap products many of you hate.

Unusual Question. I'm planning to move soon, and I'm going to stick with my current cable provider (comcast). I have all the equipment, but I don't want to return any of it, but move it to my new location. The reason why is all the stuff they gave me is brand new and I haven't had a single problem since it went into service. I'm concerned that when I'm in my new location, I'll have to return what I have and pick up 'new' equipment that might be junk. I'm sure all cable providers have similar policies when people move and maintain accounts. That's why I'm wondering if anyone knows. Finding the answer to my question from comcast would require long waits with customer service, or I wouldn't know until the day I actually switch my service location. Comcast tv and internet has been extremely reliable, but their customer service needs an overhaul. I'd prefer to take all the equipment with me to my new apartment than go through a huge hassle.
